Abstract We discuss an analytic method for the design of three-dimensional magnetic multipoles from permanent magnet materials. The concept is explicited with an idealized, continuously varying magnetization. The effect of segmentation for realistic implementations is discussed. As an example we present an open, experimentally accessible cylindric structure for a dipole and a quadrupole field with high purity. The fields are useful over several cm3.
