Description: Two unusual blooms of dinoflagellates appeared in the Argentine Continental Shelf in spring/summer period of 1980 and 1981, but these differed, one from the other. The first was an intense red-tide with which were associated no signs of toxicity, whereas the second, although; not showing special coloration, was associated with (and doubtless the cause of) intense toxicity in bivalves of the Gulfs of San Matías and San José and of the shelf waters off Península Valdés; the death of two fishermen was atributed to the latter. The first bloom developed as an unusual surface concentration of the predatory dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans. It was supposed that this concentration was produced by a particular combination of processes of circulation of water masses. The second bloom was characterizaed by high concentrations of Gonyalax excavata. Investigations at the time determined that toxins in molluscs of the area correasponded to what is called "paralytic shellfish poison". The bloom of G. excavata was associated with a front between well mixed and well stratified water masses. The maximum toxicity centre occured in the mussel bank "Constanza" (42°23'27"S and 62°45'66"W) which coincides with the front referred to above. (PDF contains 93 pages)

Description: Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. We present preliminary information on a new fishery of patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832) in the Argentine Continental Shelf. A research program was conducted jointly by INIDEP and a fishing company during 1995 with the F/V Erin Bruce. The vessel, fishing equipment and processing on board are described. A total of 7235 fishing tows were performed during 246 days at sea. Seven new beds were located between 38º 50' S and 42º 30' S, along the 100-m isobath. Beds are discrete. Differences in the size structure by bed suggest that recruitment consists of sporadic pulses. Proportion of scallops and invertebrate by-catch also varies among bed. According to average CPUE, which ranges from 291 to 4,927 kg of commercial size scallops per towing hour, beds present different commercial interest. Available information indicates that a commercial fishery of the patagonian scallop is viable. We emphasize the continuation of studies in order to manage and develop the patagonian scallop fishery in Argentina.

Description: To evaluate absolute biomass, a research cruise was conducted on three scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds (38°S-56°W, September 1998). The estimated bed surface was 1,162 nm(2). Sampling stations were regularly spaced at 5 nm intervals. A total of 118 trawls were performed with a non-selective dredge 2,5 m wide (efficiency 16-21. ). Trawls duration and speed were 10 minutes and 3 nm.h(-1)respectively. Samples were taken to estimate total and commercial (greater or equal than 55 mm total height)scallop weight and size frequency distribution. Coefficients of variation (CV)of the estimated biomass were calculated for each bed using geoestatistical techniques and a simple random sampling alternative with the same number of samples. The CVs for total scallop biomass as estimated in the three beds using geostatistical techniques were 50,8. , 20,5. and 5,6. lower than the respective CVs obtained using a simple random design-based alternative. In the case of commercial scallop biomass, the reduction in the CVs was 51,4. , 20,5. and 5,6. , respectively. An important decrease in the associated uncertainty in biomass estimation of the three beds was found using a geoestatistical approach instead of the randomized sampling alternative. Given the spatial distribution and sedentary characteristic of Z. patagonica, once detected, grounds are particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Thus, reliable biomass estimates and precise maps of commercial and non commercial individual densities are useful tools to define sustainable management strategies.

Description: The fishing of the mussel (Mytilus edulis platensis)off the Buenos Aires coast was alternatively carried out over two main grounds: "Faro Querandí" and "Quequén". The fluctuations of fishing periods on these grounds must have been determined by economic considerations. An abandoned bed may be considere, for practical purposes, depleted. The understanding of the dynamics of this spatially distributed stock could enable us to link more closely the biological cycles with those of the fishing activity. Rotative fishing is suggested as a managment strategy for this fishery.

Description: The faunistic composition of invertebrate by-catch associated with the Patagonian scallop Zygochlamys patagonica fishery before its development were studied. Analyzed material was sampled from catches performed in different beds with the F/V Erin Bruce during 1995, all of them in undisturbed areas, in the Argentine continental shelf. Macrofaunal species were identified, weighted and percentages of presence estimated. By-catch invertebrate species were determined for every bed, mainly invertebrates without present commercial value. This baseline information is considered a useful tool to detect structural changes in the benthic communities in relation to the conservation of possible substrates of recruitment of this resource and to estimate the evolution of the communities during the development of the fishery.

Description: The faunistic characteristics in feeding grounds of Micropogonias furnieri, considering many relationships with the diet of the species in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, are studied. Benthos was collected in 33 sampling stations during the reseach cruise H-13/94, between 9-44 meters depth in the area El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina), with hard bottom and Picard dredges. Cluster analysis (Q mode, Sorensen index) was applied to these data and to the invertebrate by-catch obtained in 58 demersal hauls. Frequency size distribution of mussels in its distribution area is also presented. Stomach contents of 177 specimens of white croaker were studied from the percentage of ocurrence frequence of every alimentary item. Present results and previous information from the area of Río de la Plata suggest that traditional fishing areas of white croaker in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone constitute feeding grounds for this commercial resource.
