Description / Table of Contents:
Sulphite cooks were carried out on decayed beech wood (Fagus silvatica) which had been attacked by Polyporus igniarius. It was shown that the cell wall-lumen boundary was coated by an UV absorbing substance due to the white rot. This substance was not further investigated, but is possibly of a tannin character. In some cases the lumen was completely filled. During the sulphite cooking of this decayed wood the lumen became filled with solid, UV absorbing material. It is possible that the original, unknown substance in the lumen causes condensation of the dissolved lignin. The normal circulation of the cooking liquor is therefore to a large extent hindered by this phenomenon. These two facts contribute to an abnormal digestion of the wood, giving rise to greater degradation of the cellulose in the fiber than that occuring under normal conditions. Thus, if the wood is more or less decayed the digestion will be nonuniform, causing a deterioration in both paper and rayon pulp quality.
Notes:
