Notes: Nucleation of dislocations within a strained multilayer and at a singular or vicinal multilayer surface is considered for typical compound semiconductor and metal cases. The results indicate that strained multilayer structures are stable against dislocation injection, even when the layer thickness exceeds the thermodynamic critical thickness for misfit dislocation stability, in the absence of defects or large external stresses. An exact energy calculation for spreading of a threading dislocation in GaAs layer is also presented. The results show that in the absence of any jog formation, there is no barrier to spreading at or above the thermodynamic, Matthews–Blakeslee critical layer thickness. Moreover, reversible spreading to an equilibrium standoff distance occurs for thicknesses smaller than the critical thermodynamic value, an effect that can lead to dissipative reversed dislocation motion under alternating driving forces.

Notes: Abstract— The static and dynamic fracture toughness of an Al-Li 8090 alloy plate was evaluated as a function of notch orientation. Static fracture toughness is marginally lower than the dynamic fracture toughness in all the three notch orientations that were studied. The fracture mechanism remains unchanged and the degree of in-plane anisotropy is significant, but more or less similar under static and dynamic conditions.

Notes: Abstract Particulate-reinforced metal-matrix composites are being developed to satisfy the need for high stiffness, high strength materials by combining the beneficial properties of both metals and ceramics. The use of such composites as structural members necessitates an understanding of their damage tolerance. A model relating the crack growth resistance to initiation toughness and tensile properties is developed in this paper. The crack growth toughness has also been related to fundamental microstructural properties of these composites. A critical ratio of Young's modulus to flow stress to enable stable crack growth has been established. Suitable suggestions for tailoring the microstructure to optimize crack growth toughness have been discussed.

Notes: Abstract The fatigue behaviour of 2124Al/20 vol % SiCp composite was studied in the as vacuum hotpressed condition, as well as after a homogenization treatment subsequent to vacuum hot pressing. It was found that there was a significant improvement in the tensile strengths, fatigue threshold stress intensity range, ΔK th, and cyclic fracture toughness, K fc, as a result of the homogenization treatment. The improvement in the properties of the composite after homogenization is attributed to the dissolution of the coarse intermetallic precipitates present in the composite in the as-vacuum hot-pressed condition.

Notes: Abstract The room temperature mechanical properties of Al2O3 composites reinforced with 25 vol% of either MoSi2 or Nb particulates were investigated. It was found that addition of Nb particles resulted in a reduction in the elastic modulus, but caused a significant increase in both flexural strength and fracture toughness. On the other hand, the addition of MoSi2 particles resulted in only a marginal decrease in elastic modulus and marginal increase in both flexural strength and fracture toughness. The elastic modulus results were explained on the basis of Tsai - Halpin model. For both the composites, the increase in flexural strength was attributed to the grain refinement of the Al2O3 matrix as well as the load transfer to the reinforcement particles. The marginal increase in fracture toughness in Al2O3 / MoSi2 composites was attributed to crack deflection, whereas the threefold increase in fracture toughness in Al2O3 / Nb composites was attributed to crack blunting and bridging.

Notes: Abstract Two aluminium alloys with nominal compositions of Al-8Fe-4Ce and Al-8Fe-1V-2Si (all compositions in wt %) were rapidly solidified by ultrasonic gas atomization. The atomized powders with an average particle size (d50) of 30 μm were vacuum hot pressed and subsequently hot extruded. The P/M extrusion exhibited similar microstructure and elevated temperature tensile properties. The tensile and stress rupture samples of both the alloys exhibited ductile dimple failure. However, the Al-Fe-V-Si extrusion samples exhibited significantly better creep and stress rupture properties. The Al-Fe-Ce alloy was found to be more susceptible to cavitation at elevated temperatures which resulted in poor stress rupture properties.

Notes: Abstract The methodology to predict the increase in crack growth resistance due to crack deflection and branching is described. These procedures are discussed with respect to an Al-Li alloy 2090 sheet in T6 condition, the R-curve tests on which revealed that the crack path in L-T orientation was deflected and branched while it remained nominally straight in T-L orientation. The resistance to slow stable crack extension in L-T orientation was found to be significantly higher as compared to that in T-L orientation. Such behaviour is rationalized in terms of crack deflection and branching. The observed variation in the crack path morphology and the resulting R-curves in L-T and T-L orientations can be understood in terms of the microstructural features of the alloy.
