Notes:
In a recent paper, the free energy difference per particle between fcc and hcp hard-sphere solids was calculated. This difference turned out to be very small in the thermodynamic limit so that no decision could be made as to which of the two phases is the stable one. This result is in apparent contradiction to another paper where it was claimed that the fcc solid is the stable one. Detailed inspection of the two papers shows, however, that the discrepancy can be removed.
