Photochemical Cycloaddition of Benzene to 1,3-Dioxoles and 1,4-Dioxene Part 1: Preparative ResultsPhotoexcited benzene adds to 1,3-dioxole (la) and to its 2,2-dimethyl derivative lb with formation of 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-cycloadducts 3 - 8. While the 1,2-adducts show exclusively exo-stereochemistry the 1,3-addition leads to both exo- and endo-products. The 1,4-adducts are formed in a photochemical secondary reaction starting from the 1,2-adducts. 2-Methyl-1,3-dioxole (1 c) behaves similarly. However, benzene forms with 1,4-dioxene (2) mainly a 1,2-adduct. These results are compared with predictions on the basis of Bryce-Smith's empirical rule 10). The chemistry and photochemistry of the new products were investigated.
Notes:
