    Notes: Magnetization-vector measurements at 77 K on a field-cooled sample rotated by angle θ relative to fixed field H reveal that MP, the penetrating vortex-flux component of the magnetization, undergoes some extraordinary changes at H≈30 Oe. As θ is raised above 180°, MP decreases in size to a very small minimum while its direction shifts rapidly, and these changes repeat as θ is then lowered below 180°. This behavior, which evolves systematically with H, was observed earlier for the same sample at 4.2 K but at much higher H (∼800 Oe) and is readily ascribed to a broad distribution in strength of the vortex pinning forces. Due to this distribution, the vortex lines bifurcate into two groups, one of which rotates rigidly with the sample while the other is held by H and turns frictionally relative to the sample.

    Notes: A polycrystalline superconducting thin-disk sample was rotated in a fixed field (H) at 4.2 K, and the vector magnitude and orientation of the total magnetization (M) were measured as the sample-rotation angle (θ) was slowly cycled between 0° and 360°. The measured M was decomposed into a penetrating (vortex) flux component Mp that rotates rigidly with the sample at very small θ and a diamagnetic (shielding) component Md that stays antiparallel to H. As θ is raised, Mp deviates from rigid rotation, and the deviations are very different for the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) states at the same H, indicating different distributions in the strengths of the initial pinning forces. However, Md is exactly the same for both states and closely equals χ0H, where χ0 is the low-H (ZFC) diamagnetic susceptibility. At still higher θ, Mp rotates up to some critical angle relative to H, where it remains as the sample continues to turn. This frictional motion of Mp relative to the sample presumably derives from a sequential hopping of vortices between pinning centers.

    Notes: A differential method for analyzing first-order kinetic data is presented. While the essence of this approach has been known for almost a century, the use of computers to collect, store, and manipulate data has reenergized this innovative idea. Based on the equation ln |dA1/dt| = ln |k(Ao - A(infinity))| - kt, plots of ln |dAt/dt| vs. t were found to be lienar for both simulated kinetic data and data collected for the reaction of [(en)2Co(SCH2CH2NH2)]2+ with acrylamide. The rate constants for the reaction obtained by this method are identical to those obtained by the infinite-time method of analysis but do not require infinite-time measurements in their evaluation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Description: Early transient developmental exposure to an endocrine active compound, diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, causes late-stage effects in the reproductive tract of adult mice. Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) plays a role in mediating these developmental effects. However, the developmental mechanism is not well known in male tissues. Here, we present genome-wide transcriptome and DNA methylation profiling of the seminal vesicles (SVs) during normal development and after DES exposure. ERα mediates aberrations of the mRNA transcriptome in SVs of adult mice following neonatal DES exposure. This developmental exposure impacts differential diseases between male (SVs) and female (uterus) tissues when mice reach adulthood due to most DES-altered genes that appear to be tissue specific during mouse development. Certain estrogen-responsive gene changes in SVs are cell-type specific. DNA methylation dynamically changes during development in the SVs of wild-type (WT) and ERα-knockout (αERKO) mice, which increases both the loss and gain of differentially methylated regions (DMRs). There are more gains of DMRs in αERKO compared with WT. Interestingly, the methylation changes between the two genotypes are in different genomic loci. Additionally, the expression levels of a subset of DES-altered genes are associated with their DNA methylation status following developmental DES exposure. Taken together, these findings provide an important basis for understanding the molecular and cellular mechanism of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as DES, during development in the male mouse tissues. This unique evidence contributes to our understanding of developmental actions of EDCs in human health.

    Description: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumour associated with a high mortality rate and poor prognosis worldwide. Uridine diphosphate-glucose pyrophosphorylase 2 (UGP2), a key enzyme in glycogen biosynthesis, has been reported to be associated with the occurrence and development of various cancer types. However, its diagnostic value and prognostic value in HCC remain unclear. The present study observed that UGP2 expression was significantly downregulated at both the mRNA and protein levels in HCC tissues. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that UGP2 may be an indicator for the diagnosis of HCC. In addition, Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression multivariate analyses indicated that UGP2 is an independent prognostic factor of overall survival (OS) in patients with HCC. Furthermore, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) suggested that gene sets negatively correlated with the survival of HCC patients were enriched in the group with low UGP2 expression levels. More importantly, a significant correlation was identified between low UGP2 expression and fatty acid metabolism. In summary, the present study demonstrates that UGP2 may contribute to the progression of HCC, indicating a potential therapeutic target for HCC patients.

    Description: Exponential industrialization and rapid urbanization have resulted in contamination of soil by metals from anthropogenic sources in Dongguan, China. The aims of this research were to determine the concentration and distribution of various metals (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn)) in soils and identify their potential health risks for local residents. A total of 106 soil samples were collected from the vicinity of industrial sites in Dongguan. Two types of samples were collected from each site: topsoil (0–20 cm, TS) and shallow soil (20–50 cm, SS). Results showed that the soils were contaminated by metals and pollution was mainly focused on TS. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and pollution indexes (PI) implied that there was a slight increase in the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Pb, but the metal pollution caused by industrial activities was less severe, and elements of As and Cr exhibited non-pollution level. The risk assessment results suggested that there was a potential health risk associated with As and Cr exposure for residents because the carcinogenic risks of As and Cr via corresponding exposure pathways exceeded the safety limit of 10−6 (the acceptable level of carcinogenic risk for humans). Furthermore, oral ingestion and inhalation of soil particles are the main exposure pathways for As and Cr to enter the human body. This study may provide basic information of metal pollution control and human health protection in the vicinity of industrial regions.

    Description: Wireless signal strength is susceptible to the phenomena of interference, jumping, and instability, which often appear in the positioning results based on Wi-Fi field strength fingerprint database technology for indoor positioning. Therefore, a Wi-Fi and PDR (pedestrian dead reckoning) real-time fusion scheme is proposed in this paper to perform fusing calculation by adaptively determining the dynamic noise of a filtering system according to pedestrian movement (straight or turning), which can effectively restrain the jumping or accumulation phenomena of wireless positioning and the PDR error accumulation problem. Wi-Fi fingerprint matching typically requires a quite high computational burden: To reduce the computational complexity of this step, the affinity propagation clustering algorithm is adopted to cluster the fingerprint database and integrate the information of the position domain and signal domain of respective points. An experiment performed in a fourth-floor corridor at the School of Environment and Spatial Informatics, China University of Mining and Technology, shows that the traverse points of the clustered positioning system decrease by 65%–80%, which greatly improves the time efficiency. In terms of positioning accuracy, the average error is 4.09 m through the Wi-Fi positioning method. However, the positioning error can be reduced to 2.32 m after integration of the PDR algorithm with the adaptive noise extended Kalman filter (EKF).

Multi-antenna pattern and single-antenna pattern have been proposed regarding how to receive and process reflected signals. Great efforts have been made concerning ground-based and air-borne observations. Meanwhile, a number of satellite-based missions have also been implemented. For the in-depth study of soil moisture remote sensing by the technique of GNSS-R, regardless of the extraction methods of the reflected signals or the types of the observation platform, three key issues have to be determined: The specular reflection point, the spatial resolution and the detection depth in the soil. However, in current literatures, there are no comprehensive explanations of the above three key issues. This paper conducts theoretical analysis and formula derivation, aiming to systematically and quantitatively determine the extent of soil moisture being detected in three dimensions from the above-mentioned aspects. To further explain how the three factors behave in the specific application, the results of two application scenarios are shown: (1) a ground-based GPS measurement in Marshall, Colorado, US from the Plate Boundary Observatory, corresponding to single-antenna pattern. The relative location of the specular reflection points, the average area of the First Fresnel Ellipse Clusters and the sensing depth of the time-series soil moisture are analyzed, and (2) an aviation experiment conducted in Zhengzhou to retrieve soil moisture content, corresponding to the multi-antenna pattern. The spatial distribution of soil moisture estimation with a certain resolution based on the flight tracks and the relevant sensing depth are manifested. For remote sensing using GNSS reflected signals, BeiDou is different from GPS mainly in the carrier frequency. Therefore, the results of this study can provide references for China’s future development of the BeiDou-R technique.
