    Notes: Abstract The integration of heterogeneous database environments is a difficult and complex task. The A la carte Framework addresses this complexity by providing a reusable and extensible architecture in which a set of heterogeneous database management systems can be integrated. The goal is to support incremental integration of existing database facilities into heterogeneous, interoperative, distributed systems. The Framework addresses the three main issues in heterogeneous systems in tegration. First, it identifies the problems in integrating heterogeneous systems. Second, it identifies the key interfaces and parameters required for autonomous systems to interoperate correctly. Third, it demonstrates an approach to integrating these interfaces in an extensible and incremental way. The A la carte Framework provides a set of reusable, integrating components which integrate the major functional domains, such as transaction management, that could or should be integrated in heterogeneous systems. It also provides a mechanism for capturing key characteristics of the components and constraints which describe how the components can be mixed and interchanged, thereby helping to reduce the complexity of the integration process. Using this framework, we have implemented an experimental, heterogeneous configuration as part of the object management work in the software engineering research consortium, Arcadia.

    Notes: Abstract Diatoms are identified and enumerated from the surface sediments of 100 lakes of Truelove Lowland, Devon Island, N.W.T., Canada. These lakes range from large oligotrophic lakes, to small tundra ponds, to coastal marine lagoons which are diverse in terms of ionic concentration and composition. The relationship between diatoms and 15 limnological variables is examined using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Specific conductivity is identified as the most important variable influencing the distribution of diatoms in the Truelove lakes. A Weighted Averaging (WA) calibration model is developed to predict diatom-inferred specific conductivity. The reliability of the model is tested by evaluating the correlation between observed and diatom-inferred values and determining the error of prediction by bootstrapping. The applicability of the predictive conductivity equation is demonstrated by reconstructing the paleoconductivity history of Fish Lake.

    Notes: Abstract In many large organizations there has been a proliferation of database systems to handle ever increasing volumes of information. In order to explore a potentially huge on-line information space, we must develop an architecture which allows for the dynamic data driven construction of inter-database node relationships in an incremental manner. In this paper we introduce the FINDIT architecture which uses informationmeta-types to provide a basis for such an organization and, consequently, provides a platform for interoperability. A distinction is made between theinformation andinter-node relationship spaces to achieve scalability. Tassili language primitives are used for the incremental building of dynamic inter-node relationships based upon usage considerations.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a framework for data integration that is based on using “Squirrel integration mediators” that use materialization to support integrated views over multiple databases. These mediators generalize techniques from active databases to provide incremental propagation of updates to the materialized views. A framework based on “View Decomposition Plans” for optimizing the support of materialized integrated views is introduced. The paper describes the Squirrel mediator generator currently under development, which can generate the mediators based on high-level specifications. The integration of information by Squirrel mediators is expressed primarily through an extended version of a standard query language, that can refer to data from multiple information sources. In addition to materializing an integrated view of data, these mediators can monitor conditions that span multiple sources. The Squirrel framework also provides efficient support for the problem of “object matching”, that is, determining when object representations (e.g., OIDs) in different databases correspond to the same object-in-the-world, even if a universal key is not available. To establish a context for the research, the paper presents a taxonomy that surveys a broad variety of approaches to supporting and maintaining integrated views.

    Notes: Progression from a steroid sensitive to insensitive state is characteristic of breast tumors, but little is known about the molecular mechanisms involved. Changes in steroid receptor can be associated with the progression. This paper reviews the cell culture data pertaining to loss of response and concludes that loss of receptor is a consequence rather than a cause of insensitivity. This view is based on evidence that loss of all response parameters occurs despite the presence of fully functional receptors as determined by transfection experiments. The postreceptor defect appears to be at the level of the hormone response element of the responsive genes arid may involve DNA methylation. The implications of the model for human breast cancer biology are discussed.

    Notes: When deprived of steroid in the long term, T-47-D human breast cancer cells lose estrogen sensitivity of cell growth. This loss of response results from an increased basal growth rate in the absence of steroid, not from a loss of estrogen-simulated growth, and it occurs without any loss of estrogen receptor number or function. Growth factor gene expression and sensitivity have been investigated in this model system in an attempt to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression to steroid autonomy. The transition was accompanied by a decreased dependence on added serum and by a loss of the stimulatory effects of insulin and basic fibroblast growth factor, but also by an acquired sensitivity to stimulation by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). An increase in TGF-β mRNA was detected following loss of steroid sensitivity. There was no increase in epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor number. These findings are discussed in relation to current knowledge concerning the mechanisms by which estrogens stimulate breast cancer cell proliferation.
