Notes: One isoform of maize glutamine synthetase, encoded by GS1-2, is localized exclusively in the maternal tissues of the developing kernel. Previously, we have demonstrated the ability of the proximal 664 base pair 5′ upstream portion of GS1-2 to drive maternal tissue-specific GUS expression in transgenic maize kernels (Muhitch et al. Plant Sci. 163: 865–872). In this report, a series of GS1-2 promoter/GUS reporter transgenes, progressively truncated from the 5′ end of the full length 664 base pair promoter, were evaluated for transformation efficiency and their ability to drive tissue-specific gene expression in transgenic maize. Analysis of transgene integration and expression suggests that GS1-2/GUS transgenes were incorporated efficiently into the maize genome, but were not expressed efficiently in maize cells. Truncation of the promoter from −664 to −394, −206 or −72, relative to the putative transcription start site, resulted in the loss of tissue specific expression within the kernels of transformed plants. Among the truncated series, moderate staining was exhibited by the −394 promoter/GUS gene transformants, stronger staining was found in −206 promoter/GUS gene transformants, but relatively weak and variable staining occurred in plants transformed with the −72/GUS gene. Likely explanations for these observations are considered.

Notes: Abstract A finite series approximation technique is introduced. We first applythis approximation technique to a semiparametric single-index model toconstruct a nonlinear least squares (LS) estimator for an unknown parameterand then discuss the confidence region for this parameter based on theasymptotic distribution of the nonlinear LS estimator. Meanwhile, acomputational algorithm and a small sample study for this nonlinear LSestimator are developed. Additionally, we apply the finite seriesapproximation technique to a partially nonlinear model and obtain some newresults.

Notes: In order to prevent sphalerite particles from coming together in leaching solution, and to reduce the loss of organic solvent, the surface modification of sphalerite concentrate with sodium lignosulfonate was investigated. The modified sphalerite concentrate particles were characterized by dispersion experiments, determination of adsorption rate of oil, determination of contact angle, FT-IR spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The results showed that the modified sphalerite concentrate particles exhibited good dispersibility in water. The sedimentation volume reduced from 0.85 ml•g-1 to 0.61 ml•g-1. The adsorption rate of oil reduced from 0.15 ml•g-1 to 0.06 ml•g-1. The contact angle between sphalerite concentrate particles and water changed from 86.9˚ before modification to 32.7˚ after modification with sodium lignosulfonate. The checking results of FT-IR and XPS spectra indicated that some modification regents were coated on the particle surface. The modifier combined to sphalerite concentrate particle surface through the chemical bond, resulting in the comprehensive stability action of static and steric effect

Notes: First, the forward kinematic model, the inverse kinematic model and the error model of akind of coordinate measuring machine (CMM) using 3-DOF parallel-link mechanism are establishedbased on the spatial mechanics theory and the total differential method, and the error model is verifiedby computer simulation. Then, the influence of structural parameter errors on probe position errors issystematically considered. This research provides an essential theoretical basis for increasing themeasuring accuracy of the parallel-link coordinate measuring machine. It is of particular importanceto develop the prototype of the new measuring equipment

Notes: The microstructure of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors can strongly affect thestructure of the carbon fibers which determine the final mechanical properties of carbon fibers. Theorientation factors ( n f [removed info] ) of PAN precursors under different draw ratios were characterized by thebirefringence ( [removed info]n f ), which was obtained through polarized microscopy. The results show that theincreasing of the draw ratio may enhance the degree of orientation, which can correspondinglyimprove the mechanical properties. However the increasing speed of the orientation factor slowsdown as the draw ratio reached to 8

Notes: The rheological properties and viscoelasticity of PAN/DMSO solutions were studied bymeans of revolving rheometer under the scan modes of steady shear rate and dynamic frequency. The effects of shear rate and temperature of PAN/DMSO solution on its Non-Newtonian viscousindex, zero shear viscosity, activation energy of viscous flow and modulus of the solutions werestudied. It was found that PAN/DMSO solution is a kind of pseudoplastic fluid. And the moretemperature of solution, the less Non-Newtonian viscous index at steady experiment curve, the lessthe loss modulus and storage modulus of solution at dynamics experiment curve. In addition, theliquidity and spinnability of the solution also increased when the temperature went up

Notes: Non-woven hemp fiber mat has been used to reinforce unsaturated polyester to makenatural fiber composites. Thermal properties of the hemp fiber mat were investigated to discover therange of heat treatment temperatures suitable for the hemp fiber mat. Loss of weight during heattreatment and absorption of moisture from the environment during storage of the hemp fiber mat werealso studied. Both hand lay-up technique and compression molding were used to make hemp matcomposites. Due to the low fiber fraction, no significant reinforcing effect was found in the compositemade by the hand lay-up technique. The effects of heat treatment of fibers, water content in the fibers, fiber fraction, and manufacture methods on tensile properties of the resulted composites wereinvestigated. Hemp mat composites with tensile strength and modulus comparable to those of [±45°]4glass fiber reinforced polyester were achieved by compression molding at a molding pressure of2MPa

Notes: Abstract Consider the modelY=X τ β+g(T)+ε. Hereg is a smooth but unknown function,β is ak×1 parameter vector to be estimated andε i is an random error with mean 0 and varianceσ 2. The asymptotically efficient estimator ofβ is constructed on the basis of the modelY i=X τ i β+g(T i)+ε i,i=1, ...,n, when the density functions of (X,T) andε are known or unknown. Finally, an asymptotically normal estimator ofσ 2 is given.
