    Description: Background: Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an inhibitor of endogenous nitric oxide synthase, which is the key synthase for nitric oxide (NO) production. Whether statins could protect endothelium by reducing ADMA concentration is unclear, and whether this effect is associated with the dose of statins usage is also needed further studied. Methods: Dyslipidemia rat model was produced by giving high-fat and high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks. Thereafter, low-dose (5 mg/kg body weight/day) and high-dose (20 mg/kg body weight/day) atorvastatin were orally prescribed for 4 weeks. Parameters of interest including lipid profiles, inflammatory and oxidative markers, NO production and plasma levels of ADMA and ADMA concentration of myocardium were evaluated. Liver enzymes and creatinine kinase (CK) were also detected for safety concern. Results: At baseline, all parameters were comparable between the sham and the dyslipidemia groups. At 8 weeks of dyslipidemia establishment, as compared to the sham group, body weight and lipid profiles were significantly elevated, and plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), malondialdehyde (MDA) and ADMA were concomitantly increased in accompanying with NO reduction in the dyslipidemia groups. With 4 weeks of atorvastatin therapy, as compared to the control group, lipid disorders and NO production were improved, and plasma levels of CRP, MDA and ADMA were significantly decreased in the high-dose atorvastatin group. ADMA concentration of cardiac tissues was also significantly reduced in the high-dose atorvastatin group. Notably, there was a trend to similar effects which did not reach statistical significance in the low-dose atorvastatin group when compared to the control group. Liver enzyme and CK were comparable after 4 weeks of atorvastatin therapy between groups. Conclusion: In rats with dyslipidemia, atorvastatin therapy could reduce plasma level of ADMA and ADMA concentration in cardiac tissues, and these effects are associated with the dose of atorvastatin therapy.

    Description: Today, more and more deep learning frameworks are being applied to hyperspectral image classification tasks and have achieved great results. However, such approaches are still hampered by long training times. Traditional spectral–spatial hyperspectral image classification only utilizes spectral features at the pixel level, without considering the correlation between local spectral signatures. Our article has tested a novel hyperspectral image classification pattern, using random-patches convolution and local covariance (RPCC). The RPCC is an effective two-branch method that, on the one hand, obtains a specified number of convolution kernels from the image space through a random strategy and, on the other hand, constructs a covariance matrix between different spectral bands by clustering local neighboring pixels. In our method, the spatial features come from multi-scale and multi-level convolutional layers. The spectral features represent the correlations between different bands. We use the support vector machine as well as spectral and spatial fusion matrices to obtain classification results. Through experiments, RPCC is tested with five excellent methods on three public data-sets. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation indicators indicate that the accuracy of our RPCC method can match or exceed the current state-of-the-art methods.

    Description: The impact of extreme weather events on the navigation environment in the inland waterways of the Yangtze River is an interdisciplinary hotspot in subjects of maritime traffic safety and maritime meteorology, and it is also a difficult point for the implementation of decision-making and management by maritime and meteorological departments in China. The objective of this study is to review the variation trends and distribution patterns in the periods of adverse and extreme weather events that are expected to impact on inland waterways transport (IWT) on the Yangtze River. The frequency of severe weather events, together with the changes in their spatial extension and intensity, is analyzed based on the ERA-Interim datasets (1979–2017) and the GHCNDEX dataset (1979–2017), as well as the research progresses and important events (2004–2016) affecting the navigation environment. The impacts of extreme weather events on IWT accidents and phenomena of extreme weather (e.g., thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and tornadoes) that affect the navigation environment are also analyzed and discussed. The results show that: (1) the sections located in the plain climate zone is affected by extreme weather in every season, especially strong winds and heat waves; (2) the sections located in the hilly mountain climate zone is affected particularly by spring extreme phenomena, especially heat waves; (3) the sections located in the Sichuan Basin climate zone is dominated by the extreme weather phenomena in autumn, except cold waves; (4) the occurrence frequency of potential flood risk events is relatively high under rainstorm conditions and wind gusts almost affect the navigation environment of the Jiangsu and Shanghai sections in every year; (5) the heat wave indices (TXx, TR, and WSDI) tend to increase and the temperature of the coldest day of the year gradually increases; (6) the high occurrences of IWT accidents need to be emphasized by relevant departments, caused by extreme weather during the dry season; and (7) the trends and the degree of attention of extreme weather events affecting IWT are ranked as: heat wave 〉 heavy rainfall 〉 wind gust 〉 cold spell 〉 storm. Understanding the seasonal and annual frequency of occurrence of extreme weather events has reference significance for regional management of the Yangtze River.

    Description: This study investigates the feasibility of distributed fiber optic sensor for corrosion monitoring of steel bars embedded in concrete. Two sensor installation methods are compared: (1) attaching the sensor along the bar and (2) winding the sensor on the bar. For the second method, optical fibers were winded spirally on steel bars with different spacings: 0 mm, 2 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm. Steel bar pull-out testing was conducted to evaluate the effect of presence of distributed sensor on the bond strength of steel–concrete interface. Electrochemical testing was carried out to assess the influence of the installation methods on the corrosion resistance of the reinforced concrete. Winding the optical fiber on steel bars with a 10-mm spacing does not affect the bond strength and corrosion resistance and allows real-time corrosion monitoring. The distributed sensor data can be used to estimate the corrosion induced steel loss and predict concrete cracking.

    Description: Ground coat enamels for low carbon steel that contain silica as a mill addition have been developed to study the changes of their properties. Acid-resistant commercial enamel where silica addition was varied from 0 to 10.0 wt % was used for this investigation. The effects of the addition on the corrosion resistance, thermal properties, electrical properties, and mechanical adherence of the enamel to low carbon steel were studied. The corrosion resistance of the steel enameled coupons was tested using a salt spray (fog) apparatus for time periods reaching 168 h at room temperature. It was found that, although the density was not affected, the adherence decreased with an increase in silica content. As expected, the silica addition decreased the coefficient of thermal expansion, which is directly related to the increasing stress between the glass and steel in accordance with the adherence results. A mill addition of 7.5 wt% of silica to the samples was sufficient to obtain adequate enamel adherence and good corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the addition of silica influenced the electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity measurements at room temperature and the conductivity measured in a wide frequency range (1 Hz–1 MHz). The dielectric permittivity measured at 1 MHz showed decrease after the addition of up to 7.5 wt% of silica.

In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient framework for multiscale and multifeatured hierarchical image segmentation (MMHS). First, the HSR image pixels were clustered into a small number of superpixels using a simple linear iterative clustering algorithm (SLIC) on modern graphic processing units (GPUs), and then a region adjacency graph (RAG) and nearest neighbors graph (NNG) were constructed based on adjacent superpixels. At the same time, the RAG and NNG successfully integrated spectral information, texture information, and structural information from a small number of superpixels to enhance its expressiveness. Finally, a multiscale hierarchical grouping algorithm was implemented to merge these superpixels using local-mutual best region merging (LMM). We compared the experiments with three state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms, i.e., the watershed transform segmentation (WTS) method, the mean shift (MS) method, the multiresolution segmentation (MRS) method integrated in commercial software, eCognition9, on New York HSR image datasets, and the ISPRS Potsdam dataset. Computationally, our algorithm was dozens of times faster than the others, and it also had the best segmentation effect through visual assessment. The supervised and unsupervised evaluation results further proved the superiority of the MMHS algorithm.
