    Notes: Abstract ISOCAM observations of Cassiopeia A (Cas A), the youngest supernova remnant known in our galaxy, are discussed. We show how these observations are of interest for the so-called Cas A Neon problem and how these observations have renewed the interest in supernovae as dust factories.

    Notes: Abstract Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) was observed with camiras, the Saclay mid-infrared camera, mounted on the Nordic Optical Telescope (Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma), from April 14th to April 25th, 1997. This observing run was part of the European campaign devoted to Hale-Bopp observations from the Canary Islands (PI R. West). camiras spectro-imaging capabilities, achieved with a Circular Variable Filter (of spectral resolution R ≈ 50), were used to obtain spectra of the comet in the N atmospheric window (8–13 μm) over a large field of view (52″ × 78″), at a spatial resolution of ∼1 arcsec. Data were also collected at shorter wavelengths (in the L and M bands). The silicate dust feature around 10 μm is clearly apparent in the data. The shape of the feature varies continuously according to the position in the field. A dust model developed at Saclay in the framework of β-Pictoris dust disk studies was used to interpret the observations. The presence of both olivine and pyroxene with a high degree of crystallinity is needed to account for the observations. A change in the size distribution of the grains allows to reproduce the spatial change of the silicate feature according to the position in the field.

    Notes: Abstract We have used the ESO 10 μm camera, TIMMI, to image with a very high angular resolution (PFoV: 0.3″; FWHM:0.9″) several main-sequence star disk candidates. Information on the β-Pictoris dust disk has been obtained in a region largely inaccessible to previous observations: 0–80 AU, with a resolution of about 5 AU after deconvolution. Another promising target for 10 μm imaging, 51 Ophiuchi, appears point-like.

    Notes: Abstract We present the first results of a survey of Blue Compact Galaxies with a 10 μm array. Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs) are dwarf galaxies experiencing an intense burst of star formation. As dwarf systems, their main characteristics is a low heavy-elements abundance. Although dust is thought to be less abundant in these galaxies than in normal spirals, the presence of a compact starburst region favors a detection in the infrared, and 10 μm imaging is perfectly suited to star formation studies in BCGs since it focuses on the hottest dust inside the star-forming regions.

    Notes: Abstract Since 1984, the CEA-LETI-LIR (Infrared Laboratory) has been involved in development of Si:Ga/DRO hybrid detector arrays dedicated to imaging of astronomical sources in the 8–13 μm range. Successively, 32×32 element arrays were successfully manufactured for the ISOCAM camera and 64×64 arrays were fabricated for ground-based imaging. The latter detectors have been integrated in 3 cameras (C10μ, CAMIRAS and TIMMI for ESO) and have led to excellent astrophysical results since 1990. To equip instruments to be mounted on very large telescopes such as the European VLT at ESO, manufacture of new arrays has been undertaken and is currently under way at CEA-LETI-LIR. These new arrays will have a 128×192 format and will present the outstanding essential feature that their storage capacity will be able to be changed according to observation conditions (2 capacities will be implemented in the pixel). The main characteristics of these new detectors will be presented in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract The region around the Herbig Ae/Be star LkHα198 was imaged at 10μm with the CAMIRAS camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope. We discovered a deeply embedded companion 6″ north of LkHα198, which may be responsible for most of the far-infrared emission in the region and for driving the molecular flow. LkHα198 appears point-like at our resolution (FWHM ∼ 1.3″), excluding an extended envelope of transiently heated small grains as the dominant origin of the mid-infrared excess in that star.
