Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the propagation of discontinuities in a perfectly conducting magnetohydrodynamic fluid, the model having been proposed by P. H. Roberts [1] in the context of neutron stars. P. H. Roberts [1] obtained a stability criterion which was subsequently reproduced by B. Straughan [3] using a discontinuity analysis but in the process the resulting sixth order secular equation decomposed into a product of quadratic and quartic polynomial factors. The first section of this paper investigates the reason for this factorization and the latter sections examine the nature of the equations governing the behaviour of the discontinuity amplitudes. The presence of the magnetic field effectively makes the fluid non-isotropic and so the determination of amplitude equations is non standard although they finally prove to be of Bernoulli type.

Notes: Abstract Constitutive equations are developed for a theory of viscous interface where the interface itself is a two-dimensional continuum. An analysis of the problem of stability for a fluid in an inverted tube of arbitrary shape, the fluid remaining in the tube due to surface tension forces, is also considered.

Notes: Abstract The evolutionary behaviour of acceleration waves of arbitrary shape in a perfect fluid is investigated. The theory employed allows two coupled mechanical and temperature acceleration waves to propagate with finite wavespeeds. New results are described for waves entering isothermal regions but where the exterior flow velocity is non-zero.

Notes: Abstract The propagation of acceleration-temperature waves in a rigid heat conductor is investigated. The theory employed allows temperature to travel with a finite wavespeed, and the full nonlinear theory is analysed. It is shown that various types of behaviour are possible for the amplitude of the wave, including one for which the amplitude becomes infinite in a finite time. Higher order temperature waves are also briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of acceleration waves in the nonlinear theory of thermoelasticity of Green and Lindsay [1] is investigated systematically. It is shown that two coupled waves may propagate with different finite wavespeeds. For waves entering isothermal homogeneously strained regions, explicit results are obtained for the wavespeeds and wave amplitudes, and the possibility of shock-wave formation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract This work applies the theory of small deformations superposed on an exact finite solution (see Green/Zerna [2], Graham [7]) to discuss the plane strain deformation of a plate of incompressible Mooney-Rivlin material containing an almost circular hole and which is expanded by a radial pressure at this hole and uniaxial tension at infinity. As a specific example, we consider the theory as it applies to an elliptic hole of small eccentricity. The resulting differential equations are solved using Colsys [12, 13], a recent numerical technique for handling boundary value problems for families of ordinary differential equations, and graphs of hoop stress are drawn against finite extension for various values of eccentricity and uniaxial tension.

Notes: Abstract This work explores an integral equation formulation of a generalised bowing problem incorporating air resistance and bow width. The Keller/Friedlander results are obtained as a special case. Some illustrative results are presented for a lightly damped string bowed at a point. The related integral equations are solved using Filon's method, a clever but relatively unknown algorithm for the numerical evaluation of integrals with rapidly oscillating trignometric kernels.

Notes: Abstract Applications of the theory of energy stability to problems in nonlinear convection are presented. Many topics are reviewed and examples of thermal, thermohaline and bio-convection are included. Specific sections address generalised energy methods, convection in a half-space, electrodynamic convection, surface tension driven convection, time-dependent flows such as gravity modulated convection and other topics.

Notes: Abstract This work investigates the second order deformation of a uniformly thick compressible isotropic elastic sheet with an axial cylindrical hole. The sheet is clamped at infinity and is subjected to a constant angular deformation on the interior boundary of the hole. The mathematical solution is formulated in terms of Weber-Orr transforms which are then numerically inverted.

Notes: Abstract This work examines the convective instability of a horizontal layer of magnetohydrodynamic fluid of variable permeability when subjected to a non-vertical magnetic field. We use a model proposed by P. H. Roberts [9] in the context of neutron stars but the results obtained are aso relevant to the area of ferromagnetic fluids. The presence of the variable permeability has no effect on the development of instabilities through the mechanism of stationary convection but influences the threshold of overstable convection which is often the preferred mechanism in non-terrestrial applications. In the context of ferromagnetic fluids, both stationary and overstable instability can be expected to be realisable possibilities.
