Notes:
Mechanically modulated waveguide spectroscopy is a technique for measuring simultaneously the thickness modulation and changes in orientation of surface stabilized liquid crystalline cells. The possibilities of this technique are presented for cells filled with a ferroelectric liquid crystal. Constant thickness modulation of 20 nm is achieved in the liquid crystal at 50 °C over a frequency range from 1 to 105 Hz. The technique is useful for studying the piezoelectric reorientation processes in liquid crystals. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
