Abstract When searching lists, the current situation is represented by a state table, and changes in the situation are brought about by operators. An automated technique for selection of the right sequence of operators is described, based on a knowledge of the last operator or two, and deriving only a limited selection of subsequent operators, without prior knowledge of the current state. A table is output with, for each feasible sequence of one or two operators, a list of operators that might be tried next. Application of the technique to a robot moving blocks is described, and a LISP implementation is provided.
