    Notes: Abstract Uredinial and telial states of aMelampsora species occurring on the leaves ofSalix serissaefolia were for the first time recorded. Field observations and inoculation experiments showed that the spermogonial and aecial states of the fungus were formed onChelidonium majus var.asiaticum andCorydalis incisa. The fungus was identified asMelampsora yezoensis based on the morphological observation of all the spore states. Urediniospores were able to infectS. erocarpa andS. pierotii as well asS. serissaefolia andS. jessoensis. Salix serissaefolia, S. eriocarpa, andS. pierotii are new uredinial and telial hosts ofM. yezoensis, andC. majus var.asiaticum andC. incisa are new spermogonial and aecial hosts of the fungus.

    Notes: Abstract Molecular phylogenetic analyses of fern rusts were carried out based on 18S rDNA sequences. We sequenced the 18S rDNAs of fern rusts (Hyalopsora polypodii andUredinopsis intermedia) and non-fern rusts (Aecidium epimedii, Coleosporium asterum, Ochropsora kraunhiae, Puccinia suzutake andPhysopella ampelopsidis) and analyzed their phylogenetic relationships with other members of the Urediniomycetes. Our bootstrapped neighbor-joining tree obtained from these analyses showed that rust fungi were apparently monophyletic at high confidence level (100% bootstrap confidence). In this molecular phylogenetic tree, the two fern rusts did not occupy the basal position within the rust fungal lineage and did not form a monophyletic lineage. Two species of the Cronartiaceae (Peridermium harknessii, Cronartium ribicola) and one species of the Coleosporiaceae (Coleosporium asterum) grouped with the fern rusts. Therefore, our results suggested that the two fern rusts were not primitive. On the other hand,Mixia osmundae, which is parasitic on the primitive fernOsmunda, was phylogenetically far from the fern rusts.

    Notes: Abstract The surface structures of peridial cell walls (outer, side, and inner walls) of 40Gymnosporangium and 7Roestelia species were examined by scanning electron microscopy. These surface structures were classified into 10 types based on shape, size, and density of the processes. Surface structural types of each wall were stable within a species. Therefore, it is suggested that surface structure types of peridial cell walls could be used as important diagnostic characteristics ofGymnosporangium andRoestelia species.

    Notes: Abstract The larch brown rust caused byTriphragmiopsis laricinum was found onLarix cajandri in Primorsky Territory, Russia. This was a new host and locality record for the pathogen. Preliminary survey of the disease incidence in several localities in East and Northeast Russia and Yakutia-Sakha Republic indicated the restricted distribution of the rust in a few localities in Primorsky Territory. As previously reported in China,T. laricinum was proved to form uredinia in nature and to be able to propagate vegetatively by urediniospores. This suggests the fungus could become a devastating pathogen threatening a large-scale larch plantation in Far East of Russia. Field observations and the failure of basidiospore inoculation onto larch needles suggest the heteroecious life cycle ofT. laricinum.

    Notes: Abstract To develop a reliable method for identifyingMelampsora species parasitic on willows in Japan, we differentiated 10Melampsora species by PCR-RFLP analysis. Internal transcribed, spacer (ITS) regions, including 5.8S ribosomal DNA, of 63 collections of 10Melampsora species and 4 collections of unidentified species were amplified by PCR. The fragments from the 67 collections varied in size (approximately 880 bp, 860 bp and 840 bp). The restriction sites in the amplified DNA fragments were mapped after the RFLP analysis using four restriction enzymes,Dra I,EcoRI,SspI andTaqI. All the collections were divided into 11 RFLP types. In the 6 species,M. caprearum, M. epiphylla, M. kamikotica, M. larici-urbaniana, M. microsora andM. yezoensis, the RFLP type was species-specific. The RFLP type ofM. chelidonii-pierotii andM. coleosporioides was identical. The collections ofM. epitea were separated into three RFLP types. One of these three types was identical with the type ofM. humilis. It is suggested that the PCR-RFLP analysis of ITS regions is a useful and reliable method for species identification ofMelampsora.
