Notes: Epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films on the SrTiO3(100) surface have been irradiated with 250 MeV Ag17+ ions at different nominal fluence values in the range of 5×1010–4×1011 ions/cm2, resulting in columnar defects. At low fluences these defects cause changes in material properties that are small and scale linearly with dosage. Above a threshold fluence value ∼3×1011 ions/cm2 dramatic changes are observed, including an order of magnitude increase in the resistivity and 50 K drop in the Curie temperature. Transmission electron microscopy measurements show that the changes are associated with a phase transformation of the undamaged region between the columnar defects. The transformed phase has a diffraction pattern very similar to that seen in charge-ordered La0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We propose that above a critical level of ion damage, strains caused by the presence of the columnar defects induce a charge-ordering phase transition that causes the observed dramatic changes in physical properties. We speculate that a conceptually similar surface-induced charge ordering may be responsible for the "dead layer" observed in very thin strained films, and the dramatic changes in optical properties induced by polishing, and that an impurity-induced charge ordering causes the extreme sensitivity of properties to lattice substitution. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The upper stability line for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+α (Bi-2212) was determined over the temperature range 540°–800°C and the oxygen partial pressure range 1.5 ×101-7.4× 10-3 atm using coulometric titration and high oxygen pressure annealing. The decomposition products resulting from Bi-2212 oxidation are CuO, two alkaline-earth bismuthates, and the Raveau phase, Bi11Sr9Cu5Oy. The main alkaline-earth bismuthate is a known phase of cation composition Bi:Sr:Ca = 2.00:2.48:1.19 (Bi:Sr:Ca 9:11:5). The other alkaline-earth bismuthate is a minor phase of cation composition Bi:Sr:Ca = 2.00:0.53:0.39. The kinetics for Bi-2212 decomposition are very slow; e.g., at 700°C in air, the reaction is incomplete after 7 days.

Notes: A thin-film sample of YBa2Cu3O7−δ on MgO was irradiated at room temperature with 50-keV 2H+ (deuterium) to a dose of 1×1016 ions cm−2. The film was mainly c-axis textured film, ∼360–420 nm thick, deposited by sputtering on 〈100〉 MgO substrate. The as-implanted sample was divided into several pieces and annealed in a flowing oxygen ambient using (i) a rapid thermal annealing oven, at various temperatures between 450 and 940 °C, and (ii) a conventional annealing furnace, at various temperatures between 100 and 350 °C. Analysis by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy shows that the implanted 2H is a fast diffuser in the 123 phase. The apparent activation temperature (energy) for 2H release from the initial traps within the YBCO film during the anneal is estimated to be ∼175 °C (∼0.97 eV), which is obviously lower than the apparent activation temperature (energy) for 2H release from the initial traps within the MgO substrate (∼550 °C, i.e., ∼1.78 eV). At 200 °C the diffusivity of 2H in the YBCO film is estimated to be ∼1.4×10−13 cm2/s. In the irradiated MgO, during the anneal the migration and release of 2H is thought to be radiation enhanced around the higher damage region. No diffusional broadening or diffusion tail toward the deeply undamaged region was observed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: SiO2 aerogels were prepared by a sol-gel method and supercritical drying. Introduction of nano-ZnO into nanopores of the SiO2 aerogels is performed by immersion, chemical reaction, and hydrolysis. Photoluminescence of these assemblies of nano-ZnO particles/SiO2 aerogels were systematically measured. For each assembly, a very strong photoluminescence (PL) band with the peak position of about 500 nm was observed. The luminescence intensities of the assemblies of nano-ZnO particles/SiO2 aerogels are 10–50 times higher than that of nanostructured ZnO bulks. The quantum efficiency of the PL band for the assemblies is in the range of 0.2%–1%. This luminescence enhancement effect is caused by the increase of the singly ionized oxygen vacancies in nano-ZnO particles, which are located in nanopores of the SiO2 aerogel. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Epitaxial thin films of ordered double-perovskite Sr2FeMoO6−y are deposited on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed-laser deposition using a two step growth process. Selection of growth conditions is found to lead to either highly conductive metallic thin films (residual resistivity of about 1 μΩ cm) or semiconducting films. The metallic films show a positive magnetoresistance (MR) as high as 35%, while the semiconducting films show a negative MR of −3%, at a temperature of 5 K and a field of 8 T. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Malus xiaojinensis, one of the most important wild genotypes in the genus Malus, is resistant to a variety of stresses such as Fe deficiency chlorosis, drought and cold. However, lack of knowledge of its genetic background prevents using genetic analysis to study those agronomic traits and corresponding gene functions. Here, as the first step towards construction of the linkage map of M. xiaojinensis, genetic analysis of the F1 triploid hybrids (M. xiaojinensis × M. baccata) was performed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Using 15 EcoRI- MseI primer combinations, 1110 AFLPs were identified, with 31.3% of M. xiaojinensis-, 12.7% of M. baccata-specific markers, 54.9% of common markers, and 1.2% of non-parental markers; 93.3% of the AFLP markers exhibit the expected segregation ratio. Thirty-two M. xiaojinensis-specific markers and 47 common markers display a 5 : 1 and 11:1 segregation ratios, respectively, suggesting that M. xiaojinensis is an autotetraploid, or at least an isosyndetic allotetraploid.

Notes: The eggs of Mugil cephalus were significantly larger than those of Epinephelus malabaricus, and E. coioides, while those of Sciaenops ocellatus were intermediate between E. coioides and M. cephalus. The distribution density of pores in the egg envelope of S. ocellatus was significantly different from that of E. malabaricus and E. coioides. The micropyle diameters were significantly different in the four species. The ultrastructure of the zona radiata surface, the distribution density of pores and the size of eggs were also useful characters for distinguishing among the four species, but the ultrastructural features of the micropyles were the most important of all for egg identification.
