    Description: A catalog describing the characteristics of all the interplanetary type III storms observed at kilometric wavelengths by the radio astronomy experiment on the ISEE-3 spacecraft between September 1978 and October 1982 is presented. Three-dimensional trajectories have been determined for about one-third of these storms using radio techniques. Solar coordinate and solar wind parameters derived from the trajectories are also tabulated. A statistical summary of the data is included.

    Description: Present hydrodynamic models of solar wind streams predict that interactions will cause interplanetary shocks to decay and large-scale structures to coalesce and smooth out, with a decay length of 10-15 AU for moderate or small-amplitude shocks. The Pioneer 10 plasma data, extending 1-30 AU, are examined in the light of such predictions. It is found that coalescence of streams into a single stream per solar rotation does occur, in general, but that considerable structure remains by 30 AU. The leading edge of a stream often exhibits a velocity jump of greater than 20 km/s; many of these may be shocks. There is a characteristic velocity-density-temperature signature of these distant streams which differs from the close-in double-shock signature. A unique transient was seen in July 1982, at 28 AU, with a velocity jump of about 235 km/s.

    Description: Selected plasma parameters observed by Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 between launch (1972 and 1973) and the end of 1979 are used to find the large-scale radial structure of the solar wind. Comparison of data from the two spacecraft is used to separate temporal from spatial variations. The average bulk speed is found to remain constant at about 430 km/s, with stream structure still evident, though of diminished amplitude, at 20.5 AU (Pioneer 10's distance by the end of 1979). Proton density, flux, pressure, and kinetic energy flux are found to have radial profiles consistent with 1/R-squared. Proton temperatures decrease as R to the -0.6 power, too slowly for an adiabatic expansion.

    Description: The quiet north polar cleft at 1400 km was studied by Isis-2 instruments, and data from the retarding potential analyzer and the cylindrical electrostatic probe show that thermal plasma density fluctuations are distributed in a region between 75 deg and 82 deg invariant latitude and approximately dawn to dusk. Cleft shape and shape variations are described. Thermal ions and thermal electrons usually fluctuated together, but suprathermal electrons fluctuated independently. Data on thermal plasma patterns correlates fairly well with observations of soft particles and auroral optical emissions and not as well with measurements of high-energy particles. The data suggest that the energy source for the thermal irregularities is associated with soft particles and that precipitating high-energy particles do not drive the thermal plasma at these altitudes.

    Description: The paper extends the search for return current carriers to the thermal energy range for electrons, using simultaneous observations on Isis 2 by a magnetometer, retarding potential analyzer, and soft particle spectrometer. Each instrument is described along with data available. Simple magnetic models are used to illustrate how magnetic perturbations may be interpreted as currents remote from the satellite or local to it and that the choice of model cannot be uniquely established by magnetometer measurements alone.
