    Measuring attitudinal commitment in business-to-business channels (2004)

    Notes: While organizational behaviourists have largely adopted a three-component conceptualisation of attitudinal commitment, marketers continue exclusively to apply one- or two-component models. In this paper, the reliability and validity of one-, two- and three-component models of commitment are examined within a business-to-business context. The results indicate that the three-component model incorporating instrumental, affective and normative dimensions is superior on both substantive and empirical grounds. It is subsequently argued that marketing planners need to demand that marketing researchers are more precise when incorporating commitment into conceptual and empirical studies, and account for these distinct components either by explicitly including or omitting them. It is also argued that marketing managers can enhance channel relationships if they are cognisant of the three distinct types of attitudinal commitments when formulating channel management tactics and strategies.

    The role of strategic planning in the performance of small, professional service firms: A research note (2004)

    Notes: Using a sample of small, regional professional service firms, this paper investigates relationships between firm performance and aspects of strategic planning. Constructs measuring vision, mission, latent abilities, competitor orientation and market orientation are identified using exploratory factor analysis and respondents categorised as non-planners, informal planners, formal planners and sophisticated planners. Multiple performance measures were used to assess the relationship between these factors and categories and firm performance. While no significant relationship between the performance measures and factors is identified, a significant relationship between net profit and informal planning emerges. These mixed results bring into question the value of the classical strategic planning process as a means of achieving a sustainable competitive advantage in the market analysed.

    Notes: A silicon diimide gel Si(NH)x(NH2)y(NMe2)z was prepared by an acid-catalyzed ammonolysis of tris(dimethylamino)silylamine. Pyrolysis of the gel at 1000°C under NH3 flow led to the formation of an amorphous silicon nitride material without carbon contamination. All of the gel and pyrolyzed products exhibited a mesoporous structure with a high surface area and narrow pore-size distribution. The effective surface area of the pyrolyzed silicon nitride residues decreases with increasing temperature, but the heating rate during pyrolysis has little influence on the surface area and pore-size distribution of the final mesoporous ceramic Si3N4 products because of the highly cross-linked structures of the precursor silicon diimide gel.

    Notes: During germination of spores of Bacillus species, a novel protease termed GPR initiates the degradation of a group of small acid-soluble spore proteins which protect the dormant spore's DNA from damage. Trypsin digestion of the zymogen of B. megaterium GPR removes ∼15 kDa from the C-terminal end of the 46 kDa zymogen subunit, leaving a 30 kDa subunit. Single crystals of this truncated form of GPR have been obtained by the vapor-diffusion method using PEG 4000 as a precipitating agent. The crystals belong to the monoclinic space group P21, with unit-cell parameters a = 67.99, b = 105.34, c = 108.63 Å, β = 95.68°. The cryofrozen crystals diffract X-rays to about 3.3 Å using synchrotron radiation.

    Notes: Pneumolysin is a virulence factor from Streptococcus pneumoniae, a Gram-positive bacterial pathogen which causes human infections with a severe impact on mortality and morbidity worldwide. The enzyme belongs to a group of cholesterol-dependent cytolysins and interacts with its cholesterol receptor on target cells, leading to pneumolysin insertion into target-cell membranes and subsequently to pore formation and cell lysis. Pneumolysin has been overexpressed, purified and crystallized for X-ray diffraction studies. Crystals have been obtained in the presence of cholesterol in an effort to produce a three-dimensional structure of pneumolysin in its fully functional form with the enzyme bound to its activator. This is the first report of the crystallization of a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin in the presence of bound cholesterol. The vapor-diffusion method using ammonium sulfate as a precipitation agent was used to grow crystals in the presence of n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside and phosphatidylcholine. Crystals of this 53 kDa molecule complexed with cholesterol diffracted X-rays to 3.3 Å. The crystal unit cell has parameters a = b = 191.45, c = 66.16 Å, α = β = 90.0, γ = 120° and belongs to the trigonal space group P3. The determination of the three-dimensional structure of this pneumococcal cytolysin is in progress.

    Notes: The synthesis and the liquid-crystal temperatures of sixty 4-cyano-2-fluorophenyl and 4-cyano-3-fluorophylen 4-substituted benzoates are described. The nematic-isotropic liquid transition temperatures of the most of these novel esters are only marginally lower than those of the corresponding esters containing an H-atom in place of the F-substituent. In several instances, the clearing points of the F-substiuted-phenyl esters are higher than those of the non-substituted-phenyl esters. The nematic ranges of several of the new esters are markedly broader than those of the analogous non-F-substituted-phenyl esters.

    Notes: The synthesis and liquid-crystal transition temperatures of forty ester derivatives of 2-fluoro-4-hydroxybenzonitrile and 3-fluoro-4-hydroxybenzonitrile are reported. The esters contain the trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane or the 1,4-disubstituted bicyclo[2.2.2]octane rings (some contain an additional phenyl ring). Many of the novel F-substituted esters exhibit substantially higher nematic-isotropic transition temperatures than the corresponding unsubstituted esters. The order of clearing points of these laterally substiuted esters differing only in the presence of a benzene ring and the above-mentioned rings id established.
