Notes: Abstract The paper deals with a selection of the climatological baseline, GCM validity and construction of the climate change scenarios for an impact assessment in the Czech territory. The period of 1961–1990 has been selected as the climatological baseline. The corresponding database includes more than 50 monthly mean temperature and precipitation series, and 16 time series of daily meteorological data that contain also the solar radiation data. The 1× CO2 outputs produced by four GCMs, provided by the CSMT (GISS, GFD30, GFD01, and CCCM), were compared with observed temperature and precipitation conditions in western and central Europe with a particular attention devoted to the Czech territory. The GCM ability to simulate annual cycles of temperature, precipitation and radiation was thoroughly examined. The GISS and CCCM were selected as a basis for constructing climate change scenarios as they simulated reasonably the observed patterns. According to the GISS variant, 2× CO2 climate assumes a higher winter and lower summer warming, and an increase in annual precipitation amounts. A dangerous combination of the summer temperature increase and declining precipitation amounts is a specific feature of the CCCM scenario. An incremental scenario for temperature and precipitation is based on the combination of prescribed changes in both annual means and annual courses.

Notes: Summary The existence of periods of 24 and 92 hours has been proved on the basis of the analysis of time series of hourly mean wind direction data measured at the meteorological station in Praha-Ruzyně in the period from January to June, 1978. Besides, the closest mutual interdiurnal dependence of wind direction data observed at the climatological observation hour, at 7 a.m., has been proved. A method applicable to analysing time series of wind direction data by means of a computer is described.

Notes: Summary The statistical treatment of the dependence of monthly sums of global radiation on the monthly sums of sunshine at the stations of Hradec Králové, Bratislava — Koliba and Hurbanovo is presented. The parameters of linear and quadratic regression are derived for the said stations and for the individual months of the year. Drawing on the statistical analysis of the initial data sets, the accuracy and reliability of the mentioned regression relations are critically evaluated.

Notes: Abstract Three-dimensional global circulation models (GCMs) are ‘state-of-the-art’ tools for projecting possible changes in climate. GCM simulations have frequently been validated against observations in terms of time-averaged variables while daily time series have not been studied extensively. In this paper, 30-year simulations of daily extreme temperatures are compared with the 30-year series recorded in Moravia. Attention is focused on the annual cycles, trimmed characteristics and average interdiurnal variability which are calculated for the average simulated series (4 gridpoints) and the average time series recorded in Moravia (5 stations). It is shown that daily extreme temperature variability is underestimated in the simulations, maximum (minimum) temperatures being underestimated (overestimated). Generally, the persistence of the simulated series is much higher, and small day-to-day changes are observed more frequenly than those in reality. The model is unable to reflect large changes between two consecutive days.

Notes: Summary The winter seasons of 1950|51–1975|76 at the observatories of Milešovka and Prague-Klementinum were analysed from the point of view of the existence of a temperature trend. The investigated period is characterized by a non-uniform distribution of warm and cold events and a high interannual variability. Regression lines fitted to the interval 1950|51–1962|63 display a negative slope, however, randomness tests do not prove the existence of a temperature trend. The interval 1962|63–1975|76 was a period of temperature increase. The sets of winter temperatures are characterized by a high level of climatic noise.

Notes: Summary In the present paper we follow up [1] and we give the results of calculations of the coefficients in the linear and quadratic regression relations between the monthly sums of sunshine and global radiation for the mountain station of Štrbské Pleso. As in [1] the quality of these relations is analysed with the aid of confidence intervals and tolerance limits. We also compare the initial sets of statistical data from Štrbské Pleso with analogous sets at the lowland stations of Hradec Králové, Bratislava and Hurbanovo. The paper also includes a description and results of the statistical tests which enable us to obtain information about the existence of mutual agreement of regression relations between the monthly sums of sunshine and global radiation for various stations.

Notes: Summary The results of an objective weather categorization are presented. The 9 meteorological variables recorded daily during winter seasons of 1961–66 at Prague-Clementinum represent the input dataset. The principal component analysis and a few clustering procedures have been evaluated. 5 component solution and the average linkage clustering method were found optimal. The winter days have been grouped, according to their meteorological character, into 14 clusters. The warm categories represent 20% of the time and the cold categories less than 15% of the days. The mean maps of 1000 hPa and 500 hPa are shown for a few selected categories. Clustering techniques applied to long-time instrumental series can provide a better basis for attempting to detect temperature changes which have taken place over a long time span.

Notes: Abstract Heat waves (periods of extremely hot summer weather) in the region of south Moravia are in the focus of this study. The introduced definition consists of three requirements imposed on the period that is considered a heat wave: at least three days with T MAX ≥30.0°C must be observed; the mean T MAX over the whole period is at least 30.0°C; and T MAX must not drop below 25.0°C. To compare the severity of the individual heat waves, various characteristics (duration, number of tropical days, peak temperature, cumulative temperature excess, precipitation amount) are examined. The heat wave index HWI is defined to express the severity of heat waves in the most comprehensive way. An extraordinary heat wave occurred in July and August 1994; it lasted more than a month at several stations, while the duration of a typical heat wave is only 4 - 7 days. The extremely long unbroken period of tropical days, and even of days with T MAX ≥32.0°C, represents the most distinct feature of the severe 1994 heat wave. With regard to heat wave characteristics, the summer temperature exceptionality of the early 1990s is indubitable.
