Notes: Summary Nonlinear excitations cause angular vibrations in torsional strings. In long strings, the vibrations are characterized by different dynamic behavior over the length. For a general case of a long torsional string, a simplified mathematical model is introduced and numerically simulated. In order to gain insight into the complex spatio-temporal dynamics, the method of proper orthogonal decomposition is applied. A short description of this powerful technique for continuous as well as discrete systems follows. By proper orthogonal decomposition, the dynamic response is projected on a subset of the state space in which the most dominant dynamic effects take place. The time-invariant eigenfunctions represent the most persistent structures in the system. By this method the eigenfunctions of long torsional strings are investigated. The reduction of the system's dimension as well as the approximation of the system state is presented.

Notes: Summary We present a method of computing a series of sets that approximates the basin of attraction for a given solution of a nonlinear dynamic system. The construction technique uses the general cell-mapping method in conjunction with an adaptive subdivision of the initial cell space. Our method provides a series of sets that contains the basin of attraction. Thus, we can approximate the robustness of a given solution from below.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the nonlinear, postcritical behavior of parametrically excited, shallow, cylindrical panels, which are modeled with two or four degrees of freedom. The analysis shows complicated dynamic behavior. Stable, periodic motions coexist with the trivial solution for very small values of the excitation amplitude. Moreover, a stable, chaotic attractor could be found coexisting with the trivial solution.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An exact simulation of vehicle vibrations can only be done with three-dimensional models. In this paper four vehicle models of different complexity and excited stochastically by means of an appropriate modelled three-dimensional roadway are investigated. It is shown, how variations in modelling produce difference in ride comfort and ride safety criteria.

Notes: Summary Chaotic motions in deterministic nonlinear systems are an important topic both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. In particular, there have been many studies of systems which yield bounded nonperiodic trajectories converging to attractors of a rather complicated nature, so-called strange attractors. Their existence was demonstrated in a class of nonlinear oscillators with periodic forcing which occur in electric circuit theory and mechanics. The determination of the domain of attraction of such attractors, depending on the parameters, is an interesting problem. It is shown, that the cell mapping approach, i.e., a discrete version of a Poincaré map, represents a very efficient method for analyzing this problem.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The dynamical investigation of multibody systems consisting of rigid bodies, springs, dashpots, servomotors and bearings based on algebraic equations of motion results in shorter computation time and higher accuracy compared with investigations based on numerical formalisms. It is shown that the algebraic equations of motion of large systems can be clearly found by computer aid. For this purpose d'Alembert's principle is applied to the Newton-Euler equations of the considered multibody system. The extensive matrix operations are performed algebraically on the digital computer using index coding. Finally the equations of motion of ordinary multibody systems are presented by one nonlinear or linearized vector differential equation of second order.

Notes: Abstract We study parametrically excited vibrations of a shallow cylindrical panel. The mathematical model is a system of two partial differential equations based on Donnell's shallow shell theory. The original equations are discretised using Galerkin approximations and all calculations are performed through symbolic manipulations. A bifurcation analysis of a system model with two degrees of freedom is accomplished by continuation techniques. The importance of the second degree of freedom as well as some open questions concerning the modelling of shell vibrations are discussed.
