    Notes: We report experimental observation of periodic oscillation in a steady state electron cyclotron resonance argon plasma that is not driven by extra periodic forces. We interpret the oscillation according to the predator-prey model, which is a nonlinear plasma-neutral coupling in the plasma production region. The oscillation is observed in a narrow plasma parameter window and is evidence for neutral density depletion in a high density plasma system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: FADD is a mammalian pro-apoptotic mediator consisting of the N-terminal death effector domain (DED) and the C-terminal death domain (DD). The N-terminal 88-residue fragment of murine FADD was defined as the stable structural unit of DED, as determined by proteolytic digestion and conformational analysis. This domain induced bacterial as well as mammalian cell death, whereas the full-length or DD of FADD did not. The Escherichia coli cells expressing FADD-DED showed elongated cell morphology and an increased level of nicked chromosomal DNA and mutation. The lethality of FADD-DED was abolished by co-expression of thioredoxin and superoxide dismutase or relieved by the addition of vitamin E as a reducing agent and under anaerobic growth conditions. The toxicity of FADD-DED was genetically suppressed by various oxidoreductases of E. coli. All these results suggest that the death effector domain of mammalian FADD induced bacterial cell death by enhancing cellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

    Notes: This paper investigates the sampling behavior of the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator of the Gaussian GARCH(1,1) model. The rescaled variable (the ratio of the disturbance to the conditional standard deviation) is not required to be Gaussian nor independent over time, in contrast to the current literature. The GARCH process may be integrated (α + β = 1), or even mildly explosive (α + β 〉 1). A bounded conditional fourth moment of the rescaled variable is sufficient for the results. Consistent estimation and asymptotic normality are demonstrated, as well as consistent estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix.

    Notes: The level of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs) concentration in blood of 4 chemists conducting dioxin analysis at a laboratory was estimated. The level of PCDDF/s concentration ranged from 4.48 pg I-TEQ/g-fat to 8.17 pg ITEQ/ g-fat (mean level : 6.19 pg I-TEQ/g-fat, median level : 6.07 pg I-TEQ/g-fat, standard deviation in this study : 1.51 pg I-TEQ/g-fat). The level of PCDD/Fs in bloods of the chemists in this study is not higher compared with other studies in Korea. The portion of PCDFs to the total PCDD/F I-TEQ concentration in this study was found to be over 80%. This is not the case in othercountries where the portion of PCDDs to the total TEQ in blood was generally much higher than that of PCDFs. In Korea, the portion of PCDFs to the total PCDD/F I TEQ concentration in food was higher than that of PCDDs. In other countries, the portion of PCDFs was relatively lower. It is considered that the portion of PCDFs in blood has interrelation with that of PCDFs in food in both Korea and other countries

    Notes: Abstract The effect of addition of antimony oxide and/or sodium nitrate to silicate glass compositions upon the changes in the relative concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide in their bubbles from heat treatment was investigated using the Raman microprobe technique. The addition of antimony oxide to these glasses increased the relative rates of oxygen dissolution from their bubbles with respect to glasses containing no refining agents. These increases were closely related to the absolute amounts of Sb3+ ions that were present in the glasses. The relative rates were faster for glasses containing antimony oxide than for glasses containing the same molar amounts of arsenic oxide. The higher Sb3+/Sb5+ ratios for glasses containing antimony oxide with respect to the As3+/As5+ ratios for glasses containing arsenic oxide caused the relative rates of oxygen dissolution to be dramatically greater for the former glasses. In contrast to an earlier investigation with silicate glasses containing arsenic oxide, the addition of sodium nitrate to glasses containing antimony oxide using a similar glass preparation did not significantly change their relative rates of oxygen dissolution.

    Notes: Abstract The infrared reflectance and transmission spectra of amorphous CdGe x As2 were investigated to study the amorphous structure with varying Ge content. The mid-infrared optical absorption edges of amorphous CdGe x As2 with 0〈x〈1.2, were observed in the range 1.6–1.7 μm, indicating a structural similarity in short-range order throughout. Comparing the reflectance and transmission spectra of amorphous and devitrified crystalline phases established that the structures of amorphous CdGe x As2 transformed from the CdAs2 basic structure to the chalcopyrite (CdGeAs2) structure, as one progressed fromx=0 tox=1.2. The infrared spectra were interpreted interactively with radial distribution function, magnetic susceptibility, density measurements, and crystallization studies. The crystallization behaviour of amorphous CdGe x As2 that was heat treated at different temperatures was investigated using far-infrared transmission spectra.
