Description: Traditionally, magneto-dielectric effects have been developed by combining ferroelectric and magnetic materials. Here, we show a magneto-dielectric effect from optically-generated intermolecular charge-transfer states in an organic semiconducting donor:acceptor (PVK:TCNB) system. We observe in magnetic field effects of photoluminescence that a magnetic field can change singlet/triplet population ratio in intermolecular charge-transfer states. Furthermore, our theoretical analysis and experimental evidence indicate that the singlets and triplets in charge-transfer states have stronger and weaker electrical polarizations, respectively. Therefore, the observed magneto-dielectric effect can be attributed to magnetically-dependent singlet/triplet ratio in intermolecular charge-transfer states. In principle, a magneto-dielectric effect can be generated through two different channels based on magneto-polarization and magneto-current effects when the singlet/triplet ratio in intermolecular charge-transfer states is changed by a magnetic field. We find, from the simulation of dielectric effects, that magneto-polarization and magneto-current effects play primary and secondary roles in the generation of magneto-dielectric effect. Description: A nanosecond pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge (NPSDBD) is a promising method for flow control and combustion. We systematically investigated the influence of pulse parameters on the discharge characteristics of NPSDBD, especially on the conduction current of discharge and the energy deposition curves. Meanwhile, the differences of the characteristics of the discharge generated by positive pulses and negative pulses are focused in this paper. The underlying physics is also discussed. Four different discharge regimes of NPSDBD are presented, which can be distinguished by the temporal emission behaviors of discharge and the conduction current of discharge. The transitions of four discharge regimes were also investigated by changing the pulse amplitude, repetitive rate, and voltage polarity. It was found that it is easier to translate quasi-uniform discharge to filamentary discharge or transition mode for the repetitive pulses with a negative polarity. A phenomenological model was proposed to explain the differences between a positive repetitive pulse discharge and a negative repetitive pulse discharge.

Description: Article Cancer stem cells are a small proportion of tumours that often confer resistance to chemotherapy but how these cells are maintained is unclear. Here, Zhu et al . study hepatocellular carcinoma stem cells and identify C8orf4 as a negative regulator of Notch2, which is required for the self-renewal of the cells. Description: Three new depsidones, botryorhodines E–G ( 1 – 3 ), and two new isoindolinones, meyeroguillines A and B ( 7 and 9 ), along with five known compounds were isolated from an endophytic fungus Meyerozyma guilliermondii , derived from the mangrove plant Kandelia obovata. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry (HREIMS). Compounds 1 – 6 exhibited strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC 50 values ranging from 2.1 to 13.3 μM. Moreover, kinetic studies of compounds 2 and 6 showed that both of them were noncompetitive inhibitors of α-glucosidase. Beilstein J. Org. Chem. 2015, 11, 1187–1193. doi:10.3762/bjoc.11.133

Description: MPC has the ability to optimize the system operation parameters for energy conservation. Recently, it has been used in HVAC systems for saving energy, but there are very few applications in radiant cooling systems. To implement MPC in buildings with radiant terminals, the predictions of cooling load and thermal environment are indispensable. In this paper, a simplified thermal model is proposed for predicting cooling load and thermal environment in buildings with radiant floor. In this thermal model, the black-box model is introduced to derive the incident solar radiation, while the genetic algorithm is utilized to identify the parameters of the thermal model. In order to further validate this simplified thermal model, simulated results from TRNSYS are compared with those from this model and the deviation is evaluated based on coefficient of variation of root mean square (CV). The results show that the simplified model can predict the operative temperature with a CV lower than 1% and predict cooling loads with a CV lower than 10%. For the purpose of supervisory control in HVAC systems, this simplified RC thermal model has an acceptable accuracy and can be used for further MPC in buildings with radiation terminals.

Description: The ecological status of the semi-arid steppes in China is fragile. Under the long-term and high-intensity development of mining, the ecological integrity and biodiversity of steppe landscapes have been destroyed, causing soil pollution, grassland degradation, landscape function defect, and so on. Previous studies have mainly focused on ecosystem health assessment in mining areas. Landscape ecological health (LEH) pays more attention to the interactions between different ecosystems. Therefore, the ecological assessment of mining cities is more suitable on a landscape scale. Meanwhile, the existing LEH assessment index systems are not applicable in ecologically fragile areas with sparse population, underdeveloped economy, and in relatively small research areas. The purpose of this study was to construct a LEH assessment index system and evaluate the LEH of a mining city located in a semi-arid steppe. Xilinhot is a typical semi-arid steppe mining city in China. The contradictions between the human, land and ecological environment are serious. A new model Condition, Vigor, Organization, Resilience, and Ecosystem (CVORE) model was constructed that integrated five subsystems (services) from the perspectives of ecology, landscape ecology, mining science, and geography. This study used the CVORE model to systematically evaluate the LEH in Xilinhot city in terms of five LEH levels, including very healthy, healthy, sub-healthy, unhealthy and morbid landscape. Research results show that the areas of the very healthy, healthy, sub-healthy, unhealthy and morbid landscapes are 13.23, 736.35, 184.5, 66.76 and 20.63 km2, respectively. The healthy landscapes area accounts for 72.08% and most grasslands are healthy. The sub-healthy landscapes are mainly located around areas with higher disturbances due to human activities. The morbid or unhealthy landscapes are concentrated in the mining areas. The proposed CVORE model can enrich the foundations for the quantitative assessment of Landscape Ecological Health of Mining Cities in Semi-arid Steppe (LEHMCSS). This study provided a new LEH assessment approach (CVORE model), which can support landscape ecological restoration, ecological environmental protection and urban planning of the semi-arid steppe mining cities.

Description: The promise of the metamorphic growth paradigm is to enable design freedom of the substrate selection criteria beyond current choices that are limited by lattice matching requirements. A demonstration of this emerging degree of freedom is reported here by directly comparing identical laser structures grown both pseudomorphically on a GaSb substrate and metamorphically on a GaAs substrate. Improved thermal performance of the metamorphic laser material enables a higher output power before thermal roll-over begins. These performance gains are demonstrated in minimally processed gain-guided broad-area type-I lasers emitting close to 2- μ m wavelengths and mounted p-side up. Continuous wave measurements at room temperature yield a T 0 of 145 K and peak output power of 192 mW from metamorphic lasers, compared to a T 0 of 96 K and peak output power of 164 mW from identical lasers grown pseudomorphically on GaSb.

Description: The paper proposes a new nonlinear dynamic econometric model with fractional derivative. The fractional derivative is defined in the Jumarie type. The corresponding discrete financial system is considered by removing the limit operation in Jumarie derivative’s. We estimate the coefficients and parameters of the model by using the least squared principle. The new approach to financial system modeling is illustrated by an application to model the behavior of Japanese national financial system which consists of interest rate, investment, and inflation. The empirical results with different time step sizes of discretization are shown, and a comparison of the actual data against the data estimated by empirical model is illustrated. We find that our discrete financial model can describe the actual data that include interest rate, investment, and inflation accurately.
