    Notes: We construct the Green function for an elastic medium with a plane source. This Green function is particularly helpful in the analysis of weakly nonlinear problems, such as occur in nondestructive acoustic evaluation of bonded structures. By using a perturbative approach we describe the amplitude distribution of the second harmonic of the driving frequency by linear equations with sources. In deriving the Green function we include both longitudinal and transverse polarizations and consider an arbitrary direction of the wave vector with respect to the layer normal. We show how this Green function can be combined with the transfer matrix approach to calculate the fields in layered structures. The examples of second harmonic generation from half space and a single layer are considered. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Self-assembled two-dimensional arrays of Ge islands on Si(111)7×7 were grown by depositing Ge on Si(111)7×7 substrates held at 650 K. It was observed that these islands were conical in shape as well as nearly uniform in size and shape. Consequently, the substrates of about 1 cm2 area were used as field-emitter arrays. It was found that the arrays exhibited a low onset voltage for field emission, large emission current, as well as high current stability. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Twenty-one samples of cider distillates have been analyzed for sensory characteristics, volatile and furanic compounds, and low-molecular mass polyphenols. Principal Component Analysis established relationships between sensory attributes and the cider distillates on the basis of the raw material used in their manufacture and aging level. Three sensory descriptors (smoothness, nutty, and toasty) were predicted with good accuracy using 7 aromas as predictor variables and a Partial Least Squares (PLS) model with 2 principal components.

    Notes: Growth of white axial muscle fibres of ten species of freshwater teleosts from five families (Cyprinidae, Centrarchidae, Percidae, Salmonidae, Esocidae) possessing widely different growth rates and ultimate sizes have been studied. The dynamics of muscle increase (i.e. increase in fibre numbers and/or diameter) appears to determine the ability for rapid somatic growth and large ultimate size in teleosts. Thus, the largest and fastest growing species (smallmouth bass, lake whitefish, rainbow trout, muskellunge) show evidence of sustained recruitment of muscle fibres to a large size, in contrast to the smaller and slower growing species (bluntnose minnow, longnose dace). Pumpkinseed, bluegill and yellow perch are all intermediate in fibre growth dynamics, growth and ultimate size between the smaller and larger species. Moreover, the ability of teleosts to grow rapidly and attain a large ultimate size is dependent on the body length at which recruitment of new muscle fibres into the growing axial muscle ceases. The regression equation, y=– 0.29 + 2.26 (x), showing the relationship (r = 0.95) between ultimate body length, x, and fork length at cessation of recruitment, y, indicated that for these teleosts, recruitment tends to cease when the fork length reaches about 44% of the ultimate body length. Possible mechanisms to account for this relationship are proposed, and the role of the ultimate fibre diameter in posing limits to the ultimate size of the species is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The RTX group of exotoxins represents a branch of a family of exoproteins produced by Gram-negative bacteria which share the properties of being secreted by a leader-independent pathway and a tandemly-repeated nine-amino-acid sequence that is responsible for calcium binding. The Escherichia coli hemolysin (HlyA) is the prototype for the RTX exotoxin family which includes the leukotoxins of Pasteurella haemolytica and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and hemolysins from four Gram-negative genera. A review of the genetics, synthesis, export and target cell reactivity of the E. coli hemolysin is given. An evolutionary tree of the RTX toxin family based on amino acid sequence similarity is presented.

    Notes: Summary Three hydantoins, namely, hydantoin, 5,5-dimethylhydantoin and 5-carboxymethylidine hydantoin are released on acid-hydrolysis of HCN oligomers. These hydantoins correspond to the major amino acids released on acid-hydrolysis of HCN oligomers. Carbamyl groups present in the HCN oligomers are probably the principal precursors of these hydantoins. 5-Carboxymethylidine hydantoin is formed by the acid-catalyzed cyclization of the dicarbamyl derivative of diaminosuccinic acid. The facile rearrangement of 5-carboxymethylidine hydantoin to orotic acid in base suggests the possibility of a direct route to pyrimidines from HCN.

    Notes: Abstract. We describe a coarse-grain parallel approach for the homogeneous solution of linear systems. Our solutions are symbolic, i.e., exact rather than numerical approximations. We have performed an outer loop parallelization that works well in conjunction with a black box abstraction for the coefficient matrix. Our implementation can be run on a network cluster of UNIX workstations as well as on an SP-2 multiprocessor. Task distribution and management are effected through MPI and other packages. Fault tolerance, checkpointing, and recovery are incorporated. Detailed timings are presented for experiments with systems that arise in RSA challenge integer factoring efforts. For example, we can solve a 252,222 × 252,222 system with about 11.04 million nonzero entries over the Galois field with two elements using four processors of an SP-2 multiprocessor, in about 26.5 hours CPU time.

    Notes: Abstract An enrichment culture which converted acetate to methane at 60°C was obtained from a thermophilic anaerobic bioreactor. The predominant morphotype in the enrichment was a sheathed gas-vacuolated rod with marked resemblence to the mesophile Methanothrix soehngenii. This organism was isolated using vancomycin treatments and serial dilutions and was named Methanothrix sp. strain CALS-1. Strain CALS-1 grew as filaments typically 2–5 cells long, and cultures showed opalescent turbidity rather than macroscopic clumps. The cells were enclosed in a striated subunit-type sheath and there were distinct cross-walls between the cells, similar to M. soehngenii. The gas vesicles in cells were typically 70 nm in diameter and up to 0.5 μm long, and were collapsed by pressures over 3 atm (ca. 300 kPa). Stationary-phase cells tended to have a higher vesicle content than did growing cells, and occasionally bands of cells were seen floating at the top of the liquid in stationary-phase cultures. Acetate was the only substrate of those tested which was used for methanogenesis by strain CALS-1, and acetate was decarboxylated by the aceticlastic reaction. The optimum temperature for growth of strain CALS-1 was near 60°C (doubling time=24–26 h), with no growth occurring at 70°C and 37°C. The optimum pH value for growth was near 6.5 in bicarbonate/CO2 buffered medium and no growth occurred at pH 5.5 or pH 8.4. No growth was obtained below pH 7 when the medium was buffered with 20 mM phosphate. Strain CALS-1 grew in a chemically defined medium and required biotin. Sulfide concentrations over 1 mM were inhibitory to the culture, and growth was more rapid with 1 mM 2-mercaptoethane sulfonate (coenzyme M) or 1 mM titanium citrate as an accessory reductant than with 1 mM cysteine. It is likely that strain CALS-1 represents a new species in the genus Methanothrix.
