    Description: Pressure vessels (PV) are designed to hold liquids, gases, or vapors at high pressures in various industries, but a ruptured pressure vessel can be incredibly dangerous if cracks are not detected in the early stage. This paper proposes a robust crack identification technique for pressure vessels using genetic algorithm (GA)-based feature selection and a deep neural network (DNN) in an acoustic emission (AE) examination. First, hybrid features are extracted from multiple AE sensors that represent diverse symptoms of pressure vessel faults. These features stem from various signal processing domains, such as the time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain. Heterogenous features from various channels ensure a robust feature extraction process but are high-dimensional, so may contain irrelevant and redundant features. This can cause a degraded classification performance. Therefore, we use GA with a new objective function to select the most discriminant features that are highly effective for the DNN classifier when identifying crack types. The potency of the proposed method (GA + DNN) is demonstrated using AE data obtained from a self-designed pressure vessel. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is highly effective at selecting discriminant features. These features are used as the input of the DNN classifier, achieving a 94.67% classification accuracy.

    Description: In this paper, an adaptive Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy sliding mode extended autoregressive exogenous input (ARX)–Laguerre proportional integral (PI) observer is proposed. The proposed T–S fuzzy sliding mode extended-state ARX–Laguerre PI observer adaptively improves the reliability, robustness, estimation accuracy, and convergence of fault detection, estimation, and identification. For fault-tolerant control in the presence of uncertainties and unknown conditions, an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode estimation technique is introduced. The sliding surface slope gain is significant to improve the system’s stability, but the sliding mode technique increases high-frequency oscillation (chattering), which reduces the precision of the fault diagnosis and tolerant control. A fuzzy procedure using a sliding surface and actual output position as inputs can adaptively tune the sliding surface slope gain of the sliding mode fault-tolerant control technique. The proposed robust adaptive T–S fuzzy sliding mode estimation extended-state ARX–Laguerre PI observer was verified with six degrees of freedom (DOF) programmable universal manipulation arm (PUMA) 560 robot manipulator, proving qualified efficiency in detecting, isolating, identifying, and tolerant control for faults inherent in sensors and actuators. Experimental results showed that the proposed technique improves the reliability of the fault detection, estimation, identification, and tolerant control.

Various time-frequency analysis approaches based on signal decomposition, such as empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble EMD (EEMD), have been widely utilized recently to analyze rub-impact faults. However, traditional EMD suffers from “mode-mixing”, and in both EMD and EEMD the relevance of the extracted components to rubbing processes must be determined. In this paper, we introduce a new informative intrinsic mode function (IMF) selection method for EEMD and a hybrid feature model for diagnosing rub-impact faults of various intensities. Our method uses a novel selection procedure that combines the degree-of-presence ratio of rub impact and a Kullback–Leibler divergence-based similarity measure into an IMF quality metric with adaptive threshold-based selection to pick the meaningful signal-dominant modes. Signals reconstructed using the selected IMFs contained explicit information about the rubbing faults and are used for hybrid feature extraction. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach effectively defines meaningful IMFs for rubbing processes, and the presented hybrid feature model allows for the classification of rub-impact faults of various intensities with good accuracy.

In this study, a reliable methodology for bearing fault detection is proposed, which is based on an optimal sub-band selection scheme using the discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) and envelope power analysis techniques. A DWPT-based decomposition is first performed to extract the characteristic defect features from the acquired acoustic emission (AE) signals. The envelope power spectrum (EPS) of each sub-band signal is then calculated to detect the characteristic defect frequencies to reveal abnormal symptoms in bearings. The selection of an appropriate sub-band is essential for effective fault diagnosis, as it can reveal intrinsically explicit information about different types of bearing faults. To address this issue, we propose a Gaussian distribution model-based health-related index (HI) that is a powerful quantitative parameter to accurately estimate the severity of bearing defects. The most optimal sub-band for fault detection is determined using two dimensional (2D) visualization analysis. The efficiency of the proposed approach is validated using several experiments in which different defect conditions are identified under variable, and low operational speeds.

It can reduce economical losses by eliminating unexpected downtime in industry due to failure of rotary machines. Though widely investigated in the past couple of decades, continued advancement is still desirable to improve upon existing fault diagnosis techniques. Vibration acceleration signals collected from machine bearings exhibit nonstationary behavior due to variable working conditions and multiple fault severities. In the current work, a two-layered bearing fault diagnosis scheme is proposed for the identification of fault pattern and crack size for a given fault type. A hybrid feature pool is used in combination with sparse stacked autoencoder (SAE)-based deep neural networks (DNNs) to perform effective diagnosis of bearing faults of multiple severities. The hybrid feature pool can extract more discriminating information from the raw vibration signals, to overcome the nonstationary behavior of the signals caused by multiple crack sizes. More discriminating information helps the subsequent classifier to effectively classify data into the respective classes. The results indicate that the proposed scheme provides satisfactory performance in diagnosing bearing defects of multiple severities. Moreover, the results also demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms, i.e., support vector machines (SVMs) and backpropagation neural networks (BPNNs).

    Description: Leakage detection is a fundamental problem in water management. Its importance is expressed not only in avoiding resource wastage, but also in protecting the environment and the safety of water resources. Therefore, early leak detection is increasingly urged. This paper used an intelligent leak detection method based on a model using statistical parameters extracted from acoustic emission (AE) signals. Since leak signals depend on many operation conditions, the training data in real-life situations usually has a small size. To solve the problem of a small sample size, a data improving method based on enhancing the generalization ability of the data was proposed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, this study used the datasets obtained from two artificial leak cases which were generated by pinholes with diameters of 0.3 mm and 0.2 mm. Experimental results show that the employment of the additional data improving block in the leak detection scheme enhances the quality of leak detection in both terms of accuracy and stability.

    Description: Efficient fault diagnosis of electrical and mechanical anomalies in induction motors (IMs) is challenging but necessary to ensure safety and economical operation in industries. Research has shown that bearing faults are the most frequently occurring faults in IMs. The vibration signals carry rich information about bearing health conditions and are commonly utilized for fault diagnosis in bearings. However, collecting these signals is expensive and sometimes impractical because it requires the use of external sensors. The external sensors demand enough space and are difficult to install in inaccessible sites. To overcome these disadvantages, motor current signal-based bearing fault diagnosis methods offer an attractive solution. As such, this paper proposes a hybrid motor-current data-driven approach that utilizes statistical features, genetic algorithm (GA) and machine learning models for bearing fault diagnosis. First, the statistical features are extracted from the motor current signals. Second, the GA is utilized to reduce the number of features and select the most important ones from the feature database. Finally, three different classification algorithms namely KNN, decision tree, and random forest, are trained and tested using these features in order to evaluate the bearing faults. This combination of techniques increases the accuracy and reduces the computational complexity. The experimental results show that the three classifiers achieve an accuracy of more than 97%. In addition, the evaluation parameters such as precision, F1-score, sensitivity, and specificity show better performance. Finally, to validate the efficiency of the proposed model, it is compared with some recently adopted techniques. The comparison results demonstrate that the suggested technique is promising for diagnosis of IM bearing faults.

    Description: The vibration signals of gearbox gear fault signatures are informative components that can be used for gearbox fault diagnosis and early fault detection. However, the vibration signals are normally non-linear and non-stationary, and they contain background noise caused by data acquisition systems and the interference of other machine elements. Especially in conditions with varying rotational speeds, the informative components are blended with complex, unwanted components inside the vibration signal. Thus, to use the informative components from a vibration signal for gearbox fault diagnosis, the noise needs to be properly distilled from the informational signal as much as possible before analysis. This paper proposes a novel gearbox fault diagnosis method based on an adaptive noise reducer–based Gaussian reference signal (ANR-GRS) technique that can significantly reduce noise and improve classification from a one-against-one, multiclass support vector machine (OAOMCSVM) for the fault types of a gearbox. The ANR-GRS processes the shaft rotation speed to access and remove noise components in the narrowbands between two consecutive sideband frequencies along the frequency spectrum of a vibration signal, enabling the removal of enormous noise components with minimal distortion to the informative signal. The optimal output signal from the ANR-GRS is then extracted into many signal feature vectors to generate a qualified classification dataset. Finally, the OAOMCSVM classifies the health states of an experimental gearbox using the dataset of extracted features. The signal processing and classification paths are generated using the experimental testbed. The results indicate that the proposed method is reliable for fault diagnosis in a varying rotational speed gearbox system.

    Description: Acoustic emission (AE) has been used extensively for structural health monitoring based on the stress waves generated due to evolution of cracks in concrete structures. A major concern while using AE features is that each of them responds differently to the fractures in concrete structures. To tackle this problem, Mahalanobis—Taguchi system (MTS) is utilized, which fuses the AE feature space to provide comprehensive and reliable degradation indicator with a feature selection method to determine useful features. Further, majority of the existing investigations gave little attention to naturally occurring cracks, which are actually more difficult to detect. In this study, a novel degradation indicator (DI) based on AE features and MTS is proposed to indicate the performance degradation in reinforced concrete beams. The experimental results confirm that the MTS can successfully distinguish between healthy and faulty conditions. To alleviate the noise from the DI obtained through MTS, a noise-removal strategy based on Chebyshev inequality is suggested. The results show that the proposed DI based on AE features and MTS is capable of detecting early stage cracks as well as development of damage in concrete beams.
