Abstract A model is developed for estimation of the AM and FM noise of a waveguide oscillator with paired diodes in the same plane. The dependence of AM and FM noise on the Q, power, and mutual-synchronization phase of the active elements is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effect of the location and number of diodes on the output characteristics of the oscillator is analyzed. It is shown that minimal misalignment of mutually synchronized diode oscillators corresponds to a minimal level of AM noise that is lower than in the case of a single-diode oscillator.
