    Description: Profiles of Mo/total organic carbon (TOC) through the Lower Toarcian black shales of the Cleveland Basin, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and the Posidonia shale of Germany and Switzerland reveal water mass restriction during the interval from late tenuicostatum Zone times to early bifrons Zone times, times which include that of the putative Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event. The degree of restriction is revealed by crossplots of Mo and TOC concentrations for the Cleveland Basin, which define two linear arrays with regression slopes (ppm/%) of 0.5 and 17. The slope of 0.5 applies to sediment from the upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzones. This value, which is one tenth of that for modern sediments from the Black Sea (Mo/TOC regression slope 4.5), reveals that water mass restriction during this interval was around 10 times more severe than in the modern Black Sea; the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 4 and 40 ka. The Mo/TOC regression slope of 17 applies to the overlying falciferum and commune subzones: the value shows that restriction in this interval was less severe and that the renewal frequency of the water mass was between 10 and 130 years. The more restricted of the two intervals has been termed the Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event but is shown to be an event caused by basin restriction local to NW Europe. Crossplots of Re, Os, and Mo against TOC show similar trends of increasing element concentration with increase in TOC but with differing slopes. Together with modeling of 187Os/188Os and d98Mo, the element/TOC trends show that drawdown of Re, Os, and Mo was essentially complete during upper semicelatum and exaratum Subzone times (Mo/TOC regression slope of 0.5). Drawdown sensitized the restricted water mass to isotopic change forced by freshwater mixing so that continental inputs of Re, Os, and Mo, via a low-salinity surface layer, created isotopic excursions of up to 1.3 per mil in d98Mo and up to 0.6 per mil for 187Os/188Os. Restriction thereby compromises attempts to date Toarcian black shales, and possibly all black shales, using Re-Os chronology and introduces a confounding influence in the attempts to use d98Mo and initial 187Os/188Os for palaeo-oceanographic interpretation.

    Description: Five ferromanganese crusts and 6 ferromanganese nodules samples collected by the Joint Chinese-West Germany Geophysical Investigation Team in May—June, 1987 during the SO49 cruise of the R/V Sonne. They were analyzed for their rare earth element contents by means of X-Ray fluorescent spectrometry. On the basis of study of 15 rare earth elements detected, the relationship among rare earth element concentration, source,, as well as distribution pattern and associated elements was discussed in detail. Results show that 1) The average concentration of rare earth elements in South China Sea ferromanganese crusts and nodules was 1. 625 g/kg and 2. 167 g/kg respectively. This concentration is 1—2 times higher than that in Pacific ferromanganese nodules, 5—6 times higher than that found in North Pacific sediments, and 10—20 times higher than that found in South China Sea sediments. 2) Distribution pattern of rare earth elements in ferromanganese nodules and crusts are basically the same. Ce is positively abnormal and Eu deficit is not obvious. Results of comparative study of associated elements, sediments, and rare earth elements of rocks show that rare earth elements in ferromanganese nodules and crusts were deposited mainly in South China Sea medium-acidic rocks after they had undergone weathering and wetting.

    Description: The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb−1 for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F0), left-handed (FL), or right-handed (FR) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F0 = 0.693 ± 0.014 and FL = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction FR is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be FR = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F0 (FL) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (VR), and left- and right-handed tensor (gL, gR) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for VR, [−0.08, 0.05] for gL, and [−0.04, 0.02] for gR, at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.

    Description: This paper presents combinations of inclusive and differential measurements of the charge asymmetry (A C) in top quark pair $$ left(mathrm{t}overline{mathrm{t}} ight) $$ t t ¯ events with a lepton+jets signature by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of about 5 and 20 fb−1 for each experiment, respectively. The resulting combined LHC measurements of the inclusive charge asymmetry are A C CHC7  = 0.005 ± 0.007 (stat) ± 0.006(syst) at 7 TeV and A C CHC8  = 0.0055 ± 0.0023 (stat) ± 0.0025 (syst) at 8 TeV. These values, as well as the combination of A C measurements as a function of the invariant mass of the $$ mathrm{t}overline{mathrm{t}} $$ t t ¯ system at 8 TeV, are consistent with the respective standard model predictions.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of Dy2Fe17 and Dy2Fe17C have been reported. The expansion of the lattice and increase of Curie temperature Tc and magnetization M have been found for Dy2Fe17C, and compared with Dy2Fe17. From the study of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra, we found that the average hyperfine field of Dy2Fe17C is about 5 T larger than that of Dy2Fe17. The isomer shift of the 4f site is smaller for Dy2Fe17C compared with Dy2Fe17.

    Notes: NdFeB is an important class of new magnetic materials, however corrosion resistance is a serious concern and literature on the electrochemical behavior of NdFeB is scarce. This paper reports the results of an electrochemical investigation of the corrosion behavior of sintered NdFeB magnets obtained from three manufacturers. Linear polarization (cyclic voltammetry) experiments were conducted in aqueous solutions ranging in pH from 0.7 to 13.5. A limited degree of passivation was observed in all solutions which is believed to be due to the formation of a complex Fe-Nd oxide and/or hydroxide film. The presence of a small amount of chloride ion, 10 to 100 ppm, shows only a slight effect, but higher concentrations (1000 ppm) cause a total breakdown in passivity and a dramatic increase in anodic current. The cathodic potential sweep shows an abrupt and unusual oxidation process, giving rise to an oxidation peak not commonly seen. This peak may result from dissolution of the film or preferential attack of intergranular phases.

    Notes: Experimental results show that the exchange coupling field (Hex) of NiFe/FeMn for Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Ta multilayers is higher than that for spin-valve multilayers Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta. In order to find out the reason, the composition and chemical states at the surface of Ta(12 nm)/NiFe(7 nm), Ta(12 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/Cu(4 nm), and Ta(12 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/Cu(3 nm)/NiFe(5 nm) were studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that no elements from lower layers float out or segregate to the surface in the first and second samples. However, Cu atoms segregate to the surface of Ta(12 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/Cu(3 nm)/NiFe(5 nm) multilayers, i.e., Cu atoms segregate to the NiFe/FeMn interface for Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta multilayers. We believe that the presence of Cu atoms at the interface of NiFe/FeMn is one of the important factors which causes the exchange coupling field (Hex) of Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta to be weaker than that of Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Ta. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Several versions of Mevva ion sources have been developed in our institute since 1988. It operates in a pulsed mode with a pulse length of 1.2 ms and a repetition rate of up to 50 pps. A time-averaged beam current of 10 or 50 mA has been extracted at 30–80 kV from Mevva IIA-H and Mevva IIB, respectively. In order to develop surface modification of materials by ion implantation we have constructed three kinds of Mevva ion source implantation systems. High dose (3–5×1017 cm−2) implantation with Ti, Ce, Y, and Ti+C, etc. has been carried out for improving the lifetime of metal cutting tools, relay contacts, dies, and some sophisticated components.

    Notes: A novel giant magnetoresistance memory effect has been observed in epitaxial Nd0.7Sr0.3MnOz thin films which have previously been found to exhibit a linear increase in conductivity on first application of a magnetic field (B). Here we reported that the conductivity of the films depends not only on the applied field but also on the magnetic history. At T well below the temperature Tp where the zero-field resistivity has a peak, the film enters a high conductivity state [(ΔR/RB)(approximately-greater-than)103] upon application of a magnetic field which persists even when B is reduced to zero. The original "zero'' field state is not recovered until the sample is warmed to T∼Tp. Surprisingly, the dc magnetization exhibits only a weak irreversibility while the magnetoconductivity is markedly hysteretic. That is, while the remanent magnetization is small the remanent magnetic resistivity is 10−3 times the initial zero-field-cooled resistivity. A possible explanation based on a two-component model of semiconducting matrix with embedded shunting paths of ferromagnetic material will be presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
