Notes: Ti(C,N)-based ceramics that contained NbC, TaC, and WC were exposed at 1373 K in air for 10 h to study the effect of these metal carbides on the oxidation resistance. The addition of 10 mol% of NbC and 10 mol% of TaC to Ti(C,N) ceramics improved the oxidation resistance, whereas additions of 10 mol% of WC worsened the oxidation resistance. Weight gain due to the oxidation of Ti(C,N) ceramics with added WC varied in a complicated way, relative to the amount of WC that was involved. There was a competition between weight gain due to the oxidation and weight loss due to the volatile tungsten oxide.

Notes: Structural and optical properties of Cd1−xHgxGa2Se4 and Cd1−xHgxGa2Se4:Co2+ single crystals grown by the chemical transport reaction method have been investigated. It has been found that these single crystals have a defect chalcopyrite structure and a direct optical energy gap. It has been seen that the optical energy gap decreases as a composition x increases and as a cobalt impurity is introduced. The temperature dependence of the optical energy gap is well presented by the Varshni equation. Impurity optical absorption peaks due to a cobalt atom were observed in the optical-absorption measurements of Cd1−xHgxGa2Se4:Co2+ single crystals. It has been analyzed that the impurity optical-absorption peaks are attributed to the electronic transition between the split energy levels of a Co2+ ion occupying a cubic Td symmetry site of the host lattice. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the observation of the quantum confinement effect by using photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS) experiment and the time dependence of optically induced degradation in CdS and CdSe semiconductor-doped glasses. The observed absorption peaks in the PDS experiment, together with a simple model, were used to evaluate the average radius of semiconductor microcrystals. It is found that the estimated average radii of quantum dots are consistent with that obtained from other methods. This result demonstrates that the PDS technique provides an alternative tool for the study of the optical properties of semiconductor microscrystals. The time dependence of the luminescence degradation of the impurity band, which is attributed to the process of Auger ionization, follows a stretched-exponential function. The inconsistency with the previously proposed exponential relaxation may be due to the size distribution of CdS and CdSe microcrystals.

Notes: This paper addresses the dearth of empirical research on the relationship between service guarantee and perceived service quality (PSQ). In particular, we examine the moderating effects of a service guarantee on PSQ. While a recent study provided empirical evidence that service quality is affected by service guarantee and employee variables such as employee motivation/vision and learning through service failure, the nature and form of the relationships between these variables remain unclear. Knowledge of these relationships can assist service managers to allocate resources more judiciously, avoid pitfalls, and establish more realistic expectations. Data was obtained from employees and customers of a multinational hotel chain that has implemented a service guarantee program in 89 of its hotels in America and Canada. As the employee variables could affect performance in a non-linear fashion, we relaxed the assumption of model linearity by using the Alternating Conditional Expectations (ACE) algorithm to arrive at a better-fitting, non-linear regression model for PSQ. Our findings indicate the existence of significant non-linear relationships between PSQ and its determinant variables. The ACE model also revealed that service guarantee interacts with the employee variables to affect PSQ in a non-linear fashion. The non-linear relationships present new insights into the management of service guarantees and PSQ. Explanations and managerial implications of our results are presented and discussed.

Notes: The process of management research involves various complexities and can sometimes be viewed as highly time consuming. Good research can and does provide a momentum for further research to be undertaken and this means that a researcher may have to think "outside the box" in order to achieve new insights. A researcher may also need to adopt a rather "risky" research strategy that encapsulates the critical theory approach, if they are to achieve something unique. However daunting this appears, it should be appreciated that the processes of globalization and interconnectivity allow various methodological approaches to be used vis-à-vis the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. In order that new models, concepts and theories can be produced, it is necessary for researchers to engage in theory building, and to try out methods such as the grounded theory approach.

Notes: In order to develop a sustainable competitive advantage in the knowledge based economy, senior managers need to ensure that customer relationship management is placed within a clearly defined organizational culture that embraces organizational learning. Senior managers are required to exhibit a proactive approach to leadership that results in creative solutions being found to solve complex problems. Open communication reinforces the decision-making process and allows mutually based partnership arrangements to develop. This being the case, the network approach to business development can be viewed, as collectivist in orientation and this should allow partnership arrangements to be developed through time.

Notes: The strategic marketing concept requires that marketers adopt an internal and an external focus, and it provides a conceptual basis for devising a customer service policy. Providing customer satisfaction is central to achieving a competitive advantage and should be viewed as an integral part of relationship building that is underpinned by organizational learning. A defined organizational culture can provide the necessary leadership that ensures that staff attain high levels of performance. When planning overseas market entry strategies, strategists need to take into account market intelligence available about the cultural traits evident in national culture. This will facilitate the development of partnership arrangements and result in mutuality.

Notes: Ti(C,N)-based ceramics that contained various carbides were prepared via pressureless sintering, to study the effects of the carbides on the microstructure and properties of the ceramics. All the systems showed good densification behavior and formed solid solutions. Impurities introduced from the milling media were sufficient to promote the densification of the ceramics. The grain structures of the systems were a function of carbide crystal structure and their affinity with nitrogen. Microhardness, three-point flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the Ti(C,N)-based ceramics were measured and determined to be 16-18 GPa, 0.7-1.1 GPa, and 3.5-5.5 MPa·m1/2, respectively.
