Notes: Abstract The orientation behavior of two series of segmented polyether polyurethanes containing different hard segment length distributions has been studied as a function of the average hard segment length which was varied from one to five methylene bis (p-phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) units. The orientation behavior of the soft segments, isolated hard segments, and of hard segments aggregated in hard domains was determined from the dichroic behavior of representative infrared bands. As the hard segment length increases, a transition in orientation behavior is observed which corresponds to a change in sample morphology. The effects of annealing and hard segment length distribution were also studied and were shown to affect the orientation response through their influence on sample morphology. Orientation hysteresis studies were performed to probe the mechanism of the transverse orientation and orientation inversion which occurred in polyurethanes with the longer, more crystallizable hard segment lengths.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Kristallstruktur eines Skapolithes (52% Me) mit starken Überstrukturreflexen (h+k+l=ungerade) wurde in der RaumgruppeP 42/m bestimmt.
Notes: Summary The crystal structure of a scapolite (52% Me) with strong superlattice (h+k+l=odd) reflections has been determined in the space groupP 42/n. The three-dimensional intensity data were collected with a normal beam single-crystal diffractometer using Zr-filtered Mo radiation. The result of the present structural investigation, together with two reported previously (Lin andBurley, 1973 a, b) confirms the theoretical conclusions (Lin andBurley, 1973 c). Two quantitative relationships in scapolite have also been established, (1) the exponential relationship between the intensity ratio (r) ΣI h+k+l=odd/ΣI h+k+l=even and the atomic displacement of atoms from the mirror plane consistent with the space groupI 4/m; (2) the linear relationship betweenr and the difference in the Al occupancy between T (2) and T (3) sites. The horizontal disposition of the positionally disordered CO3 groups in this scapolite is the same as in other scapolites, but the vertical disposition is different; the planar CO3 groups are tilted from the horizontal (001) plane.

Notes: Summary X-ray diffraction studies reveal that most scapolites belong to space groupP4 2 /n. The mean intensity of weak reflections violating body-centered symmetry, reaches a maximum around 37 per cent meionite and extrapolates to zero at the pure end-members. All intermediate scapolites of the marialitemeionite series are pseudobody-centered, and as the composition approaches that of the end-members the structure becomes truly body-centered (I4/m). The weakh+k+l odd reflections are directly related to (1) orderdisorder of Al and Si in the tetrahedral framework and (2) structural distortion from body-centered symmetry. Scapolites may be regarded as a continuous, homogeneous solid solution. The cell dimensions are only approximately linearly related to composition and there is a maximum deviation from linearity, for those scapolites (25% Me ≈ 45% Me) whose symmetry departs the most from body-centered symmetry. These phenomena are interpreted in terms of the structural characteristic of the scapolites.

Notes: Summary The purpose of the current study is to better understand the cold-rolling process through a micromechanical study. The dominant deformation mechanism is assumed to be the crystallographic slips in crystals. Specifically, the texture development in the metal sheet due to cold-rolling is simulated with a Taylor-type model, and the resultant yield loci are determined by employing Harren's self-consistent formulation to the situation in which the loading directions are not coaxial with the symmetric axes of the metal sheet. The calculations are evaluated with experimental data. Results show that these micromechanical models are quite successful in predicting the plastic behavior of metal sheets subject to moderate cold-rolling.

Notes: Several families of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates were synthesized, and the effects of reactive diluent type and content on their physical properties were investigated. Increasing reactive diluent content promoted the development of a second, high glass transition temperature phase in all the materials, thereby leading to increased strength and modulus. Changes in the extensibility of the samples upon addition of reactive diluent were inversely related to the effect of the diluent on the crosslink density. The effects of using different reactive diluents (di-, tri-, and tetraethylene glycol diacrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone) on the physical properties of the samples were attributed to differences in the softening point (Tg) of the homopolymer reactive diluents and the relative compatibility of the reactive diluents with the urethane acrylate segments.
