Notes: Abstract A method of calculating the Arrhenius parameters has been proposed, based on an evaluation of the coordinates of intersection of greatly extended confidence regions determined in solving the inverse kinetic problem. The validity of this method is illustrated by comparison of the Arrhenius parameters found from non-isothermal and isothermal data reported by other investigators.

Notes: Abstract The compensation effect related to isoparametric correlations is analysed within the formal theory, and the statistical and physico-chemical aspects of these correlations are considered.

Notes: Abstract Various manifestations of the kinetic compensation effect are considered in reactions involving the participation of solid substances under isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, as well as manifestations of other isoparametric correlations. It is shown that isoparametric correlations can be used for the analysis of solid-phase reactions and the exclusion of artefacts in nonisothermal kinetics.

Notes: The methodological problem of correct estimation of invariant Arrhenius parameters Ǎ and Ě from nonisothermal experiments has been analyzed for thermal decomposition of commercial butyl rubber in inert atmosphere. It is shown that restriction of the kinetic analysis by varying n in the function f(α) = (1 - α)n may yield incorrect Ǎ and Ě. It is necessary to apply the set of f(α) known in the formal topochemical reactions kinetics for correct estimation of Ǎ and Ě.

Notes: The paper gives an analysis of the data reported by J. D. Cooney and others. [J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 29, 911 (1984)] on the kinetics of oxidative degradation of flame-retardant polyesters [poly(ethylene terephthalate)]. A linear correlation is shown to exist between the parameters of the kinetic compensation effect. A formal interpretation of the correlation is given as well as its interpretation within two alternative polyester degradation schemes. The above correlation allowed the invariant kinetic parameters of the process log  = 15.7±1.3;Ê = 183±16 (min-1; kJ/mol) to be estimated, which seem to characterize the destruction of the polyester bond in the presence of oxygen. It is shown that  and Ê may be used to characterize the kinetics of polyester oxidative degradation during combustion, while the compensation parameter T̂; may characterize the flame-retardant effect.

Notes: Partial substitution of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) by manganese dioxide (MnO2) in polyamide 6 (PA-6) fire retarded with 20% of APP strongly increases the fire retardant effect. ‘Linear pyrolysis’ experiments, which are modified cone calorimeter tests, show an increase in the amount and an improvement of the shielding properties of the intumescent char formed on the surface of burning polymer. The enhancement of the yield of aliphatic-aromatic char stable to oxidation was observed in thermogravimetry under air. The fire retardant action of an APP/MnO2 mixture in PA-6 is twofold. On the one hand, this additive promotes involvement of the polymer in the charring and, on the other, the formed manganese phosphate glasses improve the thermo-insulating properties of the intumescent char on the surface of burning PA-6.
