    Abstract: This textbook contains the contents coming from hydraulics, hydrodynamics, chemical principles, chemical reaction engineering and bioengineering, which relates closely with fundamental principles in environmental engineering.     Description: Comprehensive management of karst water resources requires sufficient understanding of their dynamics and karst-specific modeling tools. However, the limited availability of observations of karstic groundwater dynamics has been prohibiting the assessment of karst water resources at regional to global scales. This paper presents the first global effort to integrate experimental approaches and large-scale modeling. Using a global soil-moisture monitoring program and a global database of karst spring discharges, the simulations of a preliminary global karstic-groundwater-recharge model are evaluated. It is shown that soil moisture is a crucial variable that better distinguishes recharge dynamics in different climates and for different land cover types. The newly developed dataset of karst spring discharges provides first insights into the wide variability of discharge volumes and recharge areas of different karst springs around the globe. Comparing the model simulations with the newly collected soil-moisture and spring-discharge observations, indicates that (1) improvements of the recharge model are still necessary to obtain a better representation of different land cover types and snow processes, and (2) there is a need to incorporate groundwater dynamics. Applying and strictly evaluating these improvements in the model will finally provide a tool to identify hot spots of current or future water scarcity in the karst regions around the globe, thus supporting national and international water governance.

    Description: River infiltration is an important part of groundwater recharge at riverbank filtration (RBF) sites. It is not only affected by the hydraulic gradient between the river stage and the groundwater table but also largely depends on the riverbed hydraulic conductivity (RHC). However, owing to the hydrodynamic conditions and sediment thickness during river scouring and deposition, the lithology of riverbed sediments undergoes strong spatial and temporal changes, which lead to a highly uncertain RHC. The influence of river scouring and deposition on RHC is not completely clear, resulting in calculation inaccuracies in the rate of river water infiltration to the aquifer and evaluation of the regional groundwater resource quantity. Based on the geological and hydrogeological settings at a typical RBF site in the middle reaches of the second Songhua River in China, we determined the relationship between RHC and sediment particle size using stepwise regression analysis and a genetic algorithm. We established a hydrodynamic and sediment transport model based on Delft3D to simulate the spatial distributions of sediment particle sizes. On this basis, a numerical groundwater flow model was established using Visual MODFLOW, in which the river boundary was generalized into a third type of boundary condition, and RHC zoning was performed to improve the accuracy of the simulation. We conclude that accurate prediction of RHC is essential for the assessment of groundwater resources in riparian zones. The exploitation of groundwater should fully consider the river infiltration and avoid a series of ecological and environmental problems caused by excessive groundwater exploitation. The dataset is the basic data of the above research.

    Description: At first glance, medicine and poison might seem to be opposites. But in China’s formative era of pharmacy (200–800 CE), poisons were strategically deployed as healing agents to cure everything from chills to pains to epidemics. Healing with Poisons explores the ways physicians, religious devotees, court officials, and laypeople used powerful substances to both treat intractable illnesses and enhance life. It illustrates how the Chinese concept of du—a word carrying a core meaning of “potency”—led practitioners to devise a variety of techniques to transform dangerous poisons into efficacious medicines. Recounting scandals and controversies involving poisons from the Era of Division to the early Tang period, Yan Liu considers how the concept of du was central to the ways people of medieval China perceived both their bodies and the body politic. Liu also examines a wide range of du-possessing minerals, plants, and animal products in classical Chinese pharmacy, including the highly poisonous herb aconite and the popular arsenic drug Five-Stone Powder. By recovering alternative modes of understanding wellness and the body’s interaction with potent medicines, this study cautions against arbitrary classifications and exemplifies the importance of paying attention to the technical, political, and cultural conditions in which substances become truly meaningful.     Notes: An automatic measuring system used to measure the microregion magnetic field distribution by means of a SEM has been built. The physical principle is to use the interaction of Lorentz force between electron beam and sample magnetic fields to test the magnetic field. A precisely focused electron beam resulting from a SEM with 5000–20 000-V accelerating voltage is used as the magnetic field detector. The image collection system is formed of PCP (photocon plate), camera, and a high-speed image processing interface. By using a scanning control interface, the selected-area, adjustable step-length electron beam scanning can be completed. The spatial resolution of this measuring system is better than 0.1 μm. The magnetic field sensitivity for measuring VHS mode video magnetic head is about 20 Oe. Using a soft magnetic ring with a little gap, we calibrate the measuring system and the error is 〈10%. The lower cost of this system makes it very practical.

    Notes: Various suspensions containing Al2O3 nanoparticles with specific surface areas in a range of 5–124 m2 g−1 have been prepared and their thermal conductivities have been investigated using a transient hot-wire method. Nanoparticle suspensions, containing a small amount of Al2O3, have substantially higher thermal conductivity than the base fluid, with the enhancement increasing with the volume fraction of Al2O3. The enhanced thermal conductivity increases with an increase in the difference between the pH value of aqueous suspension and the isoelectric point of Al2O3 particle. For the suspensions using the same base fluid, the thermal conductivity enhancements are highly dependent on specific surface area (SSA) of nanoparticle, with an optimal SSA for the highest thermal conductivity. For the suspensions containing the same nanoparticles, the enhanced thermal conductivity ratio is reduced with the increasing thermal conductivity of the base fluid. The crystalline phase of the nanoparticles appears to have no obvious effect on the thermal conductivity of the suspensions. Comparison between the experiments and the theoretical model shows that the measured thermal conductivity is much higher than the values calculated using theoretical correlation, indicating new heat transport mechanisms included in nanoparticle suspensions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
