    Notes: Abstract: This paper proposes a fuzzy post adjustment (FPA) mechanism so that human knowledge and machine knowledge can be integrated more synergistically to improve the performance of expert systems. Machine knowledge means knowledge algorithmically derived from past instances. Human knowledge implies (1) expert knowledge judging the trends of external factors and (2) user knowledge representing users’personal views about information given by both expert knowledge and machine knowledge. We consider an expert system that uses the FPA mechanism to incorporate the effect of external factors effectively into its inference process. The goal of this expert system is stock market timing prediction, which is divided into four kinds: bull, edged-up, edged-down and bear. Empirical tests showed that the proposed FPA mechanism can improve the performance of an expert system significantly, even in a turbulent decision-making environment.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a new approach using pattern recognition techniques is suggested for time series modeling which means identification of a time series into one of autoregressive moving-average models. Its main recipe is that pattern is derived from a time series and classified into a suitable model via a notion of pattern matching. The pattern is obtained from extended sample autocorrelations of the time series. The pattern recognition techniques used are learning and decision tree classifier. Learning is used in combination with linear discriminants whose goal is to discriminate one pattern from another. Decision tree classifier divides decision procedures involved in time series modeling into simpler and local decisions at each node of a decision tree. To facilitate complex tree search, knowledge-based approach is used. To implement the idea, a scheme of decision support system is employed to develop a prototype system named PRTSM (Pattern Recognition-based Time Series Modeler). Experimental results with several examples show that a pattern recognition-based approach can yield a promising solution to the time series modeling.

    Description: The enormous volume and largely varying quality of available reviews provide a great obstacle to seek out the most helpful reviews. While Naive Bayesian Network (NBN) is one of the matured artificial intelligence approaches for business decision support, the usage of NBN to predict the helpfulness of online reviews is lacking. This study intends to suggest HPNBN (a helpfulness prediction model using NBN), which adopts NBN for helpfulness prediction. This study crawled sample data from Amazon website and 8699 reviews comprise the final sample. Twenty-one predictors represent reviewer and textual traits as well as product traits of the reviews. We investigate how the expanded list of predictors including product, reviewer, and textual characteristics of eWOM (online word-of-mouth) has an effect on helpfulness by suggesting conditional probabilities of the binned determinants. The prediction accuracy of NBN outperformed that of the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) method and the neural network (NN) model. The results of this study can support determining helpfulness and support website design to induce review helpfulness. This study will help decision-makers predict the helpfulness of the review comments posted to their websites and manage more effective customer satisfaction strategies. When prospect customers feel such review helpfulness, they will have a stronger intention to pay a regular visit to the target website.

    Description: More and more these days, airport security is having to adapt to a greater number of passengers while keeping within finer margins of precision when it comes to clearing passengers for security clearance. Therefore, analyzing potential upgrades in the security process and adopting them in a way that does not impact passenger experience has become a key activity for airport managers. One viable technological solution that is not only effective but also efficient is biometric security. This technology allows for passengers to safely clear security based on their unique biometric features. Despite its promise, airports and passengers alike are slow to adopt its use. Additionally, there were few studies that revealed insights into passengers’ intentions toward repeat use of biometric security. Hence, in our novel attempts to uncover the underlying reasons, we implemented a study on passengers’ initial and repeat usage intention based on perceived benefits and risks of biometric security technology. Based on 327 survey responses, we employed the use of SEM to extract first- and second-order constructs before evaluating our hypotheses on a finally accepted model. To be aligned with the novel attempt of this research, the results showed that both the perceived benefits and risks have a significant impact on passenger’s initial and repeat use intention of biometric security. Therefore, for all practitioners engaged in sustainable airport management, strong consideration from this research should help in creating value for passengers while mitigating the risks of adopting biometric security within airport security settings.

    Description: Advertising copies have been considered as a fundamental strategy for firms to continue sustainable marketing strategies. In order to provide the advancement of previous research and practical implication to marketers in the field for sustainable marketing strategy, this research tried to reveal the role of emotional and rational appeals as well as hidden heterogeneity of consumers in the appeal–value–trust–satisfaction–WOM framework. By applying the PLS-SEM and PLS-POS approach to 230 valid questionnaire samples, we could discover the role of appeals in the framework as well as three types of unobserved heterogeneity among the respondents. Both emotional and rational appeals had significant influences on the value–satisfaction–trust–WOM context. In addition, for hidden consumer traits in advertising copies, we revealed three types of consumer groups: Type 1, the consumer group with a rational orientation (n = 68); Type 2, the group with an emotional orientation (n = 74) and Type 3, the group with a utilitarian orientation. This research provided contributions by offering some insight into ways to establish sustainable marketing strategies in advertisements and to address unobserved heterogeneity consumers in advertising copy appeals.

    Description: This research analyzed the moderating effects of the continental factor on the relation between the business strategies (cost advantage strategy and differentiation strategy) of the pharmaceutical industry and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) performance. A total of 1303 M&A cases were collected from the Bloomberg database between 1995 and 2016 for the sake of empirical analyses. The independent variables were represented by the cost advantage strategy and the differentiation strategy. The dependent variable was for the M&A performance, which was measured for the changes in ROA (return on assets). The results showed that the cost advantage strategy was advantageous when an Asian firm acquired one in either Asia or Europe. In contrast, when a European company received one in either Europe or Asia, M&A performance also was higher, although the cost was higher. On the other hand, the differentiation strategy was valid only when a European firm acquired one in Asia. The moderating effect of the continental factor was beneficial only in the relation between the cost advantage strategy and M&A performance. These results could help companies make decisions that maximize M&A performance based on continental factors from the perspective of the sustainable international business strategy establishment.

    Description: For Internet banking to compete effectively with traditional brick-and-mortar banking, managers must identify the key determinants of customer satisfaction. While many studies exist on Internet banking, and there is a large base of marketing literature on customers’ perceptions of luxury products, research on the service quality of luxury brands in Internet banking is scarce. Our study investigates service quality that exert influence on customer satisfaction with Internet banking most, along with the moderating role of customer type on the relation between service quality and customer satisfaction. The moderation analysis in our study is the test of difference between general customers and VIP customers which are created according to customer type. Using a web survey of 645 general and VIP (very important person) customers who use Internet banking systems, we examined the effects of fix factors that have an influence on service quality: usefulness, ease of use, and system security, reliability, responsiveness, and empathy. In the full sample, all factors that affect Internet banking quality also affected customer satisfaction significantly. Usefulness, ease of use, and system trust, responsiveness, and empathy are more important in VIP customer satisfaction than in that of general customers, while system security is a more important factor for general than for VIP customers. Our study results indicate that general and VIP customers differently perceive service quality that are relevant to customer satisfaction.

    Description: For the sake of maintaining sustainable airport operations, biometric e-gates security systems started receiving significant attention from managers of airports around the world. Therefore, how to reduce flight passengers’ perceived resistance to the biometric e-gates security system became much more important than ever. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to analyze the factors which contribute to passenger’s resistance to adopt biometric e-gate technology within the airport security setting. Our focus lies on exploring the effects that perceived risks and benefits as well as user characteristics and propagation mechanisms had on causing such resistance. With survey data from 339 airport users, a support vector machine (SVM) model was implemented to provide a tool for classifying resistance causes correctly, and csQCA (crisp set Qualitative Comparative Analysis) was implemented in order to understand the complex underlying causes. The results showed that the presence of perceived risks and the absence of perceived benefits were the main contributing factors, with propagation mechanisms also showing a significant effect on weak and strong resistance. This study is distinct in that it has attempted to explore innovation adoption through the lens of resistance and in doing so has uncovered important complex causation conditions that need to be considered before service quality can be enhanced within airports. This study’s implications should therefore help steer airport managers in the right direction towards maintaining service quality while implementing sustainable new technologies within their current airport security ecosystem.

    Description: With the remarkable improvement in people’s socioeconomic living standards around the world, adolescent obesity has increasingly become an important public health issue that cannot be ignored. Thus, we have implemented its use in an attempt to explore the viability of scenario-based simulations through the use of a data mining approach. In doing so, we wanted to explore the merits of using a General Bayesian Network (GBN) with What-If analysis while exploring how it can be utilized in other areas of public health. We analyzed data from the 2017 Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey conducted directly by the Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, including 19 attributes and 11,206 individual data points. Our simulations found that by manipulating the amount of pocket money-between $60 and $80-coupled with a low-income background, it has a high potential to increase obesity compared with other simulated factors. Additionally, when we manipulated an increase in studying time with a mediocre academic performance, it was found to potentially increase pressure on adolescents, which subsequently led to an increased obesity outcome. Lastly, we found that when we manipulated an increase in a father’s education level while manipulating a decrease in mother’s education level, this had a large effect on the potential adolescent obesity level. Although obesity was the chosen case, this paper acts more as a proof of concept in analyzing public health through GBN and What-If analysis. Therefore, it aims to guide health professionals into potentially expanding their ability to simulate certain outcomes based on predicted changes in certain factors concerning future public health issues.
