    Notes: Abstract Electrons accelerated during solar flares are revealed by their electromagnetic radiation in different spectral ranges, emitted at different heights in the solar atmosphere. The observational analysis points to a common and continuous injection of particles. Based on this result, a quantitative investigation of the hard X-ray and microwave emissions observed during the 29 June, 1980 flare at 11: 40 UT has been performed. This is the first modelisation that takes into account both the inhomogeneity of the microwave source region and the dynamical evolution of the electron population. First results of our model computations demonstrate that during the most energetic phase of the event both hard X-rays and microwaves are described by electron populations resulting from the same injection function, and that the total numbers of electrons required for both emissions are compatible. Account for the inhomogeneity of the microwave source is shown to be a necessary condition for the interpretation of observed spectra.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral fine structure of solar radio continua is thought to reveal wave-particle and wave-wave interactions in magnetic traps in the solar corona. We present observations of spectra, polarization, and spatial characteristics of combined emission/extinction features (‘zebra patterns’) during a decimetric/metric type IV event on 5 June, 1990. Very high modulation depths are observed. The size and location of the sources during emission and extinction are determined for the first time. Two remarkable features are found: (1) The sources of emission stripes have finite size, up to nearly 2′; during extinction stripes the brightness is reduced across the whole extent of the unperturbed continuum, which is slightly larger than 2′. (2) During emission stripes the sources drift over distances up to several × 104 km, with apparent velocities up to 105 km s−1. The observed features are briefly discussed with respect to interpretations based on wave-particle interactions and on the scattering of electromagnetic waves.

    Notes: Abstract Radio noise storms show that suprathermal electrons (a few tens of keV) are present in the vicinity of active regions during several hours or even a few days. Where and how these electrons are energized is not yet well known. A flare-like sudden energy release in the active region is in general observed at the onset of noise storms, either as a fully developed flare or, more often, as a soft X-ray brightening without conspicuous Hα signature. In order to investigate to what extent electrons energized in the active region contribute to the noise-storm emission in the overlying coronal structures, we combine radio imaging (Nançay radioheliograph) with X-ray spectral observations at photon energies of a few keV (GOES) and - for the first time - around 10 keV (WATCH/GRANAT). In two of four studied events the WATCH data show a significant excess of the deka-keV count rate above the expectation from an isothermal fit to the GOES fluxes. Although the electron population producing the deka-keV X-ray emission would be energetic enough to power the simultaneous radio noise storm, the much longer duration of the radio emission requires time-extended particle acceleration. The acceleration probably occurs in the corona overlying the X-ray emitting region, triggered by the processes which give rise to the X-ray brightenings.

    Notes: Abstract A study of the onset phase often great hard X-ray bursts is presented. It is shown from hard X-ray and radio observations in different wavelength ranges that the energization of the electrons proceeds on a global time-scale of some tens of seconds. In nine of the bursts two phases of emission can be distinguished during the onset phase: the pre-flash phase, during which emission up to an energy limit ranging from some tens of keV to 200 keV is observed, followed ten to some tens of seconds later by the flash phase, where the count rate in all detector channels rises simultaneously to within some seconds. For two of the events strong γ-ray line emission is observed and is shown to start close to the onset of the flash phase.

    Notes: Abstract As it crossed the solar disk in May and June 1998, AR 8227 was tracked by TRACE, Yohkoh, SOHO, and many ground-based observatories. We have studied how the evolution of the magnetic field resulted in changes in activity in the corona. In particular, we examine how the evolving field may have led to the acceleration of electrons which emit noise storms observed by the Nançay Radio Heliograph between 30 May and 1 June 1998, in the absence of any flare. The magnetic changes were related to moving magnetic features (MMFs) in the vicinity of the leading spot and are related to the decay of this spot. Within the limits of the instrumental capabilities, the location in time and space of the radio emissions followed the changes observed in the photospheric magnetograms. We have extrapolated the photospheric magnetic field with a linear force-free approximation and find that the active region magnetic field was very close to being potential. These computations show a complex magnetic topology associated to the MMFs. The observed photospheric evolution is expected to drive magnetic reconnection in such complex magnetic topology. We therefore propose that the MMFs are at the origin of the observed metric noise-storms.
