    Notes: Expression of the Escherichia coli serA gene is activated in vivo by the product of the lrp gene, leucine-responsive regulatory protein (Lrp), an effect partially reversed by L-leucine. We show here that serA is transcribed from two promoters, P1 45 bp upstream of the translation start site, and P2 92 bp further upstream. Lrp binds to a long AT-rich sequence from –158 to –82 from the start of the coding region, i.e. upstream of P1 and overlapping P2. It activates transcription from P1 and represses expression from P2. A second regulator, cAMP/CRP, activates P2, an effect that is largely inhibited by Lrp, such that catabolite repressor protein (Crp) and Lrp are rival activators of serA transcription.

    Notes: Abstract. Light/dark (L/D) and temperature are two major factors in the entrainment of circadian rhythms. The input pathways of these two environmental factors for the entrainment of circadian rhythms in Synechococcus RF-1 are different since the overt rhythms in mutant CR-1, one of the circadian-rhythm mutants of Synechococcus RF-1, could be established by temperature cycles but not by L/D. Therefore, it was of interest to investigate the phases of Synechococcus RF-1 cells entrained simultaneously by L/D and temperature. The circadian rhythms of nitrogenase activity and protein synthesis in RF-1 cells entrained by L/D, and by lowered or raised temperatures differed in their peaks of activity. Comparison of the phases of RF-1 cells entrained by L/D and temperature independently, and by L/D and temperature simultaneously indicated that L/D entrainment has priority over the temperature effect.

    Notes: Abstract Aging is associated with a decline in immune function. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin-4 (IL-4), two important immune deviation-related cytokines, are mainly produced by type 1 and type 2 T cells, respectively. To investigate the age-associated changes in the secretion of these two cytokines, 20 elderly and 20 young subjects fulfilling the SENIEUR protocol were enrolled. The ratios of CD4+ to CD8+ T cells were not different between the two age groups. The CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were purified by a magnetic cell sorting system, and then activated by concurrent anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 stimulation. The released cytokines were determined by ELISA. Both the CD4+ and the CD8+ T cells of the elderly individuals secreted a significantly larger amount of IFN-γ after activation. Profound IL-4 production by CD8+ T cells was observed in the older subjects compared with that of the young subjects. These data suggested that age-associated decrease in immunity may be related to an imbalance in the secretion of immune deviation cytokines. The number of IL-4-secreting CD8+ T cells (T cytotoxic 2) rose significantly in the older individuals. Our design also provided a useful way to differentiate the T cell subsets secreting the same cytokine, such as IFN-γ-producing T helper 1 and T cytotoxic 1 cells.

    Notes: Abstract. The surfactant film methodology is used to examine the electrochemistry of manganese-substituted myoglobin. Cyclic voltammograms at different scan rates depict a dynamic exchange between two redox couples, E 1 (–0.25 V vs. SCE) and E 2 (–0.41 V). Similar behavior is seen for Mn-substituted cytochrome c peroxidase, but the free cofactor, Mn(protoporphyrin IX) yields a single couple (–0.32 V) under the same conditions. A square scheme is proposed which describes equilibration between two different redox pathways associated with different forms of the protein. Overlapping oxidative currents from these two couples can be deconvoluted, and a pseudo first-order rate constant of 2.3 s–1 is obtained for the reaction following reduction of MnIIIMb. Experiments have been performed to probe possible mechanisms for this equilibrium, such as ligand dissociation or reversible adsorption at the electrode surface. A cofactor-induced reorganization of the protein structure is suggested as the basis of the behavior.

    Notes: Bismaleimide-triazine (BT) resins are thermosets derived from the addition polymerization of different molar ratios of 4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane (BM) and bisphenol A dicyanate (BA). The possible cross-linking reactions involved in the formation of BT resins are addition polymerization of BM, cyclocrimerization of BA, and heteropolymerization between BM and BA. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that cyclotrimerization of BA occurs during the cure of a 1 : 2 molar ratio of BM to BA (as 1M2A). No sign of cyclotrimerization is observed for the case of the 1 : 1 molar ratio of BM to BA (as 1M1A). A dynamic differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) is employed to study the cure kinetics. The apparent activation energy evaluated from the Prime method is increased with the content of the BM component in the starting mixture. The different pattern of activation energy with fractional conversion (α) indicates the different chemical nature for the cure reactions of 1M1A and 1M2A. The empirical rate functions thus evaluated are 2.32 × 105 + 5.62 α 105α - 8.61 × 105α2 and 6.07 × 105 + 1.06 × 106α - 1.66 × 106α2s-1 for the cure reactions of 1M1A and 1M2A, respectively. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The effects of catalyst acidity and the restricted reaction volume afforded by the HZSM-5 zeolite structure on the volatile cracking products derived from poly(ethylene) are investigated. The effectiveness of silica-alumina, HZSM-5, and sulfated zirconia acid catalysts for poly(ethylene) cracking are compared. When high catalyst to polymer ratios are employed and volatile products are rapidly removed during cracking, the most abundant volatile products generated by poly(ethylene) cracking are propene and isoalkenes. The relative amount of propene produced and the temperatures corresponding to the maximum rate of volatile hydrocarbon production are found to be related to catalyst acidity. The restricted volume inside HZSM-5 channels facilitates oligomerization and the production of small alkyl aromatics. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: This paper presents a high-precision capacitive angular position sensor (CAPS). The CAPS is designed to be excited by a single voltage to eliminate the matching errors of multi-excitations, and it is mainly composed of excitation electrodes, coupling electrodes, petal-form sensitive electrodes and a set of collection electrodes. A sinusoidal voltage is applied on the excitation electrodes, then the voltage couples to the coupling electrodes and sensitive electrodes without contact. The sensitive electrodes together with the set of collection electrodes encode the angular position to amplitude-modulated signals, and in order to increase the scale factor, the sensitive electrodes are patterned in the shape of petal-form sinusoidal circles. By utilizing a resolver demodulation method, the amplitude-modulated signals are digitally decoded to get the angular position. A prototype of the CAPS is fabricated and tested. The measurement results show that the accuracy of the sensor is 0.0036°, the resolution is 0.0009° and the nonlinearity over the full range is 0.008° (after compensation), indicating that the CAPS has great potential to be applied in high-precision applications with a low cost.
