Abstract In order to explain experimental results obtained by his co-workers, Zeldovich developed a physical model for the response of shocked dielectrics. This model was useful in explaining these earlier results. Similar work was also carried out in the US, which represented an extension and broadening of the concepts developed independently by Zeldovich. This previously unpublished work will be presented here. These results were successfully applied to interpret electrical conductivity measurements in shocked dielectric and ionic fluids.
