Notes: Using the reactive ionized cluster beam method, ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 is deposited at a low temperature. This method utilizes ionized and accelerated Bi and Ti clusters. Under optimum conditions, c-axis oriented films can be formed on quartz and on Si(100) substrates at 200 and 250 °C, respectively. The crystal orientation can be controlled without changing the substrate material and temperature. Furthermore, it is found that the ionization and acceleration conditions of the Bi and Ti elements are responsible, respectively, for the BIT formation and its orientation. The dielectric constant of the films is 135 at 100 kHz and the spontaneous polarization is 4.2 μC/cm2. These ferroelectric properties are almost identical to the bulk material.

Notes: Abstract The synergistic effects of adsorbed species (polyoxyethylenealkylamine (POAA), diphenylamine-crotonaldehyde reaction product (RP) and benzalacetone (BA)) on the surface morphology and crystal orientation of electrodeposited tin from acid stannous sulfate solutions have been studied by means of various electrochemical methods, scanning electron microscopic observation and measurements of X-ray diffraction patterns. Needle-like or columnar electrodeposits of tin were obtained from acid stannous sulfate solution in the absence of adsorbed species. On the other hand, fine-grained, smooth and compact electrodeposits of tin, which had a preferred orientation with the (200) plane parallel to the surface, were obtained from acid stannous sulfate solutions containing POAA, RP and BA due to the synergistic effect of the three kinds of adsorbed species. It was found that POAA acts to produce a uniform tin deposition over the whole surface, RP acts as a grain refiner and BA has a leveling action.

Notes: A new preparation technique of the polymer plate with high water wettability and sufficient mar resistance was proposed. The gel plate resulting from the prepolymerization of diallyl compound (M1), diallyl phthalate (DAP), in a casting cell was immersed in an aqueous solution of unsaturated carboxylic acid (M2), acrylic acid (AA), and methacrylic acid (MAA), at a specific temperature for a specific time. M2 was copolymerized with the remaining M1 in the region near the surface of the gel plate, and polymer plates with the following characteristics were obtained: for DAP-AA system, θi (contact angle of the alkali-treated plate) = 10.5° and mar resistance (for the alkali-treated plate at a dry state) = 70 g; for DAP-MAA system, θi = 8.3°, and mar resistance = 65 g.

Notes: Synthetic-polymer plates with carboxyl group on their surface were prepared by a two-step copolymerization process transferring M2 monomer via vapor phase. Diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) (CR-39) was used as M1 monomer, and acrylic acid was acid was used as M2 monomer. The relations between the experimental conditions and the surface properties of the resulting plates were examined in the following terms: (1) composition of CR-39 prepolymer gel plate used and (2) concentration of benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The plates had good water wettability and an excellent antifogging property.

Notes: Synthetic polymer plates (GPs) with high surface energy were prepared by the two-step copolymerization process previously reported, using diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) (CR-39) as M1 monomer and unsaturated sulfonates [sodium vinyl sulfonate (VS-Na+), potassium styrene sulfonate (StS-K+), and sodium 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate (SEM-Na+)] as M2 monomer. The contact angle (θH) of water for the acid-treated (immersed in an aqueous 0.1 N HCl solution for 2 h) GPs decreased in the order StS-K+, VS-Na+, and SEM-Na+. In the case of M2 = SEM-Na+, the θH value was about 20°. By adding NaCl in the immersion solution and changing the pH of the immersion solution, the θH values for the CR-39-SEM-Na+ GPs were lowered to 18.9 and 13.1°, respectively. The θH values for the above GPs were smaller than those for the CR-39-acrylic acid or the CR-39-methacrylic acid GPs in the previous report, whereas the contact angle (θNa) of water for the former after alkali treatment (immersed in an aqueous 0.1 N NaOH solution for 2h) was larger than those for the latter. The former had durability of water wettability superior to the latter because of the difference in dissociation characteristic of the respective functional group.

Notes: The critical surface tension (γc) of synthetic-polymer plates with a functional group (amide, sulfonic, or carboxyl group) on their surface was determined by the Zisman plot using series of pure liquids (thiodiglycol, formamide, and water) and the aqueous solutions of the salts (NaCl, NaNO3, etc.) as a hydrogen-bonding liquid. The Zisman plots gave a straight line, and the trends in the γc values coincide with those in the hydrophilicity anticipated from the θ values. The use of the aqueous salt solution coupled with the pure liquids as a hydrogen-bonding liquid offers a practical determination procedure of the γc value for the materials with high surface energy.

Notes: Polymer plates with high surface energy were prepared by the procedure described in the previous paper, using diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) as a substrate polymer and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid as a hydrophilic monomer. By the alkali treatment (immersing in an aqueous 0.1N NaOH solution for 2 h), the resulting polymer plates had good water wettability (contact angle for water = 10°) and sufficient mar resistance (the scratching hardness = 45-50 g) in a dry state, and their clarities were higher than those for DAP systems previously reported. The surface densities of carboxyl groups on the polymer plate estimated by use of the McBain's equation were 0.18-0.46 molecule/Å2.

Notes: The effects of bioactive glass and vitamin D3 on cultured fibroblasts derived from periodontal-ligament, with respect to their proliferation and alkaline-phosphatase activity were studied. The cells were cultured with or without the bioactive glass and/or vitamin D3, then the number and alkaline-sphosphatase activity of the cells were measured periodically until the 33rd day. Formation of mineralized deposits was assessed by staining with alizarin red and von Kossa staining techniques. Fewer fibroblasts grew when they were cultured in the presence of bioactive glass and/or vitamin D3 as compared to those cultures without them. Alkaline-phosphatase activity was greater in the fibroblasts cultured with bioactive glass and vitamin D3 than in the cells grown without them. Mineralized deposits assessed by alizarin red and von Kossa staining techniques were observed microscopically around the fibroblasts cultured with bioactive glass and/or vitamin D3. A nodule visible after drying was evident only when both bioactive glass and vitamin D3 were present in culture. The results showed that although the bioactive glass and vitamin D3 decreased cell proliferation, they increased the alkaline-phosphatase activity of the fibroblasts which formed a nodule, suggesting an effect which might be useful for implant materials. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The resonance Raman spectra of S-methyldithizone (MeHDz), S-ethyldithizone (EtHDz) and S-isopropyldithizone (iPrHDz) have been measured in the solid state and in solution. It is shown that the red and yellow isomers of these S-alkyldithizones adopt in solution the trans-syn-s-trans and trans-anti-s-trans configurations, respectively, with respect to the N=N, C=N and C—N bonds of the formazan skeleton. It is also demonstrated that for EtHDz the red and yellow isomers can be isolated as different crystal forms. Vibrational assignments are given for both red and yellow isomers of MeHDz based on the frequency shifts of five kinds of isotopically substituted species.

Notes: Resonance Raman spectra of photo-activated transient blue species of 2-(2′,4′-dinitrobenzyl)pyridine and 4-(2′,4′-dinitrobenzyl)pyridine have been measured in methanol solutions using a dual beam pump/probe laser technique and a continuous flow method. Comparison of the Raman spectra with those of N-methyl derivatives of both compounds and with those of 1-methyl-2-pyridonemethide and dehydrogenated 5-nitro-o-toluic acid indicates that the transient blue species of both compounds take an N—H quinoid form and not an aci-nitro form. The photo-activated blue species of 4-(2′,4′-dinitrobenzyl)pyridine in the molten state is found to be identical with the transient species of the same compound in solution.
