    Notes: The interrelationships among organoleptic, rheological, and chemical properties of canned peaches were studied. The rheological properties were determined by relaxation and Boussinesq die loading methods with the assumption that the Hertz theory was valid under experimental conditions. The results indicated that these methods could be used to monitor the textural properties of canned peaches. Chemical analysis showed that the total titratable acidity was significantly correlated to the hardness and graininess, while alcohol insoluble solids had a significant correlation with graininess. Acid detergent fibers showed a negative correlation with the mouthfeel.

    Description: Injecting Lower Hybrid Range of Frequency (LHRF) waves into Alcator C-Mod's high-density H-mode plasmas has led to enhanced global energy confinement by increasing pedestal temperature and pressure gradients, decreasing the separatrix density, modifying the pedestal radial electric field and rotation, and decreasing edge turbulence. These experiments indicate that edge LHRF can be used as an actuator to increase energy confinement via modification of boundary quantities. H 98 -factor increases of up to ∼35% (e.g., H 98 from 0.75 to 1.0) are seen when moderate amounts of LH power (P LH /P tot  ∼ 0.15) are applied to H-modes of densities n ¯ e   ∼ 3 × 10 20 m −3 , corresponding to values ∼0.5 of the Greenwald density. However, the magnitude of the improvement is reduced if the confinement quality of the target H-mode plasma is already good (i.e., H 98 target ∼ 1). Ray-tracing modeling and accessibility calculations for the LH waves indicate that they do not penetrate to the core. The LHRF power appears to be deposited in plasma boundary region, with a large fraction of the injected power increment appearing promptly on the outer divertor target. There is no evidence that the LH waves are driving current in these plasmas. The LHRF-actuated improvements are well correlated with suppressed pedestal density fluctuations in the 100–300 kHz range. There is also a correlation between the improved confinement and a drop in separatrix density, a correlation that is consistent with previous H-mode results with no LHRF.

    Description: This study presents the O I 135.6 nm airglow observation of the middle-latitude electron density enhancement during local summer nighttime by Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) on board the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) spacecraft. The nighttime density enhancement at magnetic middle latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, known as the Weddell Sea Anomaly (WSA), had been studied by using multipoint observations, and a similar anomalous nighttime enhancement was also found in the Northern Hemisphere recently. The resemblance of both anomalies at magnetic middle latitudes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres suggests that they should be categorized as the midlatitude summer nighttime anomaly (MSNA). To further explore the three-dimensional structure of the MSNA and its day-to-day variation, the two-dimensional global radiance maps and the vertical electron density profiles derived from disk and limb scans of the TIMED/GUVI 135.6 nm airglow observations are utilized in this study. These global observations show that the northern MSNA mainly occurs in Asia, Europe, and the North Atlantic Ocean regions, while the southern MSNA occurs in the South America-Antarctica region, near the WSA region. The GUVI day-to-day observations in 2006 further illustrate that the southern MSNA appears nightly in January-February and November-December, while the northern MSNA appears in 36 out of 41 total observation nights in May-June.

    Description: The active control of rotordynamic vibrations and stability by magnetic bearings and electromagnetic shakers was discussed extensively in the literature. These devices, though effective, are usually large in volume and add significant weight to the stator. The use of piezoelectric pushers may provide similar degrees of effectiveness in light, compact packages. Analyses are contained which extend quadratic regulator, pole placement and derivative feedback control methods to the prescribed displacement character of piezoelectric pushers. The structural stiffness of the pusher is also included in the theory. Tests are currently being conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center with piezoelectric pusher-based active vibration control. Results performed on the NASA test rig as preliminary verification of the related theory are presented.

    Description: Although considerable effort has been put into the study of steady state vibration control, there are few methods applicable to transient vibration control of rotorbearing systems. In this paper optimal control theory has been adopted to minimize rotor vibration due to sudden imbalance, e.g., blade loss. The system gain matrix is obtained by choosing the weighting matrices and solving the Riccati equation. Control forces are applied to the system via a feedback loop. A seven mass rotor system is simulated for illustration. A relationship between the number of sensors and the number of modes used in the optimal control model is investigated. Comparisons of responses are made for various configurations of modes, sensors, and actuators. Furthermore, spillover effect is examined by comparing results from collocated and noncollocated sensor configurations. Results show that shaft vibration is significantly attenuated in the closed loop system.

    Description: The application of piezoelectric actuators for active vibration control (AVC) of rotating machinery is examined. Theory is derived and the resulting predictions are shown to agree closely with results of tests performed on an air turbine driven-overhung rotor. The test results show significant reduction in unbalance, transient and sub-synchronous responses. Results from a 30-hour endurance test support the AVD system reliability. Various aspects of the electro-mechanical stability of the control system are also discussed and illustrated. Finally, application of the AVC system to an actual jet engine is discussed.
