    Notes: Abstract A sintering model, taking into account the effect of particle size distribution and the effect of grain growth, was developed previously. Experimental data from the sintering of high-purity alumina were used to testify this model. The sintering was carried out at 1500 °C in air for various lengths of time. The results agreed with the prediction of the model. The powders with a narrower starting particle size distribution exhibited a lower sintering rate prior to the occurrence of grain growth, but a higher densification rate after the grain growth took place. The grain size/density trajectory was applied to reveal the effect of particle size distribution on sintering behaviour. It is suggested that powders with a narrower size distribution are preferable.

    Notes: Abstract The interface of Al-C fibre composite was modified by coating a silver layer on the surface of carbon fibres prior to making composites, in an attempt to improve the wettability between molten aluminium and carbon fibres during infiltration. An electroless plating technique was adopted and perfected to provide a homogeneous silver coating on the carbon fibre surface. Al-C fibre composites were prepared using a liquid infiltration technique in a vacuum. It was found that silver coating promoted the wetting between aluminium and carbon fibres, particularly with polyacrylonitrile-base carbon fibres. However, due to rapid dissolution of silver in molten aluminium, it was believed that the improved infiltration was not due to the wetting behaviour between molten aluminium and silver. The cleaning of the fibre surface and the preservation of the cleaned carbon surface with silver coating was considered to be the prime reason for the improved wettability. Interfacial reactions between aluminium and carbon fibres were observed. Amorphous carbon was found to react more with aluminium than graphitic carbon. This is believed to be because of the inertness of the graphitic basal planes.

    Notes: Abstract Electroless silver coating on carbon fibres using silver nitrate solutions has been studied. It was observed that the rate of silver coating depends on the degree of graphitization of carbon fibres. Fibres with a higher degree of graphitization were coated faster than those with a lower degree of graphitization. A physical model considering the number of nucleation sites on the carbon fibre surface as a function of the degree of graphitization is proposed for the silver coating process. The strength and modulus of coated and uncoated fibres have been determined using a high-sensitivity load cell with an Instron tensile testing machine. It was observed that silver coating did not alter the strength or modulus of the fibre. Aluminium matrix composites have been successfully fabricated with these fibres. The same coating technique was also used to coat silicon carbide fibres. Improvement in the infiltration during composite fabrication was observed when the fibres were silver-coated.

    Notes: Abstract Liquid infiltration processes are seldom used in the fabrication of titanium matrix composites primarily because of severe interfacial reactions during processing. To minimize fibre-matrix interfacial reactions, a rapid infrared manufacturing (RIM) process has been developed. In this study, SCS-6 fibre reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated by the RIM process. Experimental results indicate that composites prepared by the RIM process exhibit small interfacial reaction zones and superior mechanical properties compared to diffusion bonded composites. Interfacial reactions during processing in this composite system have been investigated. Microscopic analyses showed that the carbon-rich coating present on SCS-6 fibres partially dissolved in the alloy during infiltration without forming a continuous reaction product. A physical model has been proposed to explain the dissolution mechanism of the carbon-rich coating. The dissolution rate of the coating at the processing temperature of 1300 °C was calculated to be 1.4×10−6 cm s−1.

The model predicts a dependence of densification on the width of the particle-size distribution. This dependence is strongly affected by the occurrence of grain growth. Prior to the occurrence of grain growth, the model predicts that the densification rate increases and then decreases as the particle-size distribution width of the original powder increases. After grain growth occurs, the densification rate decreases as the particle-size distribution width of the starting powder increases.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental evaluation was conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center to compare and contrast the performance of a newly developed resistance strain gage, the PdCr temperature-compensated wire strain gage, to that of a conventional high-temperature extensometry. The evaluation of the two strain measurement systems was conducted through the application of various thermal and mechanical loading spectra using a high-temperature thermomechanical uniaxial testing system equipped with quartz lamp heating. The purpose of the testing was not only to compare and contrast the two strain sensors but also to investigate the applicability of the PdCr strain gage to the testing environment typically employed when characterizing the high-temperature mechanical behavior of structural materials. Strain measurement capabilities to 800°C were investigated with a nickel base superalloy IN100 substrate material, and application to titanium matrix composite (TMC) materials was examined with the SCS-6/Ti-15-3 [0]8 system. PdCr strain gages installed by three attachment techniques—namely, flame spraying, spot welding and rapid infrared joining—were investigated.
