Notes: Abstract Attaching an inert mass to a freely moving tibia of an otherwise fixed stick insect Carausius morosus, induces undamped oscillations of the tibia. We describe the use of a rotational pendulum to observe these oscillations applying various amounts of inertia. The dependence of the frequency of these oscillations on the moment of inertia is similar to that of a purely mechanical system. The sequence of the oscillatory behavior can be separated into 3 distinct behavioural states. The transitions between some of these states could be elicited by external stimuli and partly showed characteristics of habituation and dishabituation. With a rotational pendulum on each middle leg, simultaneous oscillations of both legs were measured to investigate coupling effects between the neural control systems of the two legs. In some cases, significant coupling effects could be observed in phase and frequency. In many other cases, no coupling was found. The habituation and dishabituation effects were not transferred between the middle legs.

Notes: Abstract Depending on the activity status of the animal, the control system of the femur-tibia joint in stick insects exhibits either a resistance reflex, or the “active reaction”, a totally different action pattern (Bässler 1988a). Using analog electronic neuron models, several different neuronal circuits are explored that model the active reaction with all its features. The models differ in complexity, redundance and the robustness against small variations of network parameters (e.g. coupling strengths). The circuit with the highest robustness and redundancy requires interneurons with special features, such as found in real animals. When inserted into a closed loop modeling movement and sensory feedback from the periphery, this circuit produces oscillations similar to searching movements found in the real animal. In addition to intracellular recording methods, the authors propose modeling with realistic neuromimes as a complementary method in the investigation of neuronal networks which have well documented input-output relationships.

Notes: Abstract Certain small networks of spiking interneurons are shown to produce strong fluctuations when modeled with neuromimes. The reasons for these fluctuations are demonstrated and discussed. When one or more of the neuromimes in the circuit were replaced by non-spiking neuromimes, the fluctuations were strongly reduced or disappeared completely. We assume that one of the important functions of nonspiking neurons is to provide precise analog computation while avoiding fluctuation.

Notes: Abstract An analog electronic neuron for modeling neuronal networks and for teaching purposes is presented. The circuitry represents a new approach, since ionic channels are all modeled by fast relay switches in combination with resistors. Thus, the synapse design includes nonlinear PSP superposition and reversal potentials. The spike is modeled with Na+ and K+ currents. Detailed circuit diagrams and examples of performance are given. Besides its use in network research, the model has been successfully used over 3 years of teaching practice.

Notes: Summary 1. A preparation is described by which the wing hinge stretch receptor (SR) ofLocusta migratoria is mechanically isolated so that it can be subjected to stretch stimuli while avoiding interference with wing hinge mechanics. 2. Using this approach and sinusoidal stretches of different amplitudes the SR can be stimulated up to a definite saturation frequency. The discharge frequency at a given stretch and the saturation frequency both depend dramatically on ambient temperature. High instantaneous frequencies (up to 650 Hz, as found in flying locusts) were only obtained at a high temperature of 32 °C. 3. The instantaneous spike frequency of the SR in response to short stretches (within the time range of wing beat period) reflects exactly the amount of the stretch and not its rate of change. Thus, the SR is a receptor signalling the momentary position of the sclerites to which it is attached.

Notes: Abstract A pulsed polarized electron source using the Fano effect on cesium is described in detail. A frequency doubled dye laser producing 2 mJ/pulse at 305 nm is used as the source of circularly polarized light. The light beam interacts with an array of 20 atomic beams. The atomic beam oven operates in a closed cycle thereby increasing running time by a factor of 30. Intensities of 3×109 e −/0.5 μs with a polarization of 90% have been routinely obtained.
