Description: Dinoflagellate cysts are useful for reconstructing upper water conditions. For adequate reconstructions detailed information is required about the relationship between modern day environmental conditions and the geographic distribution of cysts in sediments. This Atlas summarises the modern global distribution of 71 organicwalled dinoflagellate cyst species. The synthesis is based on the integration of literature sources together with data of 2405 globally distributed surface sediment samples that have been preparedwith a comparable methodology and taxonomy. The distribution patterns of individual cyst species are being comparedwith environmental factors that are knownto influence dinoflagellate growth, gamete production, encystment, excystment and preservation of their organic-walled cysts: surface water temperature, salinity, nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll-a concentrations and bottom water oxygen concentrations. Graphs are provided for every species depicting the relationship between seasonal and annual variations of these parameters and the relative abundance of the species. Results have been compared with previously published records; an overview of the ecological significance as well as information about the seasonal production of each individual species is presented. The relationship between the cyst distribution and variation in the aforementioned environmental parameters was analysed by performing a canonical correspondence analysis. All tested variables showed a positive relationship on the 99% confidence level. Sea-surface temperature represents the parameter corresponding to the largest amount of variance within the dataset (40%) followed by nitrate, salinity, phosphate and bottom-water oxygen concentration, which correspond to 34%, 33%, 25% and 24% of the variance, respectively. Characterisations of selected environments as well as a discussion about how these factors could have influenced the final cyst yield in sediments are included.

Description: Soybean (Glycine max) is a major crop cultivated in various regions and consumed globally. The formation of volatile compounds in soybeans is influenced by the cultivar as well as environmental factors, such as the climate and soil in the cultivation areas. This study used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) combined by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) to analyze the volatile compounds of soybeans cultivated in Korea, China, and North America. The multivariate data analysis of partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) were then applied to GC-MS data sets. The soybeans could be clearly discriminated according to their geographical origins on the PLS-DA score plot. In particular, 25 volatile compounds, including terpenes (limonene, myrcene), esters (ethyl hexanoate, butyl butanoate, butyl prop-2-enoate, butyl acetate, butyl propanoate), aldehydes (nonanal, heptanal, (E)-hex-2-enal, (E)-hept-2-enal, acetaldehyde) were main contributors to the discrimination of soybeans cultivated in China from those cultivated in other regions in the PLS-DA score plot. On the other hand, 15 volatile compounds, such as 2-ethylhexan-1-ol, 2,5-dimethylhexan-2-ol, octanal, and heptanal, were related to Korean soybeans located on the negative PLS 2 axis, whereas 12 volatile compounds, such as oct-1-en-3-ol, heptan-4-ol, butyl butanoate, and butyl acetate, were responsible for North American soybeans. However, the multivariate statistical analysis (PLS-DA) was not able to clearly distinguish soybeans cultivated in Korea, except for those from the Gyeonggi and Kyeongsangbuk provinces.

Description: High expression of glucose transporter family members, which augment glucose uptake and glycolytic flux, has been shown to play a pivotal role in the proliferation and survival of tumor cells, contributing to the energy supply, biosynthesis and homeostasis of cancer cells. Among the many members, solute carrier family 2 member 1 (SLC2A1) encodes a glucose transporter, GLUT1, that is critical in the metabolism of glucose, which is an energy source for cell growth that contributes to cancer progression and development. The aim of this study was to analyze the survival and genetic changes/immune profiles in patients with gastric cancer with high SLC2A1 expression and to provide treatment for improving prognosis. This study investigated the clinicopathologic parameters, the proportion of immune cells and gene sets affecting SLC2A1 expression in 279 and 415 patients with gastric cancer from the Eulji Hospital cohort and The Cancer Genome Atlas, respectively. We assessed the response to conventional chemotherapy drugs, including fluorouracil, a compound of fluoropyrimidine S-1, oxaliplatin, and all−trans−retinoic acid (ATRA), in gastric cancer cell lines with high SLC2A1 expression. High SLC2A1 expression was associated with poor prognosis, cancer cell proliferation, decreased immune cells, including CD8 T cells and B cells, and a low prognostic nutrition index, representing body nutrition-related status. In pathway network analysis, SLC2A1 was indirectly linked to the retinoic signaling pathway and negatively regulated immune cells/receptors. In the drug response analysis, the drug ATRA inhibited gastric cancer cell lines with high SLC2A1 expression. Treatment involving the use of SLC2A1 could contribute to better clinical management/research for patients with gastric cancer.

Notes: Nonlinear optical properties of a fixed molecular dimer, 2,2′-diamino-7,7′-dinitro9,9′-spirobifluorene (ANSF), have been investigated in solution by the degenerate four-wave mixing technique. It has been observed that the orientationally averaged second molecular hyperpolarizability of ANSF in THF is enhanced ten times in comparison with its monomer unit, 2-amino-7-nitrofluorene. Since electronic coupling between monomer units in ANSF is negligible owing to symmetry, we attribute the large enhancement to the orientational effect of the two constituting dipoles with possible involvement of vibronic coupling and spiroconjugation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Digital seismograms from a cluster of explosions at regional distances are analysed to investigate the similarity of seismograms with the aim of identifying possible multiple explosions. It is observed that the P wave trains from nearby explosions have considerable similarities, and the digital record of single explosions can thus be used in an empirical sense to characterize multiple explosions. By inversion and forward modelling of waveforms using the seismograms of nearby ‘single’ explosions as the pseudo-empirical Green's function, multiple explosions where the subevents occurred at nearly the same time can be clearly recognized. the resultant ‘event time functions’ correspond to a low-resolution picture of the multiplicity, which relies on both the true ground information about the nature of the pseudo-empirical Green's function and the resolution provided by the digital seismograms.

Notes: Ribosome-tethered chaperones that interact with nascent polypeptide chains have been identified in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. However, these ribosome-associated chaperones share no sequence similarity: bacterial trigger factors (TF) form an independent protein family while the yeast machinery is Hsp70-based. The absence of any component of the yeast machinery results in slow growth at low temperatures and sensitivity to aminoglycoside protein synthesis inhibitors. After establishing that yeast ribosomal protein Rpl25 is able to recruit TF to ribosomes when expressed in place of its Escherichia coli homologue L23, the ribosomal TF tether, we tested whether such divergent ribosome-associated chaperones are functionally interchangeable. E. coli TF was expressed in yeast cells that lacked the endogenous ribosome-bound machinery. TF associated with yeast ribosomes, cross-linked to yeast nascent polypeptides and partially complemented the aminoglycoside sensitivity, demonstrating that ribosome-associated chaperones from divergent organisms share common functions, despite their lack of sequence similarity.

Notes: Amorphous selenium (a-Se) film has the potential to fulfill the requirements of a novelx-ray image detector because of its good photo-to-dark impedance ratio, large area coverage, and lowtemperature deposition. In this work were studied the structural, optical and electrical properties ofthermally- evaporated a-Se film for the phosphor-light modulator (PLM). From the x-ray diffractionand electron microscopy experimental results, the deposited film had an amorphous phase withoutany re-crystallization or defects. Also, the light absorption in widely visible range of 400 ~ 630 nmwas over 95 %. From the electrical measurements, the low dark current density of 2.8 nA/cm2 wasobtained at 10 V/㎛. The x-ray sensitivity of the 270㎛-Gd2O3:Eu phosphor coupled 20㎛-Se filmwas 7.31 nC/cm2-mR. From such experimental results, the novel x-ray detector which incorporatesphosphor coupled x-ray light modulator, makes an operation at low x-ray exposure possible, therefore, the applications as a medical imaging detector are shown below

Notes: In this paper, we present the imaging parameters and compare both mercuric iodide (HgI2)and amorphous selenium (a-Se) films. Using MCNPX code, we designed the film structure and itsthickness for the optimized detector in the diagnostic x-ray range. The mercuric iodide film wasformed by a wet binder process, while the amorphous selenium film was deposited by physical vapordeposition (PVD). These deposition methods are capable of being scaled up to sizes required indiagnostic imaging applications. The electronic properties are investigated using dark current, x-raysensitivity and signal to noise ratio (SNR). From our results, the developed HgI2 film as an alternativeto a-Se photoconductor, which is in practical use in flat panel x-ray imaging detector, will prove itsusefulness in the future design and the optimization for various diagnostic modalities

Notes: Mechanical processing of nanocrystalline Y2O3 and transition alumina (AlOOH) wasperformed, using a Spex mixer mill under atmospheric conditions, to synthesize yttrium aluminumgarnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) powder at lower temperature. The reaction of nanocrystalline Y2O3 withAlOOH was activated by mechanical energy and use of fine instead of heat energy, leading to thedirect formation of pure YAG without second phases at a lower temperature, 800°C, which issignificantly lower than that required by the conventional solid-state reaction process
