Summary Detonation is considered as a reactive multiphase flow, and initiation occurs if energy is released in the shock-zone. Processes able to manage this in liquids and crystalline solids are discussed with reference citations. The shock zone is considered as a resonator. Initiation and steepening up of the reactive flow is readily understood by theRijke-Rayleigh model. The detonation velocity andvon-Neumann-spike correspond nonrelaxed states, whereas the detonation pressure is a relaxed pressure. A relaxed velocity cannot be found since it is below the detonation velocity. The bubbles show high acoustic power to be dissipated in the nearfield of radiation. Initiation by viscous dissipation or by hot-spots such is a very similar effect. Also the low velocity detonation is contained within the model as a special case. Up to now it is not clear, whether the classical approach is comprised in this model or not, but some details are understandable which had been not in the classical view. Furthermore some faulty results of the classical approach had been discovered in stipulation with modern experimental results, not present in the outlined view.
Notes:
