    Notes: This paper deals with developing new heuristic ordering rules for managing multi-item, single vendor inventory systems with random demands. The inventory position for each item is continuously reviewed, and an order is placed when the projected stockout cost for all items exceeds a certain multiple of the average ordering cost. Rules are offered for determining which items to include in the order, and also for determining order-up-to level for each item. These rules involve two parameters, whose optimal values are estimated by simulation. Such systems are encountered in many real life situations, such as independent convenience stores, mom and pop grocery stores, ethnic grocery stores, neighborhood hardware stores, small independent retailers and family pharmacies. Many of these systems are grossly mismanaged from an inventory point of view. Ordering rules developed in this paper are the back-bone of a proposed inventory and order management software required to support such small business operations.

    Notes: The concept of taxonomy is applied to inventory management in a supply-chain using the example of the US textile industry. Through classification and standardisation of issues related to inventory management problems, it is shown how inventory models and techniques can be generalised across diverse application environments represented by autonomous business entities that form the supply-chain. Three generic models that implement inventory decision rules to address constant (or level), time varying (or chase), and mixed demand patterns associated with stock keeping unit (SKU) categories are proposed. Applications of these inventory models to a textile supply-chain are discussed.

    Notes: Global competition has pushed firms to improve and upgrade their manufacturing operations continuously. Explores the role of knowledge base and learning to facilitate this phenomenon. Developing a knowledge base requires organising knowledge and expertise for a field of inquiry and making it available in formats suitable for users to support and aid various operational, developmental, and organisational functions. Classification and coding form the basis for organising knowledge bases. Classification implies grouping objects into similar classes on the basis of some similarity criteria pertinent to one or more attributes. Learning in the context of classification implies discovering new attributes, bases for grouping and requires frequent updating of the knowledge base. A formal knowledge base makes a firm's knowledge cumulative and serves an important integrating and coordinating role for the organisation. Presents an example application utilizing classification as a tool for knowledge acquisition in design support activities.

    Notes: In manufacturing, corporate growth and profitability are more challenging than ever before. The company reviewed in this study has been and is currently suffering tremendous growing pains with poor record of profitability. This paper reports learning and application of a few significant techniques to improve basic business practices in a company, which manufactures large volume, high quality optical thin film coatings. Some of the tasks involved in identifying opportunities for improving operational efficiencies included analysis of current business processes, identification of non-value-added activities including wastes and proposing process changes. Process mapping and kaizen "blitz" activities were utilized during analysis of key business processes within this company. The study demonstrates measurable results realized through use of process mapping tools, kaizen blitz activities, formalized and documented work instructions and work measurement tools. To ultimately be successful, a company must educate their workforce and create a fulfilling work environment for each of their employees. Worker involvement is essential and critical in today's society. Gaining the worker's trust and commitment is extremely important.

    Notes: The past decade has witnessed dramatic changes in the types and composition of the workforce. A greater number of employees are able to work from home. Job seekers have better access to available jobs today than ever before. Likewise, employers have greater access to available potential candidates. In this context, a variety of approaches including intelligent agents to facilitate the search for employment are reviewed. The impact of the Internet on human resources management from employees' and employers' perspectives and resulting trends are analyzed. Based on the author's industry interactions and statistics, answers are sought to many pertinent questions relating to quality human resource initiatives to link with a technologically adept workforce. A human capital supply chain management framework is proposed which has decision-support capability in an Internet environment that provides value-based relationships between partners.

    Notes: Describes research to identify and pilot an improved planning and fulfilment process at Noramco, a manufacturing division of General Pump. The focus was to develop a synchronized system from source to consumption with continuous flow of information and materials for one of Noramco's main product lines. System-wide changes were accomplished using a cross-functional team with the goal of reducing waste and investment in inventory. Traditional measures of manufacturing efficiency and utilization were compared with proposed measurements of through-put (T), investment in inventory (I), and operating expense (OE). Although traditional measures showed actual decline, proposed measures showed improvement and increased profitability of 200 per cent for this product line. These new performance measures reflected a change from local to global thinking. Improved capacity management in the system was achieved by sharing information between suppliers and customers.

    Notes: One of the common problems encountered in managing a supply chain is that of synchronisation of activities throughout the life cycle of its products. Among several initiatives in the US textiles industry to deal with the problem, one in particular aims to achieve quick response (QR) in the supply chain through accurate response (AR). AR is an approach to forecasting, planning, and production that builds on QR capabilities within the supply chain organisation. In order to achieve this, a total systems perspective is necessary requiring analysis of activities. This paper describes a formal system analysis methodology utilising design principles that builds on activities, and utilises models that achieve synchronisation through waste management in inventory for a textile garment supply chain. The generic features of this activity-based problem representation methodology hold promise for its common application across supplier/consumer class of system problems.
