Description / Table of Contents: Summary After an exposure of pupae to 30° or 32°C during 1 to 4 days before emergence, adults were divided in two groups. Flies maintained at high temperatures (Go). At 30°, adults gave rise to imaginal G1 progeny only if pupal exposure was shorter than 48 hours. At 32°, there was no imaginal G1 progeny; but one knows that complete development is not possible at 32°. Flies transferred to 25° immediately after emergence (G'o). The rate of reproduction was always lower than that of the controls. Moreover: at each experimental temperature, a longer pupal exposure resulted in a lower rate of reproduction and a longer time of recovery; for each duration of each pupal exposure, the rate of reproduction was the lowest after treatment at 32°. When this treatment was applied during 4 days, the G'o adults never gave rise to progeny. These experiments were done with two strains: Oregon and Bar. The results showed that Bar is the more sensitive.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary After the hatching of the parasitic larva,Phanerotoma flavitestacea Fisch., the embryonic membrane persists around it during three days and a half. The different hypothetical roles of this membrane are discussed. Three are retained, on the base of our biological and physiological observations interesting this larva or different authors’ observations concerning other entomophagous insects. These roles are alimentary and protective functions for the parasite and action on the host physiology.

Notes: A laboratory colony of Oncopeltus fasciatus was found to be infected by Leptomonas oncopelti. The flagellates form a carpet attached to the cuticular intima of the rectal glands of adult bugs. The epithelial cells of these glands are characterized by infolded apical plasma membranes associated with mitochondria; the overlying cuticular intima shows endocuticular canals. The Leptomonas are attached by hemidesmosomes, located most often at the tip of the flagella. The Protozoa multiply by budding and the resultant straphangers cling to the parental flagellum. Adhesion of the flagellates to the cuticular lining is so strong that detaching flagellates carry with them the outer part of the epicuticle. Epicuticle repair presumably occurs through the endocuticular canals.
