    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Published records of the foraminiferal genus Seabrookia indicate the genus to be widespread and its occurrence apparently discontinuous. The genus is here reported for the first time as a fossil from the eastern Pacific Ocean region, with the description of the new species S. cooperta from the California Miocene.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. The foraminiferan Glabratella ornatissima (Cushman) undergoes plastogamy during reproduction. In this process, 2 (or rarely more) individuals join together by their apertural sides to mutually exchange gametes. The apertural sides and internal septa are dissolved, forming a single large brood chamber. After the zygotes grow to a 2- or 3-chambered stage, the young foraminifera are liberated from the enclosing parent tests.Scanning electron micrographs and histochemically stained thin sections indicate that the reproductively mature individuals are firmly united by an organic membrane during plastogamy. This membrane is monolamellar, less than 1 μ thick and has minute lumps on its surface. Biochemically it contains a nonsulfated acid mucopolysaccharide, which is unlike the membranes associated with CaCO3 deposition lining the interior of foraminiferal tests. The young foraminifera liberate themselves by secretion of an enzyme which degrades the membrane. The mechanism of plastogamy is interpreted to be an adaptation to life in turbulent waters that would decrease the chance of gamete union or zygote survival were the gametes released and fertilized freely.

    Notes: Summary Sea-ice microflora was collected from December 1971 to November 1972 from a variety of types of sea ice in the vicinity of Arthur Harbor, Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Sixty-seven identifiable species of diatoms, one silicoflagellate and several archaeomonads were recoverd from the ice. Of these, only 24 diatoms and the archaeomonads were considered to be truly cryophilic based on their occurrence and abundance. Qmode factor analysis revealed that four factors (species occurrences) account for 89% of the data. In a general way, these four factors are related to ice type-shore ice protected from turbulence, grounded pack ice, slush ice and sea ice. Shannon-Wiener species diversity functions range from 0.000 (monospecific) to 3.0515 (dominance divided among 9 species). Diversity also appeared to be related to ice type-protected shore ice was low, sea ice was intermediate, and grounded pack, exposed shore ice and slush were higherst. Short-term varibility in physical/biotic environment may control species diversity. Sea-ice assemblages may be useful in paleoclimatic interpretations of past ice distributions.

    Description: Shelled granuloreticulose microorganisms have had a complex etymological history that began in 1826 when d'Orbigny gave his new order the name Foraminiferes and characterized the group. Soon afterwards, further examination and proper Latinization established them as class Foraminifera. D'Orbigny should be credited with the suprafamilial group name, regardless of rank, because he provided defining characteristics, and also because higher taxa are not governed by ICZN rules; in addition, we should consider the history of its attribution and what is traditional and customary in zoological nomenclature. The name Foraminifera is the source of a variety of informal terms, including foraminifera, foraminifer, foraminiferan, and for-am. Long after being demoted to order, the Latinized name was modified to Foraminiferida in 1964 by Loeblich and Tappan, the informal foraminiferid was introduced later. Here, we briefly examine these terms as sets of singular and plural nouns, and their derived adjectives and nouns that begin with foram-. Authors can choose any of the derived terms, but they should be consistent by using only one term-set throughout their paper. Other nouns derived from foraminifer-, such as foraminiferologist for a student of the group, are not usually part of a term-set. The informal term foram is a valid derivation and it is the most common of the names used in conversation among earth scientists and biologists. It is already accepted in major dictionaries and literature, and it has been used in specific word pairs found in scientific publications. In addition, foram eases communication by its multilingual applicability; it is also the easiest of the terms to pronounce, write, and read. For all these reasons, its use may increase in scientific literature.
