Notes: Microwave transmission spectra measured on the Tore Supra tokamak [Equipe Tore Supra, in Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Nice, 1988 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 1, p. 9] exhibit a systematic enhancement of the transmitted power at frequencies close to the electron gyrofrequency, often well beyond the corresponding level detected in vacuum. In order to explain such observations, the problem of electromagnetic wave propagation near the electron cyclotron frequency in a hot magnetized plasma is investigated in the framework of geometrical optics. The simple case of the ordinary mode injected vertically is studied by taking the finite plasma temperature and relativistic corrections to the dispersion relation into account, in contrast with the more familiar cold plasma ray-tracing approach. It is found that the ray trajectories are strongly affected by such effects in the anomalous dispersion region close to the cyclotron resonance. As a consequence of this analysis, it is shown that the local enhancement of the transmitted power observed experimentally can be explained as a focusing phenomenon related to hot-plasma corrections to the wave refractive index. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A variational method expressing the self-consistency of an electrostatic turbulence in a confined plasma is presented. It properly takes into account all types of resonances if the Kolmogorov broadening due the diffusion is small compared to the spectral width of the turbulent electric potential. The method is applied to study the possibility of a new type of drift turbulence in tokamaks where the various modes are strongly localized by nonlinear effects around their resonant surface. The passing electrons play a major role in driving such a turbulence, a result compatible with the observed increase of transport at the edge.

Notes: Abstract.  This paper extends the new hybrid Keynesian Phillips Curve (NKPC) to the open-economy context. We hypothesize that pricing decisions depend on both labour costs and intermediate imported input prices. The results for Hong Kong are consistent with the theory if import prices are given substantial weight in measuring marginal cost, rejecting the labour costs model. We find that forward-looking behaviour is dominant, and that price stickiness is smaller in Hong Kong than in the USA. The results are sensitive to the choice of instruments, and a model using the output gap instead of marginal cost as the forcing variable also performs well.

Notes: Abstract.  We provide empirical evidence on the dynamics of prices and wages in Hong Kong. The results suggest that the post-1997 deflation can be understood using a conventional macroeconomic framework wherein foreign influences constitute the basic underlying shocks, and adjustment processes in domestic wages and prices determine the details of the transmission mechanism. We find that the decline in local nominal prices owes much to declining prices of imported intermediate goods. The negative output gap and increase in unemployment during the deflation period also have their origin in foreign shocks, but the domestic wage adjustment process is an important contributing factor.

Notes: Linear ionic instability thresholds are numerically calculated for tokamaks. Proof is given that the stability domain is determined by trapped-ion modes for positive values of ηi=d(log Ti) /d(log ni). The boundary is characterized by ηi≥1 and a threshold LTi/R of order 0.2/(1+Ti/Te). This value is significantly smaller than previously predicted. Experimental temperature profiles in additionally heated discharges are usually marginal with respect to this criterion. It is also shown that marginal eigenmodes are low-frequency, low-wave-number modes, which may produce a very large transport once the ion temperature gradient threshold is reached.

Notes: Depth averaged conservation equations are written for granular surface flows. Their application to the study of steady surface flows in a rotating drum allows to find experimentally the constitutive relations needed to close these equations from measurements of the velocity profile in the flowing layer at the center of the drum and from the flowing layer thickness and the static/flowing boundary profiles. The velocity varies linearly with depth, with a gradient independent of both the flowing layer thickness and the static/flowing boundary local slope. The first two closure relations relating the flow rate and the momentum flux to the flowing layer thickness and the slope are then deduced. Measurements of the profile of the flowing layer thickness and the static/flowing boundary in the whole drum explicitly give the last relation concerning the force acting on the flowing layer. Finally, these closure relations are compared to existing continuous models of surface flows. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The plasma edge in tokamaks is known to be very turbulent. The nonlinear stability of a test mode is investigated in the presence of a helical potential perturbation, i.e., a "pump mode,'' which simulates the plasma turbulence. The particle trajectories in this perturbed equilibrium are derived using a Hamiltonian formalism. The electrons appear to have trapped trajectories in the potential well of the pump mode, while the ions experience a large convective motion. These two effects have a large influence on the test mode stability. First, nonlinearly trapped electrons supply an energy source for the test mode. Second, the ion convective motion introduces a radial scale of the test mode larger than the ion Larmor radius, in agreement with experimental data. These two phenomena allow a bifurcation in the turbulence level and therefore provide an explanation for the L–H transition.
