    Note: Hydrocarbon systems, by nature, are a complex interplay of elements that must be spatially and temporally aligned to result in the generation and preservation of subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations. To meet the increasing challenges of discovering hydrocarbon resources, it is essential that we advance our understanding of these systems through new geochemical approaches and analytical developments. Such development requires that academic- and industry-led research efforts converge in ways that are unique to the geosciences. The aim of this volume is to bring together a multidisciplinary geochemical community from industry and academia working in hydrocarbon systems to publish recent advances and state-of-the-art approaches to resolve the many remaining questions in hydrocarbon systems analysis.     Notes: Excess noise is induced in thin gold films when the film is put in contact with an electrolytic solution. The magnitude of the noise changes as a function of the concentration of the ions in solution and follows a Temkin adsorption isotherm. Excess noise is also observed in a platinum wire exposed to water undergoing solidification. All measurements are made in the absence of an external applied bias. This implies that a dynamic process moving towards or at equilibrium can induce excess noise in a metal resistor.

    Notes: The hardware interrupt structure of an MS-DOSTM -based personal computer was used to enable real-time, keyboard manipulation of the control parameters of a stable, vertical magnetic suspension without halting its operation. The positions of objects suspended with this system were measured to be stable to within ±15 μm of a reference position. Stable suspensions were achieved at sampling rates as low as 45 Hz, although the system was typically operated at sampling rates of 1.0–2.0 kHz. The dynamics of the suspension were explored for several different values of proportional, integral, and derivative gains, and the system's transient response and steady-state behavior were characterized. We present here the data resulting from those studies, as well as measurements of the suspension's drift, empirically determined values of its second-order transfer function parameters, a discussion of the suspension's foreground/background capabilities, a description of its algorithm, and details of its electromechanical construction.

    Notes: Design studies of a novel magnetically suspended centrifuge suggest that such a device would be useful for investigating the nonlinear dynamics of interfacial waves in a rotating two-phase liquid. In its final form, the apparatus would use magnetic bearings, a directly-driven rotor, precision temperature control, and vibration isolation. The mechanical noise in the magnetic suspension coil of a preliminary apparatus was measured to be 3-μm rms in a 5-kHz bandwidth. However, these vibrations were attenuated by an active differentiator to the point where there was no observable oscillation in a 183-gram suspended test mass.

    Notes: Confocal microscopy and immuno-histochemistry were used to examine collagens in the extracellular matrix of cod Gadus morhua swimming muscle. In addition to the well known presence of type I fibrous collagen, types III and VI were also found in the myocommata and the endomysium. The beaded collagen, type VI, was found in the endomysium and the network forming collagen, type IV, was found in the basement membrane. This is the first report of type V collagen in cod muscle and of types II, IV and VI in the muscle of a teleost.

    Notes: In contrast to previous work, the distribution of cholinesterase was found to be ubiquitous in plant leaves. Cholinesterase activity was detected in 91% of the 70 species surveyed from 50 higher plants and three families of ferns. A radiometric assay was used to determine the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by leaf tissue slices in the presence and absence of 29 μM diisopropyl phosphofluoridate. The results obtained using this inhibitor as a criterion for cholinesterase activity were found to be consistent with previous studies using neostigmine as the inhibitor although there were some quantitative differences between the inhibitors. With some of the tested plants acetyl-β-methylcholine was also hydrolyzed, indicating that acetylcholinesterase rather than pseudocholinesterase was present at least in these cases. These findings demonstrate that the relative activity of cholinesterase in leaves can serve as an indicator of organophosphorous anticholinesterase contamination of the environment.
