Notes: A novel approach is presented for obtaining approximate analytical expressions for the dispersion relation of periodic wavetrains in the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation with even potential function. By coupling linearization of the governing equation with the method of harmonic balance, we establish two general analytical approximate formulas for the dispersion relation, which depends on the amplitude of the periodic wavetrain. These formulas are valid for small as well as large amplitude of the wavetrain. They are also applicable to the large amplitude regime, which the conventional perturbation method fails to provide any solution, of the nonlinear system under study. Three examples are demonstrated to illustrate the excellent approximate solutions of the proposed formulas with respect to the exact solutions of the dispersion relation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary  This paper presents the exact relationships between the deflections and stress resultants of Timoshenko curved beams and that of the corresponding Euler-Bernoulli curved beams. The curved beams considered are of rectangular cross sections and constant radius of curvature. They may have any combinations of classical boundary conditions, and are subjected to any loading distribution that acts normal to the curved beam centreline. These relationships allow engineering designers to directly obtain the bending solutions of Timoshenko curved beams from the familiar Euler-Bernoulli solutions without having to perform the more complicated shear deformation analysis.

Notes: Abstract  The paper presents a computational method for characterizing the resonant frequency properties of cantilever pre-twisted plates composed of fibre-reinforced laminated composites. It aims to simulate a laminated turbomachinery blade or a fan blade with a relatively small aspect ratio for which the conventional beam model fails to provide accurate solutions. The strain and kinetic energy components are expressed in area integration equations with respect to the plate mid-surface. An energy functional is defined and a governing eigenvalue equation is derived. There is no domain mesh generation in the numerical analysis thus reducing accuracy loss due to discretization. New numerical solutions are presented and the effects of angle of pre-twist, aspect ratio, and symmetric and antisymmetric lamination for two different composite laminates are analyzed in detail. The limit of linear twisting curvature omitted in previous analysis is strictly adopted here and the consequences of exceeding the limit are discussed.

Notes: Summary Based on a refined first-order shear deformation theory, the vibratory characteristics of doubly-curved shallow shells of elliptical planform are investigated. Integral expressions incorporating the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia for the strain and kinetic energies are derived. The transverse shear strain components are obtained as linear functions of thickness in contrast to constant strains available in the current literature. With the use of the extremum energy principle, a governing eigen-matrix equation is formulated which is subsequently solved to extract the frequencies and mode shapes. The shallow shells considered here are the spherical, cylindrical and hyperbolic paraboloidal shells. The effects of various geometric parameters and boundary constraints on the resonant frequencies and mode shapes are examined. The solution method employs displacement functions comprising of a set of two-dimensional orthogonal polynomials and a basic function for each degree of freedom: three orthogonal displacement components and two rotations. The convergence of eigenvalues is examined. The validity of the present results is verified by comparing, if possible, with the values from the literature.

Notes: Summary Three-dimensional electromechanical responses of a piezoelectric bimorph are studied. The bimorph is antiparallel in the sense that it consists of two identical, plate-like piezoelectric elements with opposite poling directions. Both the top and bottom surfaces of the bimorph are fully covered with negligibly thin conductive electrodes. By introducing a small parameter and using the transfer matrix method it is shown that a three-dimensional solution of the problem can be readily constructed, provided the solution to a set of two-dimensional equations very similar to those in the classic plate theory is obtainable. The three-dimensional solution satisfies all the field equations as well as the boundary conditions on the major surfaces and at the interface between the two piezoelectric plates. In many special cases, the electric edge condition can be fulfilled point by point, and thus the solution is exact in Saint-Venant's sense. The formulation and new analytical results for a strip-shaped cantilever bimorph under the action of applied voltage and end moment are presented.

Notes: Summary A first known investigation on the vibratory characteristics of pretwisted composite symmetric laminates with trapezoidal planform is presented. A governing eigenvalue equation is derived based on the Ritz minimization procedure. This formulation shows that bending and stretching effects of these symmetric laminates are coupled by the presence of twisting curvature. For the solution method, a set of orthogonally generated shape functions is employed to approximate the transverse and in-plane displacements. These functions are generated through a proposed recurrence formula. During the orthogonalization process, a basic function is introduced to ensure the satisfaction of the essential boundary conditions. This proposed method is applied to determine the vibration response of the titled problem. The effects of angles of twist and laminated layers upon the vibration frequencies are examined. Convergence tests for selected examples are presented in which the accuracy of the results is established. It has been found that an increase in the angle of twist also strengthens the torsional stiffness of the laminated plates and therefore results in higher twisting frequencies. The present solutions, where possible, are verified by comparison with data of simplified examples that are available in the literature.

Notes: Summary This paper presents the free vibration of thin doubly-curved shallow shells of rectangular planform. The study covers wide combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Both positive and negative Gaussian curvatures (spherical and hyperbolic paraboloidal shells resepectively) are considered. Thepb-2 Ritz energy based approach, along with the in-plane and transverse deflections assumed in the form of a product of mathematically complete two-dimensional orthogonal polynomials and a basic function, is employed to model the vibratory characteristic of these shells. Numerical results have been established through convergence study and comparison with published data from the open literature. Extensive sets of new results for various ranges of aspect ratio, curvature ratio andx- andy-shallowness ratios have been presented for future reference.
