Notes: The design and characterization of a scanning electron microscope based microindentor is presented. Dynamic, high magnification imaging of the indentor–specimen contact zone is possible, permitting observation of indent events. Applied load as a function of indentor tip displacement is continuously monitored during indentation. The maximum applied load capability of 20 N is measured to a resolution of 1 mN with a piezoelectric transducer mounted on the indentor shaft. Displacement is measured with a specially developed capacitance gauge that is again mounted on the indentor shaft near the indentor tip and records tip displacement with respect to the specimen surface to a resolution of 10 nm over a 100 μm range. The instrument is vacuum compatible, capable of remote operation, has a short measurement loop, and a potentially high bandwidth response. Results from a fiber push-down test on a SiC fiber reinforced glass ceramic are reported to illustrate the capability of the instrument in performing measurements across the nanoindentation and microindentation ranges.

Notes: The structure of cubic transition metal compounds VC1 − x, NbC1 − x, TiC1 − x, VN1 − x and TiN1 − x has been studied by electron diffraction. These compounds occur with large deviations from the stoichiometric composition and the carbides have been observed with long-range ordered carbon distributions for certain compositions and temperatures. For crystals of other compositions and temperatures electron diffraction patterns frequently contain diffuse bands of intensity which have a periodic distribution with respect to the reciprocal lattice points. The diffuse intensity follows a continuous surface of complex curvature in reciprocal space, is observed for all compounds except VN1 − x, and has the symmetry of the b.c.c. reciprocal lattice. These features indicate a short-range ordered non-stoichiometric vacancy distribution which is analysed in Part II of this series [Sauvage & Parthé (1972), Acta Cryst. A28, 607].

Notes: High-resolution solid-state 27Al NMR spectra have been obtained from ALON, β′-sialon and yttrium aluminate phases. The usefulness of 27Al magic-angle spinning NMR in phase characterization is shown by comparing different preparations of the yttrium aluminates. The sensitivity of the 27Al resonance position to the local environment means different units (e.g. AlN4, AlO4, AlO6) can readily be distinguished allowing oxynitride structures, containing elements of similar scattering factor, to be refined. This is exemplified for the β′-sialon phase. For quadrupolar nuclei (nuclear spin, I ≥ 1) such as 27Al (I = {{5}\over{2}}), interaction with the local electric field gradient can cause extensive broadening of the resonance such that the NMR spectrum may not precisely quantify the aluminium distribution.

Notes: Abstract The compositions of high magnesium content β″-magnesium sialon crystals within the 3M/4X plane of the Mg-Si-Al-O-N system indicate some form of metal atom ordering wihtin the β″ structure. Although it is not possible using X-ray diffraction to detect weak additional reflections arising from the ordering between magnesium, aluminium, and silicon atoms, such weak reflections are revealed on electron diffraction photographs for a β″ phase, resulting in a tripling of the hexagonal latticec-dimension. These show β″ to have a structure very similar to rhombohedral willemite (Zn2SiO4), with the (Mg, Al) metal atoms ordered with respect to the silicon atoms in a 2∶1 ratio. However, there are some additional weak diffraction spots with indices not obeying the rhombohedral condition of −h+k+l=3n. It is proposed that the structure of this β″ is identical to that of willemite and the extra spots are a result of some form of twinning, which implies the existence of “ordered microdomains”.

Notes: Abstract MgSiAlON 3M/4X liquids have been crystallized at slow cooling rates from the melt and isothermally at varying degrees of undercooling. Forsterite is always the primary crystallizing phase but the secondary phases vary with the degree of undercooling. A magnesium-substitutedβ′-sialon,β″, grows with forsterite via a coupled mechanism at a slow continous cooling rate. However,β″ is progressively replaced as the secondary phase by a petalite-type Mg-Si-Al-O-N phase and a fourth phase on isothermal crystallization at increasing degrees of undercooling. The compositions ofβ″ and Mg-petalite as analysed by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The compound NaMgF3 occurs in the system NaF-MgF2 and forms a eutectic with either component. The eutectic between NaF and NaMgF3 has been unidirectionally solidified and the phase morphology and crystallography examined by optical and electron microscopy coupled with electron diffraction. Solidification with the “complex-regular” morphology from faceted cellular projections on the solid/liquid interface occurs for compositions on both sides of the eutectic point. Extensive regions of rod-like morphology occur in specimens where one of the macrofacet planes, constituting the faceted projections, is perpendicular to the direction of heat extraction. An analysis of twinning observed in the NaMgF3 phase shows that it occurs in accommodation of lattice strain associated with a distortion of the unit cell axes on cooling from the growth temperature. These small distortions involve a progressive reduction in crystal symmetry from a cubic high temperature form to orthorhombic at ambient temperatures. The twins are not associated with the eutectic growth process in providing re-entrant edges to facilitate coupled growth of the two phases.
