Notes: Abstract The reaction127I(n, γ)128I has been investigated at the tangential facility of the McMaster University Nuclear Reactor using a pair spectrometer. A total of 248 transitions were observed in the photon energy range 4.5–6.8 MeV. Below an excitation energy of 1 MeV more than 50 levels have been inferred. Through use of 28 levels with well established energies, a neutron separation energy of 6826.12±0.05 keV was determined. The level density up to an excitation of 2.5 MeV was examined on the basis of a statistical model and found to agree with current parameter values. TheE1 andM1 strength functions were determined and the influence of the giant dipole resonance on the former investigated.

Notes: Abstract The angular distributions of neutrons produced in the (γ, n) reaction are reported for the separated isotopes206Pb and208Pb. The experiment made use of highly chromatic photons generated by neutron capture on nickel and chromium in the core of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, and a high resolution3He detector. Photoneutron spectra were recorded at 7 angles between 20° and 160°. The results were used to infer the extent of photon multipole mixing between 7 and 11 MeV within the framework of the statistical collective model. The existence of M1 strength could not be confirmed but multipole mixing, most likely E2∶E1 was found at all energies. Estimates of the ratio of E2 to E1 strength is given for all photon energies investigated for both lead isotopes.

Notes: Abstract A method has been developed to aid in determining if a particular transition in an (n, γ) reaction originated from the compound, rather than from an intermediate, state. The method is based upon a simple model which is demonstrated to be tolerant to sizeable variations in the nuclear parameters employed. The reliability of the procedure is assessed by comparing the predictions of the model with results gained through detailed analysis by others. Finally the technique is applied to some recently acquired data in order to illustrate how much information can be extracted by its use.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray spectrum from thermal neutron capture in50V, enriched to 36% isotopic composition in a 2.6-mg target of V2O5, was observed by means of a highsensitivity pair-spectrometer. A level scheme is discussed, the nuclear temperature parameter deduced, and maximum-likelihood values for energy levels and neutron separation energy obtained.

Notes: Abstract Neutron separation energies for the (γ, n) reaction have been determined for isotopes of niobium, cadmium, indium, antimony, tantalum, gold, thallium, lead and bismuth. A source of discrete energy photons which exceed the reactionQ-values was obtained from neutron capture on nickel and chromium placed in the core of the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. The photons illuminated the target and the photoneutrons produced were detected using a high resolution3He spectrometer. TheQ-values obtained possess greater precision, in most cases, than in any previous measurements.

Notes: Abstract A sensitive, high resolution study of the103Rh(n, γ)104Rh reaction has revealed the presence of 516 transitions in the energy range 3,700 to 7,000 keV. These results have been used to interpret the reaction in terms of a statistical model in which a constant temperature level density is assumed. Previous work which revealed a much simpler level structure is quantitatively explained in terms of resolution and sensitivity. The average reduced radiative width is significantly lower than that reported for nuclides in theA=100 mass region and the width shows an indication of an energy dependence somewhat greater thanE γ 3 . The neutron separation energy of the reaction is found to be 6,999.0±0.1 keV.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray spectra associated with thermal neutron capture in targets of58Ni,60Ni,62Ni, and64Ni have been observed with a high-sensitivity pair-spectrometer. Level schemes for the four product nuclei are discussed, correlation of widths with neutron single-particle states examined, and estimates forM1 andE2γ-ray strength functions obtained.

Notes: Abstract Values or upper limits for the radiative widths of 12 primaryE2 transitions observed in thermal neutron capture for nuclei with 144≦A≦180 are presented. The results are compared with the predictions of the Axel-Brink hypothesis using the systematics of the isoscalar and isovector quadrupole resonances. The strengths are on the average lower than expected. Analysis of previously reported average resonance data results in the same conclusion.

Notes: Abstract The quadrupole interaction between the tantalum nucleus and its environment in potassium heptafluohafnate incorporating radioactive181Hf has been studied over the temperature range from 77 K to 318 K. A discontinuity in the field gradient tensor is observed at 250 K together with a more gradual alteration with midpoint temperature of approximately 210 K. Below 250 K, the data indicate two inequivalent sites for the tantalum nuclei. The values obtained for the electric field gradient tensor suggest that motional averaging may be significant in this compound.

Notes: Abstract A high precision study of the gamma ray spectrum following neutron capture by a target of natural sulfur is reported. The energy precision obtained has permitted construction of decay schemes for33S and35S. In the case of the former isotope a total of 22 levels have been identified while for the latter and much weaker reaction 7 states have been observed. While some transitions attributable to capture by33S are observed, their weakness prohibited detailed analysis. The neutron separation energies, based upon the14N(n, γ)15N standard are found to be 8,641.60 (3) keV and 6,985.84 (5) keV for33S and35S respectively.
