    Notes: Dynamic behaviour analysis of electric power system has always played a vital role in operation and planning of power systems. This analysis relies on computer simulation which are usually based on simplifying assumptions which aim at rendering system modelling more amenable to numerical solution. However, it is well known that uncertainties and unmodelled dynamics could in some cases lead to unexpected results. In the paper a simplified dynamic model of transmission network is employed to evaluate the influence of network transients on dynamic behaviour of power systems. Although simplified, this model can easily capture usually neglected dynamics. Applications of this modelling is proposed with respect to two test systems, highlighting the effects of usually unmodelled dynamics.

    Notes: Electrical energy planning of modern electric power system requires great attention for the air pollution problem. This is in accordance to the increasing tendency to optimise the production processes in the respect of their sustainability. Moreover, the advent of the deregulation in the electric energy market has involved substantial modifications of philosophy in planning and managing the electrical power system. These aspects together offer new challenge in defining proper system study methodologies and suitable planning strategies. One of the most complex problems in the planning strategies is the data management uncertainty related to load forecasting and environmental modelling. In this paper a robust optimal planning procedure is formalized, taking adequately into account the problem of stochastic variables presence, allowing to satisfy the air quality and load demand forecast constraints in spite of uncertainties. The proposed approach addresses generation planning, where the various aspects have been integrated to solve the problem in a feasible and realistic way. A numerical application to an electrical power system with respect to a regional area is reported in the final part of the paper, showing the applicability of the proposed methodology.

    Notes: Transient stability is recognized as a critical problem for modern electrical power systems, since the deregulation could involve more and more restricted margins. Continuous improvements in power electronics technology gives the possibility to improve significantly the dynamic behaviour. Recently, a great attention in the relevant literature has been paid to Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) devices, showing their intrinsic ability to improve power transmission capability. In the paper, a control strategy for these devices is derived starting from a Control Lyapunov function, thus determining reference values for SMES active and reactive powers injections, able to counteract the effects of large disturbances. Hence, a new topology of the power conditioning system for interfacing SMES device with a power system is proposed. Finally, a control law based upon quasi-sliding technique is employed for tracking the required active and reactive powers. In the last part of the paper an application is presented, with reference to a test system, allowing to outline the flexibility and the goodness of the proposed control strategy.

    Notes: Series capacitive compensation in electrical power systems is generally recognized as a very economical and powerful means for increasing the transmission capability of long-distance transmission lines, resulting in relevant technical advantages in power system behavior: increased steady-state and transient stability margins, reduced voltage drop in receiving systems during occurrence of severe contingencies and reduction of transmission losses. In this paper, a general method for choosing the series compensation degree is proposed, focusing the attention on the transient stability aspect. The approach, based upon a probabilistic framework, allows to properly select - at the design stage - the optimal degree of series compensation in order to contain the instability risk at an acceptable value. The transient stability problem is formulated by using the transient energy function method. In order to show the feasibility of the proposed approach, a numerical application to the Cigre test network is performed in the final part of the paper.

    Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is the investigation of the main aspects of optimal reliability allocation with respect to the design of hybrid electric vehicles. In particular, with reference to the hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system, the problem of data uncertainty, due to a scarce knowledge of the components' reliabilities, is taken into account. This problem is crucial for new technology systems and it is faced with a Bayesian approach: components' reliabilities are considered as random variables, characterised in the paper by negative log-gamma distributions. Design/methodology/approach - The main aspects of optimal reliability allocation with the design of hybrid electric vehicles are presented, pointing out the opportunity of a reliability evaluation in the planning stage. Findings - The topic of a series hybrid vehicle reliability is addressed, nevertheless results can be easily extended to the parallel configuration. In particular, the opportunity of a reliability evaluation of the propulsion system in the design stage is highlighted, mainly when new technology components are involved. Originality/value - The value of the paper consists in the methodology allowing to express the system reliability uncertainty as a function of component uncertain data. Then, as far as concern the practical implications, the optimal allocation of the components' reliabilities can be efficiently performed, in order to minimise the system total cost respecting a prefixed value of the system reliability. In the final part of the paper, a numerical application, related to a series hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system, is presented to show the feasibility of the approach.

    Description: The paper deals with design and control of a fault tolerant and reconfigurable photovoltaic converter integrating a Battery Energy Storage System as a standby backup energy resource. When a failure occurs, an appropriate control method makes the energy conversion system capable of operating in open-delta configuration in parallel with the grid as well as in islanded mode. In case network voltage is lacking due to heavy anomalies or maintenance reasons, the proposed control system is able to quickly disconnect the inverter from the grid while ensuring the energy continuity to the local load and the emergency fixtures by means of the integrated battery packs. In particular, the paper proposes a fast islanding detection method essential for the correct operation of the control system. This specific technique is based on the Hilbert transform of the voltage of the point of common coupling, and it identifies the utility lack in a period of time equal to half a grid cycle in the best case (i.e., 10 ms), thus resulting in good speed performance fully meeting the standard requirements. A thorough numerical investigation is carried out with reference to a representative case study in order to demonstrate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

    Description: The loadability characteristics of overhead transmission lines (OHLs) is certainly not a new topic. However, driven by sustainability issues, the increasing need to exploit existing electrical infrastructures as much as possible, has given OHL loadability a renowned central role and, recently, new investigations on this subject have been carried out. OHL loadability is generally investigated by means of numerical methods. Even though this approach allows deducing useful information in both planning and operation stage, it does not permit to capture all the insights obtainable by an analytical approach. The goal of this paper is to tailor a general analytical formulation for the loadability of OHLs. The first part of the paper is devoted to the base-case of uncompensated OHLs. Later, aiming to demonstrate the inherent feasibility and flexibility of the novel approach proposed, the less frequent case of shunt compensated radial OHLs is investigated as well. The analytical formulation is combined with the use of circular diagrams. Such diagrams allow a geometrical interpretation of the analytical relationships and are very useful to catch the physical insights of the problem. Finally, in order to show the applicability of the new analytical approach, a practical example is provided. The example concerns calculation of the loadability characteristics of typical 400 kV single-circuit OHLs.

    Description: The paper deals with a novel method to measure inter-area oscillations, i.e., electromechanical oscillations involving groups of generators geographically distant from one another and ranging within the frequency interval from 0.1 Hz up to 1 Hz. The estimation of the parameters characterizing inter-area oscillations is a crucial objective in order to take the necessary actions to avoid the instability of the transmission electrical system. The proposed approach is a signal-based method, which uses samples of electrical signals acquired by the phasor measurement unit (PMU) and processes them to extract the individual oscillations and, for each of them, determine their characteristic parameters such as frequency and damping. The method is based on Hilbert transformations, but it is optimized through further algorithms aiming at (i) improving the ability to separate different oscillatory components, even at frequencies very close to each other, (ii) enhancing the accuracy associated with the damping estimates of each oscillation, and (iii) increasing the robustness to the noise affecting the acquired signal. Results obtained in the presence of signals involving the composition of two oscillations, whose damping and frequency have been varied, are presented. Tests were conducted with signals either synthesized in simulated experiment or generated and acquired with actual laboratory instrumentation.
