    Notes: Abstract Equations are developed to describe the energy expenditure of the human heart. As well as the external potential and kinetic energy terms, general consideration is given to other possible avenues of energy consumption. Emphasis is placed upon using mathematical variables which are readily available for experimental verification. The errors involved in assuming that mean values for the physiological parameters give reasonable estimations for the external mechanical performance are examined, and a theoretical estimation for the discrepancy in the kinetic component is presented. Logical extension of the mathematical derivation leads to a determination of cardiac external mechanical efficiency and clearly demonstrates the significance of the ventricular pressure-volume loop in this context. Finally, experimental procedures are suggested to clarify further some of the conclusions reached through the theoretical analysis.

    Notes: Abstract In some instances the same electrodes are used for stimulation and then for recording a bioelectric event immediately after the stimulus. However, after the current pulse there remains an electrode potential that decays quasiexponentially. We have designated this falling potential the electrode-recovery potential. This study investigated the recovery potentials of single electrodes of rhodium, stainless steel, platinum and platinum-iridium in contact with 0.9% saline at room temperature (25°C) over a current density ranging from 0.1 to 100 mA/cm2 using a constant-current pulse. In all cases, with increasing current density, there was a decrease in the time for the electrode potential to fall to one half of the immediate post-stimulus value. Above about 20 mA/cm2 the decrease in recovery time was smooth with increasing current density. Below 20 mA/cm2, the recovery time was slightly irregular. The shortest recovery times were for platinum and platinum-iridium. The largest decrease in recovery time with increasing current density was for stainless steel, which decreased 10 fold from 0.1 to 100 mA/cm2. The recovery time for rhodium decreased about three-and-one half fold over the same current density range. It was found that the waveform of the recovery potential is not a simple exponential because the Warburg and Faradic components of the electrode-electrolyte interface are current-density dependent. In general, for all current densities studied (0.1–100 mA/cm2), there was a sudden initial fall in electrode potential with cessation of current flow, followed by a very gradual nonexponential decrease in potential.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic (eddy-current) stimulation of the inspiratory motor nerves in the neck of the anesthetized dog was achieved. Using a 10-turn coil wound around the base of the neck and a train of pulses (25/s), inspiration was produced by tetanic contraction of the inspiratory muscles. The volume of air inspired increased with an increase in the voltage applied to the capacitor that was discharged repetitively into the coil. In this 10-dog study, the maximum inspired volume was in excess of the spontaneous tidal volume. In a second study, breathing was captured by repeating the stimulus trains at a rate in excess of the spontaneous breathing rate. Oxygen consumption was measured during spontaneous breathing and with captured breathing. The oxygen uptake with magnetic electroventilation was, on the average, 75% higher than with spontaneous breathing. However body temperature did not increase. Although the neck coil was not critical in placement, its field of stimulation was larger than needed to stimulate the phrenic and accessory motor nerves.

    Notes: Abstract The submucosal connective tissue of the jejunum has been shown to be suitable for use as a vascular graft in preliminary dog studies. To partially characterize the mechanical properties of this new graft material, longitudinal stress (σ)-strain (ε)-data were obtained on 13 specimens of canine jejunum, stripped of its mucosal and external smooth-muscle layers. The ratio of stress to strain is the modulus of elasticity (E). It was found that the stress σ-strain ε-data fitted the expressionγ=K∈ α very well. For a typical specimenγ=2.69×106∈2.33. The modulus of elasticity (E=γ 1-1/α K 1/α) was found to increase with increasing stress, ranging from about 2,000 to 9,000 mmHg. For the average specimenE=573γ 0.57, where σ is in mmHg, (1 mmHg=133.3 Pascals).

    Notes: Abstract Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measuredin situ in 11 isolated canine common carotid arteries. Seven arteries exhibited a linear PWV/pressure function at pressures ranging from 0 to 200 mm Hg. Four arteries yielded a linear relationship between PWV and pressure between 1 and 100 mm Hg; for these vessels the relationship was nonlinear at higher pressures. Seven arteries (five from the group which was linear up to 200 mm Hg and two from the group which was linear up to 100 mm Hg) were excised and presure/volume measurements were madein vivo. Using pressure/volume data, the Moens-Korteweg equation was evaluated as a predictor of the PWV/pressure relationship over the linear region. An expression was developed to anable prediction of the pressure/volume relationship using the coefficients at the linear PWV/pressure function; these predictions were evaluated. We found that, for this range, the Moens-Korteweg equation provides a very good basis for predicting the increase in PWV with increasing bias pressure. In addition, we found that the pressure/volume relationship of common carotid arteries is well represented by an exponential of the form V/Vo=Keαf(P), which was derived as the inverse solution to the Moens-Korteweg equation.
